After all is said the issue before the
people this fall is prosperity or panic
The prophets of pessimism predict
prosperity by pulling for a policy which
produces panic
The Democrats are so concerned about
the franchise for tho Filipino that they
have no time to grant it to tho negro
The fact should not bo overlooked that
every issue presented by tho Democrats
is silver plated in thatKansasCity shop
The Republicans of tho First commis
sioner district will do well and wisely to
reelect D A Waterman lie has made
unconscientious and painstaking commis
sioner
It was Br an who accused the Amer
ican soldiers of idling round It may
bo assorted with a good degree of confi
dence that Spain is grateful because the
boys did not get a hustle on them or
they would have lost their Peninsula as
well as tho islands
The educational interests of Nebraska
dopeud wholly upon an official in the
state superintendents office who is amply
qualified for that very imporlaut posi
tion The present occupant W K
Fowler has shown himself to be an
efficient man for the position and we
must see that he is reelected Cooker
County Tribune August 8 1902
The late muillur attaenmont to piano
fortes is a genuine God send to the ner
vous and over wrought American And
we hold it to be strictly within the
bounds of equity and justice that every
piano in the future shall be so equipped
and that every muffler shall be nailed
down to be released only in case of war
or to send firo alarms This will dis
courage calisthenics but will distinctly
encourage the real thing in tho divine
music
The growing popularity of Judge
Norris the Republican nominee for con
gressman in the Fifth district is most
highly gratifying to the people of his
home town and very encouraging to the
Republicans of the district as indicating
the increasing certainty of his election
The judge more then wears well he
grows in cue popular esteem witn ac
quaintance His speeches and meetings
with the people of the district are natur
ally resulting in the enlargement of his
circle of supporters and admirers He
compels -and strengthens confidence
among the people who have just right
to expect that he will protect their inter
ests to tho limit of his ability and op
portunity

Another Fake Home Dealers are Best
Not long ago advertisements appeared
of tho John Quincy company and the
Louis Vohon company of Chicago offer
ing great bargains in sewing machines
Among those who read this literature
was Miss Emma Nording She wanted
a sewing machine and she sent 1558 to
tho address of the advertisers She
waited long and anxiously for the sow
ing machine She wroto asking if the
money had been received but no answer
came A short time ago she recived a
postal card which told tho story briefly
but plainly It read as follows
Chicago 111 8 6 1902
Dear Sir I have been appointed re
ceiver of tho Louis Vehon company and
tho John Quincy companv by the judge
of tho U S D C Tho estate will bo
closed up as rapidly as possible and you
will receive an official notice in due time
Respectfully
No18448 S1558 Joseph Seigel
It will bo noticed that Miss Nordings
claim is 18448 and if each number rep
resents 1528 for money sent in the
bankrupt firm must have at least 287
49992 of the peoples money It is a
slick way of gathering in the coin Ad
vertise something valuable for a small
price and when the victims have all
bitten and begin to get uneasy hide your
wealth and take tho benefit of the bank
rupt law
Such fakes fatten upon tho fatal pro
pensity of the people to go away from
homo to get sumething for nothing in
stead of patronizing tho homo business

West Side Improvements
William Doyle or the Willow has com
menced the erection of a dwelling house
for himself on Lower McFarland street
a lew lots north of the Palmer house
It will be 26x30 feet two stories high
Mr Doyle also contemplates tho erection
of a livery barn 50x80 feet 16 ft posts
on the corner just opposite the Palmer
house
Frank Stillman has in the foundation
for a sales stable about 50x70 feet on the
corner just south of the old Central
house corner
A dwelling house is now under way
just west of the old stone blacksmith
shop on West Railroad street
And some others are hatching
A Difference in Opinion
Sheriff Crabtree has had A L Norris
a telegrapher from Texas in charge all
week under suspicion of mentally
unbalanced An investigation by the
insanity board was not conclusive as to
his state of mind and he is being hold
awaiting his recovery from excessive
alcoholism The lightning manipulators
idea is that he is all shot to pieces
while the theory of the board is that he
has been shot with too many slugs of
coffin varnish Norris celebrated his
arrival from the west Saturday or Sun
day by putting in an appearance at the
Western Union headquarters and sum
marily discharging the whole force a
pretty nutty performance
Their Tenth Anniversary
The Ladies of the Maccabees of the
World will celebrate their tenth anni
versary on the eveninc of Wednesday
October 1st in Menards opera house
commencing at eight oclock sharp In
asmuch as this is a national event and
all hives throughout the land are re
quested to begin exercises at exactly the
same time it is hoped that all members
of the orders and friends will make a
strict point of being prompt
An interesting program will be ren
dered after which the evening will be
turned over to the Young Lady Bees
who are now arransriner for a ball nf
most attractive particulars Tickets for
the ball are 100 and are on sale at Mc
Connell Berrys drug store It will be
one of the events of the season
A New Star Route Service
The star
route will begin to operate September
22nd with Albert T Wilson as contrac
tor and mail carrier It will run six
times a week connecting with the
Center route at Boxelder on
both up and down trips This will ive
the Quick and Centerpoint people a
daily service also those living along the
route who will provide mail boxes
It is risking something to ask the
public to place a piece of fiction along
side of Poes best work The editor of
the Cosmopolitan ventures this in the
following note which appears in the
September issue One does not often
find a story which seems to come in the
classification of Edjjar Allen Poes best
work Yet one might be tempted to ask
such a place for The Canonic Curse
which Arthur E McFarlane contributes
to the Cosmopolitan for September
