one of the states chief witnesses in the
Dewey murder case was iired at by
masked men and one of the bullets pass

John Schmidt has been down at
Woodruff Kansas for a few days of
this week setting up the overhauled en
gine at the rock crushing plant of the
company at thar place He returned
home Wednesday
Three engines are now on track in
rear of the machine shop for shipment
to Havelock to be sold or scraped
They are of the smallest type now on
the Burlington system and are consider
ed too small for profitable service The

Fireman Will Weintz came in on No
2 Sunday morning from the west suf
fering severely with inflammation of the
bowels with which he was taken down
near Wray while on his run He has
been a great sufferer this week but is
some better at this writing
The company is excavating a large
cistern in the rear of the round house
in which to store the hot water from the
engines as they come into the round
house from the road to be cleaned It
will be about 20 feet deep and 30 feet in
diameter A pump will be added to the
plant and the water can thus be utilized
over again and again in washing out the
boilers of the engines
Foreman J M Hughes of the blacksmith-shop
has built himself a case-
hardening furnace just east of the shop
Crude petroleum oil will be used as fuel
and excellent results are expected from
the completed improvement He has
also arranged so that he can in future
weld a broken or bent engine frame by
the use of oil without taking the engine
apart which will be a great convenience

Tuesday morning between 11 and 12
oclock the department was called to the
Douglass residence occupied by James
Egan on South Madison street by a
small fire in the kitchen The fire was
soon put out The damage was small
