The action of the Kansas supreme
court in releasing the Deweys on bail
will certainly not have the result of in
creasing respect for lawful proceedings
in that state but will rather strengthen
the growing belief in the impossibility
of convicting the wealthy and influential
of even the crime of murder On this
theory The Tribune does not expect the
conviction of Dewey and his two cow
boys of even manslaughter
Just contemplate Hayes county

PUBLIC FREE LIBRARY NOTES
The sole purpose of books is to qualify
us to learn from the great instructress
from natures self to dilute the rich
essence that flows from the universal
source to render knowledge innocuous
to immatuie digestions As the repro
duction is imperfect lacking in some
element so books being but reflections
but images if we would really know we
must go to the thing itself
Better than all the books that are is a
day with the wheat in this year of a
bountiful harvest From any eminence
look across the intervening miles and
say whether there is cr whether there
can be a more magnificent prospect
Even sordid thoughts of the gold to be
exchanged for the grain cannot dispel
tne sentiment
Beyond the roofs and the smoking
chimneys in the middle distance winds
the tree fringed river Between the river
and the bases of the hills spreads the
valley Green grove mounds diversify
the level Farm houses and hay stacks
lend the human element The southern
horizon is rimmed with hills Ravines
and canons show dark against the viv
ider hues of the uplands To the right
a streak of white marks a rocky ledge
Scattered over the landscapelike splash
es of sunshine in the forest is the ripen
ing wheat Not even the sounding waves
of ocean appeal to the senses as does the
wheat
Lights and shadows flit across its sur
face The wind billowing the broad
acres alternately swells into a mighty
crescendo and sinks into rustling mel
ody The air is heavy with the perfume
of the grain burdened with the songs of
birds Quail animate the roadsides
Red wings black birds swifts and swal
lows perch on fence posts swing on
wires skim tie filling heads Sweet
voiced songsters burst into riotous war-
blings Wood peckers add a dash of
color to the scene The wail of the
mourning dove rings from the tree tops
The meadow larks mono song rises from
among the tall grasses Over all hang
the bluest of skiesthe brightest of suns
the most splendid changing cloud forms
Is this not poetry and song a whole li
brary a literature What though it be
not reduced to words and bound in
boards Is it not better as it is What
language can interpret these marvels
And this is but half the story the
other the better for the other is of men
men whose deeds are more truly he
roic than are those of the demi gods
whose exploits are recorded in imperish
able verse men whose deeds will one
day inspire somp poet to immortalize
the doers

Storm Cut a Wide Swath
Curtis Neb July 14 Special to Lin
corn Journal A survey of tho territory
passed over by tho tornado Saturday
evening shows that tho cloud left tho
territory adjacent to the Medicine valloy
at a point about six miles west of Cur
tis trnveled in a direction east of south
through tho county crossing the south
lino about north of Bartley inRedwillow
county Soon after leaving tho Medi
cine valloy tho cloud developed into a
regular tornado and at several points
appear the work of small whirlwinds
like cyclones
The territory covered by the wind is
from four to seven miles wide and so
far as learned twenty seven windmills
were totally destroyed one or two
houses and several frame barns Mr
Jones frame barn and windmill woro
destroyed and portions of the barn were
carried ono half a mile away from where
it stood Fred Hicks lost his windmill
barn and house At one farm the wind
mill stood many rods away from the
house nnd the wind carried the engine
of the wheel and drove it through the
roof of the house Covering a strip
about one mile wide in the heart of the
storm an enormous hailstorm prevailed
beating everything in its course into the
earth nnd many farmers lose all their
crops The small grain was just ready
for the sickle and some were already
cutting the crop One man had 100
acres of wheat which all agreed would
run above forty bushels to the acre He
had just purchased a new machine and
intended to begin the harvest Monday
morning After the storm he could
scarcely have filled a bed tick with the
straw that was left of the field
Oxford A windstorm of cycionic
fury originating in Gosper county
passed over this section last night leav
ing a path of ruin and devastation from
six to eight miles wide Buildings were
damaged many barns destroyed and nu
merous buildings wrecked No lives are
reported lost so far On the farm of
Thomas Sheffrey a barn was blown
away and fourteen work horses killed
outright A heavy fall of hail aided in
the work of destruction of crops which
in many cases will be a complete loss
The damage is immense and more dis
appointing because of the promise of an
extraordinary yield of all products
Arapahoe Hail wind and rain de
stroyed thousands of dollars worth of
property west south northwest and
northeast of here Saturday and Monday
Windmills barns and outhouses were
blown down by the violence of the wind
thousands of acres of ripe grain pounded
in the ground by hail or badly loaded by
rain besides many bridges washed out
by the overflowing of the creeks

The Scientific Germ Killer
It contains every antiseptic known
to science
Is a germ disease of the intestines
The cholera bacteria finds its way
into the animal through the drinking
water or filth passing into the stom
ach and finally down along the intes
tines it sets up fermentation and from
there filters through the blood liver
and other organs
Hog cholera cannot be treated suc
cessfully unless treatment is com
menced before the germ has rpached
the period of rapid multiplication If
taken in time it can be cured and in
all cases prevented by the use of
Liquid Koal because it is the only
known germicide that will pass
through the stomach into the intes
tines and from there into tho blood
permeating the whole system and
still retain its germ killing properties
All other so called cholera cures lose
their potency by the acid reaction of
the gastric juices of the stomach
hence have no value
