A Plunky Show at Best
Tho Howes Great London Shows
which showed here on last Friday was
one of the plunkiest aggregations that
ever went down the pike and will be re
membered by the people of this section
as well as by the people wherever they
have showed as tho most pernicious and
persistent gang of sharpers in a small
way that ever masqueraded under the
title of a show They had about a dozen
carloads of property of every sort not
including the item of gall The police
kept after them so closely that the gang
were not able to do much business here
From evary point where they showed in
this section of Nebraska come reports of
short changings and other small samples
of sharp practice A few were tricked
and robbed of small amounts here but
for the most part the people escaped
loss
Quite Extensive Improvements
The German Congregational church is
now undergoing quite extensive improve
ments All the plastering has been re
moved and the church will be lined and
coiled with steel sheeting All chairs
benches etc have been discarded and
new pews will replace them In all about
S700 will be expended by our Russian-
Germau friends in improving their
church building The next demand on
the brethren will be increased seating
capacity a gallery perhaps as on spec
ial occasions at least the house is too
small

PUBLIC FREE LIBRARY NOTES
The report of the Library Board which
was presented to the City Council on
Monday evening contains some interest
ing statistics The report covers the per
iod from September 10 1902 tho date of
the opening to June 1 1903 A sum
mary of the financial statement follows
Received by donation 81015 01
Spent for books and supplies 957 81
Balance 60 23
Received for fines S 28 21
Spent for sundry minor items 27 74
Balance 50
Tho intrinsic worth of the property
is greatly in excess of what the forego
ing indicates Not only have the mate
rial contributions especially in the form
of books been considerable but the
time and labor bestowed in various di
rections have added vastly to the li
brarys assets so that a statement of the
receipts and disbursements of money
conveys but an inadequate conception of
the real value
The librarys usefulness may bo esti
mated in another and better way It
now contains 1318 books besides 77 vol
umes of bound magazines and a
encyclopedia It receives regularly
by donation and subscription 20 maga
zines and six daily and weekly news
papers In the eight and two thirds
months of its existence ending the first
of June 1903 12208 books were loajied
and 29720 visitors were received Not
even by these figures can the pleasure
and profit derived by the people of Mc
Cook and vicinity from tho establishment
of the library be measured It is free to
all citizens of the county outside of Mc
Cook and many of them avail them
selves of its privileges A movemont is
on foot to secure a Carnegie library de
tails of which will be given in the near
future

singers carried the audience away with
them They make a wealth of marvel

never been equalled by any similar oi

McCook audience On Sunday evening
they gave another concert in the court
house before an even larger audience
than upon Friday night and many insist
that they exceeded their initial effort
Both appearances wore under tho aus
