THE SUMMKK SCHOOL AXD INSTITUTE
Tho visitors to the Normal school during tho
first week have carried away distinct impres
sions of its usefulness Tho perfect organiza
tion is shown in tho orderliness with which
classes chango from room to room at the close
of class periods and in tiie immediate taking up
of tho work without loss of time This has been
a matter of general remark Tho work which
will be done will cover a large scope but vis
itors are surprised at the thoroughness with
which details are treated by the instructors
Prof A O Thomas proposes to introduce
his Botany class to one hundred varieties of
plant life and when one talks with him tho
feeling is that this introduction will mean a
thorough acquaintance Prof G II Thomas
will take tho History class through e complete
review of TJ S History This means a great
deal more than the handling of the text book
There is a distinct historical feeling manifest
in the work of this class and interesting histori
cal side lights are thrown upon the subject and
the causal forces underlying tho period are
brought out in a way to make it lived before tho
imagination of the student The writer feels
thau the work of this class will make the capa
ble teacher a philosophical student of history
The visitors from abroad during the first week
of the school were Hon W E Andrews of Wash
ington D C Auditor for tho Treasury Deputy
State Supt J L McBrien and Rev L P
Luddon of Lincoln The lecture of Mr An
drews on Wednesday afternoon on Our Common
School and his lecture in the evening of the
same day on Christian Civilization show a
deep interest i n tho cause o f education
While tho lecture of the evening was tho more
scholarly that of the afternoon was of greater
practical benefit to tho teacher It exhibited
the actual maguitutj of tho public school prob
lem in this country Mr McBrien spent Thurs
day in the school making a thorough examina
tion of all the departments of its work of which
he spoke in detail in tho afternoon Mr Mc
Brien expressed the greatest pleasure in the
complete systematization of the work so early
in the term He is a pleasing and forceful
speaker and keyed up a notch higher the en
thusiasm already aroused by the teachers of the
school Rev Luddon preached Sunday even
ing and on Monday he addressed tho teachers
on Ideas and Ideals and in tho evening
lectured before the teachers and citizens on the
subject Individuality This was a strong
lecture The second week opened with six ad
ditional students and four more came in today
