It may not be generally known but it is a fact
that 95 per cent , of nickel cigars are made of scraps
and pickups and doctored to imitate good tobacco.
Such cigars cost almost nothing to manufacture , and
yet you are asked to pay 5 cents for them. Aside
from the argument that you are entitled to the limit
for your jnoney , these doctored cigars , for many
reasons , are unfit to be smoked.

Mrs. Henry Gale is visiting with her daugh
ter , Mrs. I. T. Birdsall , this week.
Politics is waxing warm-in spite of cool
weather and frosty receptions to candidates.
Meeker and Thomas are gathering their
crop of sugar beet ? , which are said to be of
excellent quality and goodly quantity.
Quite a number from this vicinity took in
the Meiklejohn meeting in McCook , last week ,
and all pronounce it the most successful cam
paign talk of the year.
Frank Fitch and Roy Jacobs will soon re
turn from their schooling in Lincoln. Frank
in time to vote for McKinley and Roy to do a
little courting in November.
Frank Golfer says , "He wishes the people
would either leave their tobacco at home or
bring pails to spit in % vhen they attend the
next rally at the school-house. "
The Republican club met as usual , last Fri
day evening , but as they were shy a speaker ,
they held a short testimonial meeting much
on the order of a Methodist camp meeting.
The people who started to Sunday-school ,
last Sunday , afternoon were slightly disap
pointed. They found the house nailed up .
As it was rather cool they soon left their re
ligion and went their way , but not rejoicing.
W. G. Button has been having much trouble
with his neighbors' stock lately. Button has
plenty of good feed and the wandering stock
seem to know and also to appreciate this fact.
He threatens to shut up all stray stock which
bothers him in the future. Take warning.
W. S. Fitch had an accident , last Thursday
evening , which will cause him the loss of
sight in one and possibly both eyes. He was
chopping wood when a piece of brush flew up
and struck him in the eye cutting a gash in
the eyeball. He is at Lincoln under the care
of a specialist now , and it is hoped that he
will save the sight of one eye.
Last week , bills were out announcing a
"Fusion Rally" at the Fitch school-house and
judging from reports they should have been
labeled Con-fusion rally. There was a good
ly attendance and every precinct was well
represented. The audience secured admission
by breaking the lock off the door ; one window
was smashed etc. We had the good fortune
( or misfortune ) to be present part ot the
time and on entering , this is what we saw :
A conglomerated mixture of Republicans ,
Pops , Democrats and numerous small boys.
Mr. Lincoln , candidate for state senator , was
wildly gesticulating and blowing about the
evils of imperialism and wanting us to make
the sacrifice and vote for principle lit may
have been principal ) in preference to party.
This we will do in preference to his party.
Mr. Lincoln was so well wound up that he
talked some of his audience to sleep a num
erous men and boys were lying around in a
state of utter unconsciousness. Mr. C. H ,
Boyle was next called on and we will give
him credit for having more sense than some
of his political friends who were with him.
He had little to say and he said it ; he simply
told an Irish graveyard story and sat down
and was loudly cheered and applauded for it.
Next the so-called "Cyclone" Matthews of
Hartley 'fprmeily of Carson's dairy , was
awakened' from a peaceful slumber to tell
what he knew. After listening to him for
awhile we recognized that gentle voice as the
same with which he used to call the bossies
on the ranch. Numerous short stories told to
amuse the children as most of the men were
asleep. Taking it all around it was a most
successful and harmonious Confusion rally.
A Village Blacksmith Saved His Little
Son's Life.
Mr. II. II. Black , the well-known village
blacksmith at Grahamsville , Sullivan Co , N.
V. , says : "Our little son , five years old , has
always been subject to croup , and so bad have
the attacks been that we have feared many
times that he would die. \ \ e have had the
doctor and used many medicines , but Cham-
bei Iain's Cough Remedy is now our sole re
liance. It seems to dissolve the tough mucus
and by giving frequent doses when the cioupy
symptoms appear we have found that the
dreaded croup is cured before it gets settled. "
There is no danger in giving this remedy for
it contains no opium or other injurious drug
and may be given as confidently to a babe as
to an adult. For sale by'McConnell & Berry.
