thefood they do endanger the health All physicians will tell you that alum in food is deleterious The Boarding House Its Environment Tho house itself is not one that would attract attention It is a large but unpietentious frame structure painted rod with a wide veranda across the front quite plain and homely yet not without an air of modest comfort It is set back from the street in a plot of grass while outside the walk is another strip of verdure A double row of trees lines the well paved street and just in front of the house stands a magnificent oak that throws a friendly shade on hot summer mornings Behind the house is a tine yard unusnal surroundings for a city house containing two apple trees that at the proper season burst into bloom and in early fall bear fruit In May the lilac bushes along the fence shed the perfume of their blossoms and later a great bed of lilies of the vallty in one corner is sprinkled with flower sprays The house is situated in one of the prettiest quietest parts of town within easy reach of the lines of transportation yet far enough away to insure immunity from the noise1 dust and cinders of pas sing trains and the rattle and screech of the cable cars The music of the waves pounding upon the beach may be heard by its tenants It is in a neigh borhood of homt s detached houses each with its bit of ground its well trimmed lawn its flowers and vinos The street is frequented by vehicles of all sorts on their way to the park and Midway and of summer evenings its walks are the favorite resort for sauntering couples who seek the apparent seclusion of its shaded paths for interchange of thote endless nothings that lovers find to say When the human lovers are gone the cats come from their hidin 1 laces and howl their dismal love songs the whole night through To the women the household is in debted for its knowledge of the neigh bors In the city men have opportunity only for hard work The women of a boarding house have no other objects in life than to view the world from a rock ing chair on the front porch to quarrel with the landlady and to foment trouble in what would otherwise be a peaceful and happy community Women scrut inize keenly They seem in fact to be endowed with a sixth sense which enables them not only to s -eat a bcciet from afar but to penetrate its profound est depths To the casual observer for instance the house on the corner is a mere com fortable old fashioned dwelling but they tell us it is the home 01 a 4 air 01 young and affectionate householders They see the husband kiss wife good bye each morning as he leaves for his work and they say at the last turn before he passes from sight he waves her a fare well Yet they whisper darkly of a child wno aiea unaer mysterious circum stances The women have discovered that a tragedy lurks behind the closely drawn blinds of the house next door that the place is the abode of a poor widow whose only son went insane from over work There is a note of piety in their tones as they speak of her lonely and sorrowful existence A little furthur down the street in a plain box like house another widow lives she and her daughter The hus band and father went away one morning a strong and healthy man A few hours later his blackened corpse burned al most beyond recognition was taken from the ruins of the building in which he worked Across the street in a pretty cottage lives a widow with eleven children a devoted family except for the eldest son a waj ward boy who insists upon marrying one of whom his relatives dis approve The frame building surrounded by a disproportionately high iron fence with the street number emblazoned in gilt figures above the gate is the home of a romance The occupants of the place are newly wedded The groom is not much past seventy so the women char itably say the bride is well along in the forties A jealous husband he if our information is correct who erected the fence for the better protection of his lady We are told though the report lacks confirmation that when he goes away he locks tho gate and puts the key in his pocket An especial interest is taken in the movements of this house hold whose members are watched through opera glasses Another house on our street shelters vieoulo who believe in noither sickness iordeath or rather that sickness is sin md that death is its consequence When a few months ago tho aged par nU of the wife followed one tho other a quick succession to another land no t ir was shed for their demise no shred of Mourning worn Tho remarks of the fern linn boarders on tho occasion wore not iily picturesque but they wen canstic Then there is a retired minister with two cha uug daugutors wno have many adm vrs and there is a house where a nuniVr of Railroad at the Twelfth street de pot As a result the railroad telephone was declared to be a success The train was stopped near Fulton Ky and the telephone was connected with the regular telegraph wire running to Chicago In spite of the fact that the message had to travel over iron wires which ran parallel to more than a score of other wires every word was distinctly heard by Mr Parsons The inventor asserts it makes no dif ference whether or not telegraphic mes sages are being flashed over the wire simultaneously with the telephone mes sage This was tested by the successful transmission of a telegraphic communi cation from Fulton at the same time Parsons was conversing with the crew Tho result of an over indulgence in food or drink are promptly rectified without pain or discomfort by
