performance was up to the high standard sot by previous entertainments of the class by local talent The ends were unusually strong the chorus artis tic but might have been stronger with good results the orchestra effective tho jokes accomplished their purpose tho local hits especially the turf investment hits captured tho house Mr OBrien presided debonairly but would have been nioro satisfactory had he raised his voice a notch Altogether tho enter tainment was well received by the audience and tho box offico has no complaint to offer The B M baseball club is the ben eficiary of the affair and its treasury has been very materially augmented by tho net proceeds Realizing the effort required to pro duce an amateur performance like that of Monday evening The Tribune feels constrained to immortals The soloists were given enthusiastic recalls Messrs S B McLean T E Mc Carl H C Clapp F H Strout and J R McCarl adding to their already well established reputations Elsie Campbell cave one of the sweetest numbers of the evening Under the Bamboo Tree The quartette was compelled to fill but gave a very satisfactory account of itself notwithstanding The end topi cal comic and other efforts of the end men took the houso A Few Sugar Beet Items The businessmen of McCook stand ready to assist financially farmers who will contract to raise sugar beets Culbertson has already contracted 1100 acres of sugar beets for this sea son while McCook has only 353 acres to her credit Let it be clearly understood the fractory will doubtless go where the most beets are raised Fremont offered 125000 for a factory but the factory went seven miles out of Fremont Died of Scarlet Fever William Golds eight-year-old daugh ter died suddenly on Wednesday about five olock from scarlet fever She was ill but a short time complaining for the first time on the morning of her death The remains wero buried in Riverview cemetery Thursday afternoon at two oclock no services being held at the house and but guest of her sister Mrs A- P Thomson for a few weeks Mrs Frank Brown of Menominee Michigan was tendered a surprise paity at the home of Mrs A L Knowland Saturday evening of last week Mrs Frank Harris came down from Denver last Friday night and was a guest of McCook friends until Monday night Rena accompanied her W A Cassell arrived in the citylast night from Chilhowie Virginia He reports his mothers condition as still serious while his father has not been materially benefitted by the change to Virginia Mrs M M Delhunty and mother took their departure Wednesday morn ing for Denton Nebraska where Mrs Delhunty will embark in business Her establishment at this place will continue under the management of Miss Pearl Zint T W Short who was burned out the fore part of the week at Bartley Neb and lost everything not having any insurance on his stock is here to com plete the sale of some property that he has at Douglass to raise funds with which to go in business again at that place Nebraska City cor Journal 23rd A C Wilson county surveyor of Danbury has resigned his office in prepa ration for removing from the county He was in the countyseat Wednesday and gave us the information that he would leave first of next week for his new home in Norwood Wright county Missouri The Tribune always notes with regret the removal of a Redwillow county farmer but withholds not its wish that dimming a young man em ployed in tho machine shop hero had a preliminary hearing before Police Judgo Berry Sunday night and was held to appear in the next session of district court to answer to tho serious charge of attempted assault tho sixteen-year-old daughter of Paul Anton being the com plaining witness for the state The alleged attempt is said to have been made about ten oclock Sunday night near the baseball ground between the city and West McCook as the girl and a fourteen-year-old sister were re turning home from attending the Salva tion Army meeting in South McCook There wero some evidences of a scuffle The girls ran home and informed their father and tho arrest followed shortly after J B Cumming came over from Leba non Monday evening and furnished the necessary bond for his son 50000 McCooks Usual Generosity The collection for the famine stricken district in Sweden and Norway taken up by F G Westland and Alec Beckstrom amounted to 9425 which was sent in to the treasurer of the relief committee at Lincoln on Friday of last week and in their acknowledgement of tho receipt they thank the people of McCook for their generosity and expressed surprise at the alacrity with which they opened up their purses to people in need But pshaw that is like McCook Uncle Billy Coleman has since contributed SI and C A Ward 50 cents If there are any others who would wish to give something just hand it to F G Westland or Alec Beckstrom and they will see that it reaches its intended mission Contributed Keeps Oldest Settlers Thinking This somewhat extraordinary winter weather is causing the oldest settlers to revise their figures on the winter moisture question The season of 1902 1903 threatens to be a record breaker as to snowfall and continuous cold weather spells S W Nebraskas records show severer stormier winters but few winters to equal the present for con tinuous cold snowy weather If The Tribune were to lapse into prophecy a dangerous habit by the by it would forecast a wheat crop of large propor tions coming season Rocky Ford Cantaloupes This season Messrs Ferguson Kelley will experiment to the extent of about forty acres in the cultivation of the famous Rocky Ford cantaloupe These cantaloupes are of the small sweet order are of fine flavor and very pop ular It is not believed that any diffi culty will be met in producing the best results If so returned home from their visit with relatives at Plattsmouth Engine No 2G4 has been placed in the shop for an overhauling and 63 will go in in a few days George H Bailey has recovered suffi ciently from rheumatism to resume work in tho bridge gang William Green of blacksmith force had his right foot badly injured last Satur day by a car axle falling on it Way car No 128 is in for repairs and No 129 is just out of the carpenter shop No 124 will go out next week Steve Finn is visiting the boys here for a few days and Engineer L P Neil son has his place at Akron during his absence Engineer F G Westland and a fellow countryman have raised almost a hun dred dollars for their suffering country men in Norway and Sweden The yardmasters office is undergoing repairs and will be repainted on the in side A new desk will be among the im provements to Cartys headquarters Engineer PTimblin resigned from the companys service first of week Engi neer Ellis Ford has his run between Oberlin and Republican for a few days Agent Francis Enlow and family came in from Lafayette Colorado on 14 last Saturday and were guests of C W Keys and family until Monday morning when they took No 12 for Cambridge on a visit They will also visit his brother Clarence in Holdrege before re turning home It is stated at headquarters that sixty miles of the Western division will receive new and heavier steel rails The present 65 pound rails will be replaced by 75 pound steel The rails will be distribu ted from this point and will be laid east from McCook east from Akron and east from Denver so it is Hastings eleva tor man and J E Kelley of our city becamo tho owners of 465 shares of tho total of 500 shares of the stock of tho McCook Irrigatidn and Watorpowor Co This of course gives them absolute and undisputed control of tho property which to them has peculiar value as thoy own a thousand acres of splendid land just south ofthe city which is all under tho ditch land enough of their own Lo mako tho ditch profitable The present officers will of courso re main in office until tho next regular election in April coming The entire ditch will bo cleaned and overhauled placing the property in good shape for service next season All tho flumes on tho ditch wero overhauled and rebuilt last season so that tho cleaning which will necessarily widen and deepen to its original size will French closed his Masonic School of Instruction in this city last Saturday night with a grand meeting which was attended by a largo number of the brethren of tho local lodgo and away as were most of the sessions of tho week Bob is dearly beloved and immensely admired by all the Masons and his schools of instruction are looked forward to with eagerness Ho is one of tho best posted members of tho
