Indications are that the Burlington
intends to resume work on the line sur
veyed nearly ten years ago northward
from Akron into the Black Hills At
that time there was a charter granting
the Colorado and Montana road a right
of way and the Burlington has recently
been acquiring land along the survey
under that charter First in construc
tion will bo a line north from Akron
tapping the Holdrege Sterling branch
at Holyoke and extending to either Hur
on S D or ONeill Neb where con
nections with the Great Northern will
establish a direct line between Denver
and St Paul It is stated that other
surveys have been made between Akron
and Pueblo tapping the Trinidad coal
fields Work on this branch will prob
ably be started as soon as the northern
line has been completed Lincoln Star
Railroads and Dividends
Although exact figures cannot be had
before the close of the year it is known
that the gross revenues of the railroads
have increased materially during 1903
and will probably average 89000 per
mile If therefore earnings should fall
off as badly as in 1892 they would be re
duced to about S7S30 per mile which is
about the figure of 1900 For tho latter
year the average dividend rate was 242
per cent as against 293 for 1902 The
surplus for the year however shows that
net earnings could have decreased 20
per cent before it would have been dis
sipated It must also be remembered
that railroads are now in better position
than ever in their history to operate
economically and withstand a long siege
of business depression The conclusion
would therefore seem to be warranted
that the power of the railroads to pay
present dividends is not likely to be
affected by adverse business conditions

TliBt Had Never Occurred to nim
When Lafayette visited Loudoun
county he was entertained with tho
other eminent guests by President
Monroe at Oak Hill Leesburg too
the historic town nine miles from Mon
roes country seat accorded him hon
ors on that occasion and at n dinner
at that town John Quincy Adams de
livered a famous toast to the surviving
patriots of the llevolution who lie
said were like the sibylline leaves
the fewer they became the mere pre
cious they were
On the return to Oak Uill another of
Monroes guests said to Mr Adams
Excuse the impertinence but would
you not tell me what inspired the beau
tiful sentiment of your toast today
Why replied Mr Adams it was
suggested tiiis morning by tho picture
of the sjbj 1 that hangs in the hall of
the Oak IIU mansion
now strange remarked the less
brilliant guest I have looked at that
picture many times during the past
years and that thought never occurred

CIievtiiiKT Dry Rice
A strange way of testing the inno
cence of an accused person is employed
in India said a Philadelphia mer
chant avIio lately returned from Mad
ras They haul the man up and give
him a mouthful of dry rice to chew I
dont suppose you ever chewed dry
rice Well it is hard Avork It takes a
deal of clicAving to get it masticated
into a glutinous mass like gum and
that is the condition that the accused is
required to get it into Avithin ten min
utes If you are calm and not afraid
you succeed but if you are nervous and
scared you fail for it seems that fear
has a strong effect upon the salivary
glnnd It prevents them from secret
ing saliva The mouth of a badly fright
ened person is always dry as a bono
It requires a tremendous flow of saliva
to cIioav dry rice and therefore tho
scared prisoner inevitably fails in this
test -It isnt of course a test employed
In the courts of the big towns It be
longs to the interior less enlightened
villages
ItcptilcH That Wnllc Erect
Lizards of several sorts can walk
and run easily on their hind legs The
Australian Avater lizard Avhich is thiee
or four feet in length keeps quite erect
when traversing long distances on
land It is found in the neighborhood
of river banks and passes much of its
time in shalloAV AAater
The frilled lizard of Queensland also
travels on its hind legs on level ground
keeping the frill folded Avhen running
When attacked it expands this fold of
skin which stands out like a ruff at
right angles round the neck giving it
a most formidable aspect so that dogs
that attack and kill larger lizards will
often retreat before a frilled lizard at
bay
There is also a tree lizard in Austra
lia that moves in a similar way All
these species AAalk on all fours when
merely moving about or going short
distances
Children So Lie
Do children lie Yes constantly
persistently and unh ersally says the
Kindergarten Magazine A child does
not tell the truth because he could not
He does not knoAV the truth and his
approximation to the truth is very
much Aaguer than ours And there are
certain qualities of his mind which
make it inevitable that he should per
vert the truth In the first place truth
is synonymous Avith knoAvledge He
does not knoAAr what truth is In the
second place and it is the same with
us children gradually approximate
the truth They have their ideas of
truth In the third place the childs
imagination drives him often to tell
what is not true
Brain AVork nnd Hair
Everything physical being equal it
is established that the man who is en
gaged in professional work will grow
gray sooner than will the man who
earns his bread by the literal sweat of
his brow Thus by implication the man
who has more and harder brain work
than another more worries more
troubles more difficult thoughts less
vitality in proportion this is the indi
vidual and the profession that soonest
are marked by gray hairs
On account of the heaAy business an
additional crew has been placed on the
Oxford and St Francis branch with
Conductor Herman Hegenberger in
charge and H F Riese and W V Olson
