are the guests of Elmer Thompson and

Harrison who came in on No 5 from
Illinois
The Misses Jennie and Lucy Trant of
Cambridge visited a few days with their
friend Cassie Harrison returning home

The Ladies Aid Society of the Con
gregational church held an exchange
duringthe day and evening baturday
Ice cream and cake were served
Mr Powers residing a few miles north
of town died of consumption after a
lingering illness and was buried Satur
day morning from the Catholic church
He leaves a wife and several children to
mourn his death
Professor I S Walker left for Okla
homa Wednesday evening after a few
weeks visit with Mrs Walkers parents
Mr and Mrs W H Smith Mrs Walker
will continue her visit a few weeks longer
when she will join her husband in their
Oklahoma home

Harvestvis progressing nicely much
better than was anticipated it being so
heavy and fallen has made it very diffi
cult but the farmers increased their
energy and will succeed in saving nearly
all of the greatest harvest they ever had
Busy busy are they all the time The
first crop of alfalfa is not quite all taken
charge of yet and the second crop in
many places is ready to bo mown This
with threshing which will Begin this
week will leave no time fdr rest for
several weeks
Stabbing affray in Bartley Monday
morning about seven oclock Clarence
Simpson who had been drinking the pre
vious nightaS3aultedSamBryan without
cause or provocation and with a pocket
knife cut four ugly looking gashes in
side and abdomen Bryan was taken to
Dr Brown who dressed the wounds
County Attorney Eldred and Sheriff
Crabtree were called by phone and came
down on 12 Simpson had gone to the
country Mr Eldred filed the proper
papers with Squire Baker who issued a
warrant for the arrest of Simpson and
placed it in the hands of Sheriff Crab
tree who with Marshal Ritchie went
out to O S Van Dorens farm five miles
from Bartley where they arrested Simp
son and brought him back to Bartley
He was brought before Sqnire Baker
for preliminary examination when he
asked a continuance until Tuesday
July 28 which was granted and he was
committed to jail at Indianola until that
time This is another crime placed to
the credit of whiskey drinking
