A Picture That will Become Famous.
Theobald Chartran has returned to
this country from Paris , bringing with
him a large historical painting which
probably will be hung in the capitol
at Washington. It was ordered by
Henry C. Frick , of Pittsburg , before
Mr. Chartran left this country , last
spring. The artist went to Washing
ton and studied the character and
faces of the men who figure in the
group. President McKinley , William
R. Day , secretary of state at that time ;
M. Cambon , the French ambassador ;
M. Thebaut , his secretary , and Messrs.
Moore , Adee and Cridler , of the state
department , will be seen in a group
which represents the signing of tne
Spanish-American peace protocol at
Washington. If the picture is not
hung in the capitol it will be presented
to Mr. McKinley. France paid $20,000
for a painting which is to be exhibited
by M. Chartran at the Paris exposi

WHAT "KAtSOMINES" ARE.
ICalsomlnes are cheap and temporary
preparations , manufactured from whit
ing , chalks , clays , etc. They are stuck on
the walls -nith decaying animal glue. Ala
bastlne is not a kalsomlne. It is a rock-
base cement , which sets , and it hardens
with age. It can be re-coated and re
decorated without having to wash and
scrape off its old coats. Alabastlne Is
utilized to a great extent in hospitals , as
It prevents the accumulation of dirt and
the congregating of disease germs , being
disinfectant in its nature.
CHURCHES AND SCHOOL-HOUSES.
The interior walls of churches , schoolhouses -
houses and all public halls should never
be coated with anything but the durable
and pure Alabastine. So evident has this
fact become , that hundreds of tons are
used annually for this work. The genu

It is cleanly during the Ions period of its
usefulness. Every owner of a building
should use it. Ask your paint dealer or

THE PLACE FOR A POOR MAN.
A Homestead Clear and Money Ahead
In Tivo Years.
Alamedn , N. W. T. , Canada.
Dec. 22 , 1899.
Mr. B. Davics , Canadian Govern
ment Agent , St. Paul , Minn. Dear Sir :
As I promised you about two yean
ago that at some future time I would
let you know what I thought of west
ern Canada nud the chances of a poor
man making a start and supporting a
family at the same time , so will write
a few facts concerning my own ex
perience the past twenty-one mouths ;
and what I have done , any able-bodied
man can do , provided he will work.
I left Traverse country March 20 ,
1898 ; landed In Alameda at noon the
21st with $3.55 in my pocket , a strang
er and among strangers , and when my
family came In October. 1898 , my
wife had nearly § 10 , or barely enough
to pay freight on her stove , sewing-
machine and clothes and beds. I com
menced work March 28 ; also made en
try for homestead same day ( the man
I started work for loaning me $15 to
pay entrance fee ) , and I have earned
or at least received ? 178.10 in wages
since then and have been idle at least
two months of the twenty-one since I
came. The homestead I took had
twelve acres broke by a former occu
pant. I paid $20 to have it rcplowed
in July , ' 98 , and the seed wheat for it
cost me $8.23. I let it to a neighbor
for one-half in elevator , clear of all
expense except the seed , and this fall
I received $70.10 for my part of ths
crops off the twelve acres , so my total
receipts the past twenty-one months
have been $548 10 , and my expenses ,
besides living for self and family , have
been as follows :
Entrance fee ( $3 being paid for
cancellation ) $ 15.00
Summer fallowing 12 acres 20.00
Seed for same 8.25
Cost of house , besides my own
labor on same 75.85
20 acres of breaking and double-
discing same CO.OO
? 17D.10
My half of wheat 70.10
Net expense on homestead.$109.00
We moved on our homestead July
10 , 1S99 , have thirty-two acres in good
shape for crops in 1900. My wife joins
with me in sending best wishes to you
and yours.
You can truly say to any poor man
who pays a big rent to get a farm
( pomebody else's land ) or works for
wages to support a family , that I have
personally tried both in Minnesota
and tried hard to make a success of it ,
but found to my sorrow that after
working harj a poor living was all I
could get out of it , and after nearly
two years of western Canadian life I
will say that I am very thankful to
you for helping me to decide to try it
in Canada. Yours respectfully ,
W. H. KINKADE.

MONWEAL.

A notable change lias come over
3en. Jacob S. Coxcy of commonweal
fame. From the day that he was or-
ilercd off the grass at the national
capital he became a new man. He
turned his attention from politics to
finance , and is now making money at
the rate of four figures a day. He is
operating a stone quarry five miles
from Massillon , Ohio , which is as prof
itable as a small gold mine. Setting
up as a large employer of unskilled la
bor , Gen. Coxey has had a chance to
demonstrate the practicability of his
commonweal theories. His son. Jesse
Coxey , a stalwart young fellow , has
also figured extensively in the solution
of the great ' hobo problem. "
It is the policy of Coxey not to turn
away any man who wants work. There
is a steady run of men who come and
go from the quarry property. At pres
ent there are fifty omployes at the
plant , and among the.sc are only twj
of the "hoboes" of the original com
monweal aimy , but theie are plenty
of recruits from the entls of the earth.
The story of Coxey's quarry has been
circulated among tramps all ov ° r thr
country. They are sure of a welcome
a day's rations , and a chance to le.ivc
when work becomes too onerous. "D
ole man's easy , but keep yer eyei
peeled fer Jesse , " is the word Kite y
passed around. Some time ago three
stout tramps arrived on Saturday
evening late and applied for work.
They were so hungry , they said , they
didn't know where to stay all night.
"You know me ; my name's Coxey ,
Gen. Coxey of the commonweal army , "
said the old man , heartily. "Make
yourselves at home , eat all you want ,
and do a day's work Monday. "
So on Saturday night and all day
Sunday the tramps feasted and rested
from their roadside wanderings. Mon
day morning , after a phenomenal
breakfast , they tool : the highway
promptly in a direction opposite to the
general's quarry. This was the last
straw. The thing had happened so
often that young Jesse Coxey took
matters in his own hands , common
weal or no commonweal. He struck
the trail , and , single-handed , started
in pursuit. Four miles away he c.imc
upon the three commonwealers resting
on the ties of a railroad track.
"Walk , " said Jesse Coxey , briefly , as
he leveled a gun on the trio. He
marched them back to the quarry and
compelled them to do a day's work for
their Sunday lodgings , when they
were allowed to depart in peace.
Coxey claims a part in making the
good armor of American ships. He
says he furnishes sand for the big ar
mor-plate plants of the land , and adds
that his has been found to be the best.
So the "general" has taken credit unto
himself for recent American naval vic
tories , and announces in flaming col
ors on posters pasted on the cars that
American naval supremacy Is due to
Coxey's good sand. The "general" has
found there are dollars in tiie sand ,
and he is not anything if he is not a
good advertiser of his wares. His com
monweal fame attracts the public to
him wherever he goes. He does no es
pecially court conversation on the
march he made for the lost cause ,
neither does he shrink when the mat
ter is brought before him. At pres
ent he evidently doer not care to risk
any more army trip ? , even for the sake
of the principles which he has long ad
vocated. He is too busy. His wealth
is piling up in conical form like a little
pile of sand from his crushers. Besides
the quarry he owns lead mines in Mis
souri and is preparing to put up a
steel plant soon.
But Coxey has with him relics of his
political canvass. On the switch near
his profitable quarry stand four
coaches. The one , a Pullman palace
car , is used by Jesse Coxey , wife , and
little daughter , as a dwelling place. A
second car is used as kitchen and
store-room for workmen at the quarry.
The dining room is in a third car , the
one used by Coxey in his political tour
over the United States. The sides of
the car are decorated with attractive
printing , telling of the principles ad
vocated by Coxey on non-interest-
bearing bonds , good roads and other
questions. But the interior of the car
has been changed.
A long table of plain boards in in
the center of the coach. This is to
seat the hungry men as they come to
their meals. Tin cups and plates are
always spread ready for meal time.
There is little style when the hoboes
and other workmen eat , but they seem
withal to be a happy set and fairly
well contented with their lot. This
non-interesting-bearing car is also
used as a sleeper. Every man has his
bunk. There are lower and upper
berths , plain , but warm , and , no doubt ,
comfortable to the man who has
swung a big sledge for 8 hours in
crushing stone. The clothing on these
beds is of plain grade , but the beds are
kept in cleanly condition , and the men
express themselves satisfied with their
sleeping quarters. Coxey's home , at
present , is near the quarry. He has
a combination frame and log dwelling
house.
