HUNG CHANG is unlike "The Father of His Country" in one particular at least : It's no trouble to him to lie. lNDAlrtn.A gave birth , last week , to two new members of the newspaper family , the Sun and the Republican. J. S. Phillips is responsible for the Fusion Sun and W. C. Bond is god-father to the Republican Republican. THE Republican senatorial committee of the agth district will meet in McCook on iiext Tuesday afternoon for the pur pose of selecting a date for holding the next senatorial convention , and for the transaction of any other proper business. WHAT if all these terrible charges be ing made by the Fusion newspapermen in Red Willow county against each other are true ? At all events , the Populists are proper objects of sympathy. Their most earnest , anguishing prayer musl be to be delivered from their fool ( news paper ) friends. RANDOLPH , whom nature unkindly obscured by "borning" him Smith , calls Fusion an "Accursed , putrid mass , a stinking carcass , " and adds the heartfelt prayer that it may be swept from the face of the earth. Samuel evi dently does not want the Democrats oi Red Willow county to vote for the "Warming Pan" for congress. THE Republican party has demon strated that self-government is not only possible , but honorable and full of glory. The leaders of today take council of the wisdom of the past. They are the dis tributors not the hoarders of liberty. They gave freedom to Cuba and Porto Rico and will give that freedom to the Philippines which will best protect indi vidual rights and guarantee the respect of other powers. This is the imperialism of true freedom , the royalty of justice , and will soon be recognized as the -crowning glory of national achievement. WHAT is Mr. Bryan's plan for the dis position of the Philippines ? The only inference from his speeches is that he would let loose fair promises and hon eyed words , and on the strength of these would withdraw the American troops from the Philippines. What would pre vent , after withdrawal of the American troops , the same horrors in Manila that have visited Pekin ? What would be come of the natives who had helped to suppress the Tagal insurrection after they were thus left to the devices of Aguinaldo , whose cruelty did not stop at the murder of his own generals ? THE "Full Dinner Pail" is an argu ment for the farmer as well as for the city laborer. Who supplies what is put in the pail ? The farmer. If the city laborer has his wages cut in two by free silver , and is put out of a job by the closing of the mills , the farmer suffers equally ; for the farmer may give away , but he cannot sell , the products of his farm which the city laborer cannot af ford to buy. It is because of the "full dinner pail" that the farmer is getting so much better prices for what he sells than he could get before the election of McKiiiley. It is because of the "full dinner pail" that he has paid off his mortgages , and become a lender of money' where he used to be a borrower. WITH the exception of two years , years productive of distress , hunger , bankruptcy and panic , the destiny of the nation has been partially or entirely under the control of the Republican party ever since the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln in iS6r. During these forty years the country has advanced by leaps and bounds in population , wealth , material , social and intellectual develop ment. The Trans-Mississippi region has been converted from buffalo ranges to imperial states , bridges have been thrown across mighty rivers , railways have been built over the mountains , millions of homes have been created , schools with out number have been built , colleges have been endowed , human liberty has been extended , the verdict of the ballot has been respected ( in Republican states ) , and the republic has a deeper hold on the affections of its citizens than ever before , and compels respect abroad. Colonel - ' onel Comfort's ingenuity and lung power to make one grow profitably and credit ably. Such methods applied to affairs of state or business would inevitably wreck them , and are additional evidence that the Republicans should win in this county , this year. , WHILE THE TRIBUNE believes in en forcing the present game law , it believes that far more radical legislation is needed and should be enacted at the coming session of the Nebraska legislature. The killing of all wild or game birds should be absolutely prohibited under severe penalty for a period of years five years at least. The grasshopper plague alone demands this action. These pests are appearing in eastern counties and the necessity of action must be apparent to all Nebraskans. This seems to be a practical action it should become a fact of the next legislature. BRYAN would give absolute independ ence to the Philippines. This of course means that the flag shall be furled and the army recalled. Will he explain how this can be done ? Is there any constitutional provision for alienating American territory ? If there is one con stitutional argument against acquiring territory there are a dozen against abandoning territory. The rebellion settled that question once for all. As well talk about abandoning Texas , Alas ka , Kentucky or Ohio. Methods of ad ministration are legitimate questions for party differences , but to deny a fact solemnized by treaty and ratified by congress is to betray unpardonable ig norance of the powers and functions o government. We publish an advertisement of Kodol Dyspepsia Cure in our columns , this is sue , and wish to say to our readers that we believe this preparation is worthy of a trial by any person suffering from that agonizing disease. We honestly believe it will do for you all the manufacturers claim for it. Kodol Dyspepsia Cure is prepared by the well-known and reliable firm ofE. C. DeWitt & Co. , Chicago , and from our lorig experience in a business sense , with that firm as advertisers , we feel safe in saying , that they would not place on the market a preparation'for the cure of dyspepsia unless they had a remedy of the highest merit and conscientiously believed it would cure that almost uni versal complaint. We further add that if this preparation is equal to the other well known remedies made by them , viz : DeWitt's Little Early Risers , DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve , and One Minute Cough Cure , it will speedily win its way into public favor. We cheerfully and heartily give our public endorsement to this concern , and the reliability of the goods they manu facture , which latter has been largely the means of their success ; and in writ ing this voluntary endorsement on our part , we feel that we are simply perform ing a duty that we owe our readers. A high trestle bridge more than a Quarter of a ihlle long , supporting the single track of the Nickel Tlate rail road , spans the valley of Grand river , east of ralnesvllle , O. The bridge Is little wider than the distance between the rails , and the ties are placed eight or ten Inches apart , the space between being open to the river below. A young man who crossed recently had a thrilling experience on the bridge. lie had just passed the center when a fast train rounded the curve behind him. As the engine whistled he quickened his pace. With every step the train was rushing nearer , and there was not a moment to lose. Once the young man stumbled and seemed about to fall , but quickly re gained his balance and hurried on. As he reached the place for which he had started the train was close behind , and he had just time to swing himself over the side of the bridge as the locomotive thundered by. The ends of the ties were slippery with grease from drip ping axle boxes , and his foot slipped wide as he left the track. His right hand , stretched blindly out before him , touched a. round Iron bar , bracing two parts of the bridge , and , with a grip like that of a drowning man , his fin gers clasped around it. For a moment he swung in empty air. In auother'his left hand had found a place beside his right , and his feet touched the wel come edge of a brace below. With bleeding fingers clutching the slender Iron bar that vibrated widely from side to side , moments seemed hours. At last the train passed , and the young man was able to climb slowly to the track above. Unnerved by the tryIng - Ing experience , he lay for a moment stretched across the rails and , then rising to his feet , with blanched face and unsteady limbs , made his way to firm ground. Cleveland Leader. THE MILL RUNS ITSELF. Economical Way of Doliipr Business on a Connecticut Farm. Joe McCormick of the International Pulp company tells a delicious story of paper making In Connecticut , which shows that operating a mill is not such a serious matter as these big proprie tors would have us believe. Strolling along the countryside in haymaking time , Mr. McCormlck happened on a little paper mill which buzzed merrily In a shady dell , with everything clean and sweet around it. A look In the office showed no one there , and the vis itor then wandered over the mill , hop ing to find some one to whom he could talk business. The machine was hum ming along , and it seemed impossible that there should be no one in attend ance. But even shouting failed to bring forth signs of life , and Mr. McCormick was about to leave when he spied some men in a hayfleld some distance away. "I say , " he called out to the nearest one when he got within hearing , "who runs this mill ? " "I do , " was the. reply. "Well , who's the owner ? " "Why , I am , to be sure. " "Do you mean to say that the mill runs itself ? " "Cert. We start her up at G in , the morning , and she runs till G in the evening. This mill's been weaned , stranger ; she don't need a nurse. While I'm getting in hay she puts half a ton of paper on the roll. Gee up , Bess ! " Paper Trade Journal. Table Talk. j Rather curiously Roxane in "Cyrano | de Bergerac" belongs to the modern type which dates from the days of the Hotel do Rambouillet and has al ways had its votaries in France. To those precieuses mere conversation was une betise. They liked declama tions ; discussion , not on the right of woman to the ballot , but whether she should be held a little higher than the angels or consent to be beloved. This phase of preciosity led up to the French salon , where that hothouse fashion of preparing an intellectual bill of fare for guests found its most ac ceptable phase. Mme. Canipan , whose advice may be said to have formed a whole genera tion of charming women , used to pre scribe the subject of talk for dinner tables , just as" certain coteries of wo men prescribe it loday. This was her system : "With 12 at table , talk voyage ; and literature ; with eight , the fine arts , science , invention ; with six , politics or philosophy ; with four , sentiment , ro mantic adventure ; with two , talk of yourself ; egoism belongs to the tete-a- tete. The London Daily Mail says if an aerial machine were capable of travel ing at any rate up to 1,000 miles an hour a traveler in it , starting westward from London at a speed of GGO miles an hour , would arrest the progress of time. If ho started at 10 a. m. , it would always be to him 10 a. m. Should he find his unending day mo notonous , he could reverse his direc tion and get a quick succession of short days and nights of some six hours' duration , but he could regulate the length by the speed of his ma chine. Suppose he traveled from Lon don one night at 10 o'clock westward at a speed of 1,000 miles per hour. He would soon experience the sensation of seeing the sun rising in the west where it had set a short time before.
