Between 25 and 30 Tons
Horatio Stonp had some curiosity the
other day to know just how his sugar
beets are coming on and measured off
and dug up a square rod of them and
the result was encouraging indeed There
were 157 beets in the square rod and
they weighed on the scales 343l pounds
which would make 549G0 pounds or a
little over 27 tons to the acre if the av
erage should be maintained At 4 this
would make S10 per acre with an ex
pense of 825 per acre Horatio expects
his beets to not fall below 25 tons to the
acre at any rate which will make him a
handsome profit

Another Sugar Beet Analysis
The result of the last analysis of sugar
beets sent from McCook to the Ameri
can Beet Sugar Co at Grand Island is
given below It will be observed that
the samples are quite uniform and that
the sugar per cent and the purity per
cent are high
FARMERS SUGAR TURITY

S P Hart 103 733
H Stone 92 727
H Stone 105 78 5
GF Randel 112 b25

In this exhibit it will be observed that
the dry culture and the irrigated beets
as to sugar and purity per cents do not
greatly differ the advantage in these
particulars being with the dry culture
farmers On the other hand the ad

the irrigators
Samples will be sent to the factory

Dispatching by Telephone
The Burlington has tried the use of
telephones on telegraph wires along its
system The experiment has not been
entirely successful and for that reason
Burlington men read with interest a
statement that the Santa Fe had suc
ceeded in perfecting a device that will
obviate the obstacles heretofore encount
ered With the Burlington the trouble
was that while the phones could be used
for talking the bells would not ring It
was impossible to call one phone by
ringing the bell at the other end The
Santa Fe experienced this same trouble
but later reports indicate that the call
bells were made to work the phone be
ing usea successiully while the same
wires were in service for telegraphic
purposes
Out in the Black Hills country the
Burlington is using phones at one or
two places where telegraph wires do not
run or where an operator is not em
ployed In such cases a telephone line
is strung to the nearest telegraph sta
tion and by this means trains are some
times moved
It is a belief that the limit to the use
of the telephone in dispatching trains
will be found on branch lines where there
is not much business On main lines
where there is lots of traffic the tele
graph instrument with written messages
will be found more reliable It is much
easier to trace errors where the telegraph
is in use Lincoln Journal
