Star Mail Routes
Tho postofflce department will receive
proposals forcarfying mail on star routes
in Nebraska until December 3rd Con
tracts will be awarded on or before Feb
ruary 1st to go into effect July 1st
1902 and to continue for a period of four
years Contractor required to live on or
convenient to the route and be immedi
ately responsible for the service Ser
vice will be let to tho lowest responsible
bidder who complies with the instruc
tions governing bids Full instructions
withproposal blanks can be had at post
offices on the different routes or by writ
ing the second assistant postmaster

delivery Anyone lving on tho route
except within 80 rods of a postoffice or
the incorporate limits of a town can
have their mail delivered without ex
pense by placing a box on the route of
the carrier so that he will not havo to
drive out of his way or get out of his
vehicle to deliver it

Too Much for Oberlin
The McCook football team proved to
be too much for the Oberlin team last
Friday afternoon on the local gridiron
the former winning by a score of 22 to 0
in two 25 minute halves As to weight
the teams were pretty nearly matched
but in team work and knowledge of the
game the local team was much superior

The Halloween party InBt night by tho
young ladies of the Awl Os club nt tho home of
the Misses Doan to their gentlomon friends was
a most delightful and brilliant affair Inclus
ive of guests there were about sixty participants
in the happy function which was in all respects
up to the traditions of the club which is re
sponsible for some of the most charming society
events of our city
The momborspf tho club and their guosts for
tho first half hour of the evening wero masked
in sheets and pillow cases and cards were pro
vided oach to record guesses at the identity of
those masked a prize going to the best guesser
After unmasking a variety of games were
played
A gypsy den presided over by Lottie Knipplo
and Emma Porry was a feature They gavo
each inquirer an article indicative of fortune
instead of telling fortunes
One of tho chief fortune tolling features was
pyramid of vari colored burning candles around
which all marched in procession At tho base
of each taper was a bit of paper telling in rhyme
the fortune of the recipient
Tho two parlors of tho residence were deco
rated In white and yellow and a third room in
the McCook Athletic Club colors black and
yellow Portieres wore mado of white ribbons
in different lengths to which wero pendant
bright red apples Tho electric lights wero sub
dued by green paper and candles in artistic can
delabra suffused a mellow light The floral
decorations were carnations
Refreshments were served by tho ladies of tho
Dorcas society Tho dining room and table
decorations wore in club colors white and
yellow Battenberg oor j allow Tho center
piece was a largo pumpkin cut in basket shape
and filled with fruit In carrying out the color
design the ico croam was served in orange
cases Tho refreshments -wore very dainty and
toothsome

Jail Delivery at lndianola
Richard H Lawrence the machinist
who has been in jail at lndianola for
several months past awaiting trial for
selling mortgaged property broke out of
jail last Friday night and up to this
time has not been apprehended Par
ties from outside provided him with a
crowbar to break out and it is said have
been assisting him in getting away He
has been simulating insanity in jail
recently which gave him access to the
jail corridor There is a suspicion that
he is or is becoming mentally unsound

the coast to coast limited on Novem
ber 3 A speed war among the roads
concerned will ensue and the struggle
for mail business will again be on

Three of the five big new engines or
dered for the Western division have
already arrived at headquarters The
numbers are 369 471 372 These are
the largest engines yet used on this
division weighing about 125 tons They
are distinguished from the other big
machines on the division in a number of
respectsbut the large firebox on trailers
is the chief difference It is uncom
monly wide and has two doors These
engines have five blow off cocks and it is
claimed they can make 5000 miles be
fore it is necessary to have their boilers
washed out Their water capacity too
is considerably greater than any now in
use being 6000 gallons These are stu
pendous machines are attracting consid
erable attention and comment from the
men in the motive department One
of the five is to be a compound engine
