A Temperance Promoter
The Corn Belt has the following to say
of one railroad as a temperance promoter
The Burlington road has always ob
jected to even a moderate use of red
liquor by its employes Too much de
pends upon their clear headed under
standing of all their duties The adop
tion of it of more stringent rules against
the use of liquor by employes is a
is a movement in the interest of public
safety and good railroading that will
have the unqualified endorsement of the
tiaveling public
The Burlington in common with most
railroad corporations had already put in
force a rigid ban on the use of intoxicants
by employes who had anything to do
with the operation of trains not only
on duty but also while oil duty This
rule has now been extended so as to
apply to employes in all departments
including track bridge and building de
partments The new book of rules just
issued by the company contains this
paragraph
The use of intoxicants by employes
while on duty is prohibited Their
habitual use or the frequenting of places
where they are sold is sufficient cause
for dismissal
The Great Dismal Swamp
Of Virginia is a breeding ground of malaria
germs So is low wet or marshy ground every
where Theso germs cause weakness chills and
fever aches in tho bones and muscles and may
induce dangerous maladies But Electric Bit
ters never fail to destroy them and cure mala
rial troubles They will surely prevent typhoid
We tried many remedies for malaria and
stomach and liver trobbles write John Charles
ton of Byesville O but found nothing as
good as Electric Bitters Try them Only 50c

Fastest Authentic Run on Record
The fastest run ever made by a rail
road train for the distance was that
accomplished last month on the Burling
ton and Missouri River raliroad between
the two stations of Eckley and Wray
Colorado The two towns are 14S miles
apart and the run was made in an even
nine minutes which works out at a rate
of 9SG6 miles per hour The train was
made up of a mail car baggage car two
chair cars three sleeping cars a dining
car and a private car or nine cars in all
It was drawn by a ten wheel engine with
19 inch by 2G inch cylinders and 7o inch
drivers the line is on a down grade with
a maximum of 32 feet to the mile The
timing of the train was done in the ob
servation car by five watches one of
which was held by the conductor and
the record is considered to be so accur
ate and well authenticated that it has
received the official confirmation of the
Chicago Burlington and Quincy rail
road Scientific American May 10th
