Some of the young people of this vicinity went to Box Elder the Fourth. The harvesting season is progressing and there will he some good wheat inSouth Side ; especially on Morlan's ranch. There were several small picnics in the groves of South Side on the Fourth , and no small number escaped the showers of wet rain. rain.W. W. S. Fitch thinks the birds that come into the grove for fruit are paying for it well by killing grasshoppers. He thinks there area great many less 'hoppers on his farm than there were a w.eek ago. A great many people of this place and else where attended the trial of "The Boys , " and came home laughing ; and the boys laughed loudest of all. They think their , 'ij time will come later on. I Most of our young people went to Spring Creek , where they report a fine time. John White , Dan Wildman , Matt Stewart and Ike Atkinson were fishing , last week , throwing out about 75 pounds of fish with their hands. ! We were surprised by a fine shower Tues day eve , ths third , wetting Jdown about one inch ; south of Box Elder it hailed some ; at S. C. Kings' to such an extent as to damage the fruit in their orchard. Following the after noon of the fourth , frequent showers made the corn prospect much brighter , and feed a sure thing , which was a big question with our stockmen. The fourth at Box Elder was celebrated with a nice picnic , and a fine address'by Rev. ! Badcon. The frequent showers in the after noon rather dampened the sport. The crowd was small on account of so many picnics in the neighborhood and the celebration being planned so late.Qlt is to be hoped that if we decide to [ celebrate , next year , the people of Box Elder will all join and help make it a success. The German bark ZIon , which ar rived at this port Sunday from Fowey , England , brought a rather peculiar cargo. It consisted of 1,800 casks of ahina clay , but In addition there were on hoard 300 casks of arsenic. This part of the cargo had a remarkable ef fect on the crew. The fact that arsenic as well as strychnine helps the forma- .ion of adipose tissue when taken into he human system In minute particles Is well known , and both drugs have jecome favorite tonics for convales cents. On board the Zion the men < lept near the large array of barrels "ontaining the drug. They were stor- 'd in the hold , near the forecastle and artially exposed to the rays of the mn , which streamed In through the open hatch. When only about a week out from port one of the crew men tioned to his messmates that a peculiar and indescribable odor was coming from the casks containing the drug. It was not long after their attention had been called to it that they noticed the same thing , and , strange to say , noticed it all the more forcibly a week later. Several of the German tars ue- came aware of the fact that they were filling out their clothes to a much greater extent than when they shipped. Many others , as days went by , became abnormally stout , in vast contrast to the former slim appearance which many of them presented before the land was left. One man gained , it is said , twenty-five pounds. Others were affected to a less extent. But the ag gregate weight put on by the entire crew was little less than 400 pounds. Several of the sailors are known here , and they are said to be scarcely rec ognizable when contrasted with the old days. The entire sudden taking on of avoirdupois is attributed to vapor , which , generated by the action of the sun on the casks , was inhaled by the seamen as they slept , and acted in precisely the same manner as a tonic in a prescription. Capt. Hammes , wbo slept aft in the vessel , entirely removed from the arsenic , doss not show any effect of the inhalition. Philadelphia Times. SWIFT MESSENGER BOYS. Use of the Bicycle Has Adilecl to Their Speed. "The bicycle has proved a valuable assistant in many phases of business , " remarked a wheeling enthusiast yes terday , "but I think that to the mes senger boy it has become a priceless boon. Nowadays it is a rarity to see a messenger boy journeying along in any other manner than on the silent steed. And the proficiency attained by 'he majority of these youngsters in the art of riding would rouse a feeling of envy in the breast of many a professional - ' sional trick rider. It is no unusual j J sight to see as many as three of the boys on one bike. Then , again , you'll see a youngster gliding along , seated anywhere on the wheel except the sad dle. In fact , the majority of the boys I ! scorn the use of the saddle at all. When in a hurry these peaceful rough riders catch hold of a trolley car dasher , and with feet on the handle bars sail down the street , oblivious of the fact that a fall may mean instant death. " Philadelphia Record. Checking System Applied to Babies. I In some of the New York depart ment stores babies can be checked like 1 so many umbrellas , while their moth ers pursue the elusive bargain from counter to counter. A small boy is de tailed to stand guard over a certain number of infants. The small boys and the infants have not been asked for an opinion , but the mothers are enthusiastic in their approval. In Brooklyn the checking system as ap plied to babies r-as appeared in a new form. Brooklyn being recognized as the city of churches , the new develop ment is naturally along the ecclesias tical line. The Ry. Dr. Wiley of the Nostrand Avenus > Tuethodist Episcopal church is the originator of the scheme. and the mothers are once more the gainers. A large rocm 'aas been fitted up with hammocks and cribs , peram bulators and toys. Here a volunteer committee of young women assembles every Sunday morning , and here the mothers , v.-ho vould otherwise be kept at home leave their babies , while they themselvts alte- " the regular church service. The plan is a novel one , but promises , and deserves , to be popular. Harper's Bazar. Keep the Boilers Filled. The boilers of fire engines are auto matically filled , in a firehouse by a new device , consisting of a pipe ex tending up from the floor , which has a. self-coupler at the upper end to con nect with the engine and open the % steam valve to draw the water fnto the boiler. A LONG FALL. Never Would IJiive ltiU * vcd It If II * Hutlu'fc Keen It. The man with a bunch of twine for whiskers was shaking his chin at the company of listeners , one of whom had shortly before read from a news paper a story of a man falling down a well and sustaining no very serious injury , says the Washington Star. "Which reminds me , gents , " he said , "that what I am about to relate to you is a fact , a calm , cold fact , that I wouldn't think of telling you if it was anything else. It happened out in one of the deep mines of Colorado , where there was a straight shaft 850 feet deep. Some said it was 875 , but , gents , I'm a truthful man , and 1 know it was 25 feet 1 inch short of that , for I measured it myself. Weil , to make a long story short , one day theft was a man out to see the mine from New York to buy it. He had a pot of money , and he looked like he carried it around under his vest , for he was as big through as a bass drum and built on them proportions. I guess he weighed 300 pounds , though it might have been only 298. Anyhow , he was standing around the mouth of the shaft one morning , and by some chance or other he toppled over and down he went. I was looking right at him when he toppled , and I never want to see another man's face look like his did then , gents , indeed I don't. Not much. Well , to make a long story short , we looked at each other for a minute as he went down the hole , and then we broke for the cage , which was fastened up yet , and two of us started down after him , expecting to find him a mangled mass at the bet tom. But we didn't , and as we began to near the bottom we heard him yelling like a coyote to hold up or we'd mash the life out of him. That scared us worse than the other , and we want ed to go back , but we couldn't do that , so we went slow and got down to him all right. Well , to make a long story short , by gum , do you know that we found that he had gone down that hole so fast and he had filled it so full that he had compressed the air in it to such an extent that by the time he got pretty near to the bottom he wasn't moving faster than he would have moved through that much water , and he had really stopped ten or fifteen feet from the bottom and couldn't get either way , which was what scared him so as we came down on him in the cage. Very peculiar occurrence , gents , and if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I never would have believed' if in the world. Never. " CHINESE BLACKMASLINC. Hevy : Exactions on a Kullroi < l Ofli'il.il at Peklnc : * , A curious instance , and by no means a , flattering one , of Chinese methods 3f government has just been supplied by the arrival of Sheng Taotai from Shanghai , says a Pekin dispatch to the 3t. James Gazette. This gentleman holds several important posts , and imong others has the appointment of director of railways. He is also the idministrator of the Chinese tele graphs and has an excellent reputa tion among foreigners for his toler ance and open-mindedness. Recently fie was called here by command of the emperor to confer about the sev- jral reforms which his majssty was o eager to adopt. The chief officials ) f Pekin hailed his advent with de light , as it at last gave tbmn the op portunity of a "squeeze , " which hac1 jeen quite impossible while Slieng was so far distant from Shanghai. The modus operandi is quite a usual and in every-day one and deserves notice rhe gates of Pekin are farmed out to ligh officials , chiefly princes of royal I ( ilood. All merchandise is examined * md is passed on payment of a small : ax. But when an official like Sheng i jomes in , from whom they are desir- 3us of exacting a good round sum , : he procedure is altered. In this par- icular case Sheng was given to un- lerstand that contraband articles would be found in his luggage unless lie satisfied the farmers of the gate. ! believe I am correct in saying that 3heng did not even attempt to dispute ) r haggle , but resignedly asked what imount was required. The answer ivas 30,000 taels. This was paid or : aromised , and Sheng proceeded on his lourney , probably glad at having got ) ff so cheaply. But against all prece- lent and custom , he was stopped at : he inner gate , and did not get off un- ler 20,000 taels. So altogether this infortunate official , called to the capi- ; al by the emperor's order , had to pay ) ver $6,350 before he was allowed to jo to his duties. The Boston Girl.
