Stratton , this week , while additional de
positions have been taken in the famous
McGillen land and cattle case , from
Hitchcock county , which has been run
ning the gamut of the courts , high and
low , for years.

A Furnas County Instance.
Andrew Majewski came to Furnas
county twenty two years ago from Seward -
ard count3' . We did not inquire how
much money he brought with him , but
presume not much. He now owns eleven
quarters of land , much of the level land
being under cultivation. ( Mr. Graham
closed a deal with Mr. Majewski for two
of the eleven quarters during our stay
for dinner. ) He handed us an opera
glass to view his cattle in the distant
stalk fields. The yards were full of fat
porkers and an air of German thrift per
vaded the place. The house , a three
story brick , was supplied with water
faucets fed from a cistern on a hill at the
rear of the house Stockville Faber.

Navy John D. Long was elected president.

The glad intelligence has just reached us
that the scientific temperance instruction bill
passed both houses of the Virginia legislature
unanimoulsy on January i6th. Great credit is
due to the state superintendent of scientific
temperance instruction and all who so success
fully helped to bring about this great victory.

There are 250,000 places where liquor is sold
in this country. "The Saloon Grave Yard"
100,000 are buried annually by the saloonist.

The average savings deposits for each citi
zen of Iljinois is 56.14 ; of Ohio $9.42 ; and of
the prohibition state , Maine $80.77.

Ten thousand people starve to death each
year in greater New York , while nearly $400-
ooo a day passes over the saloon bars of that
city for liquors.

The temperance people will watch with in
terest the doings of the Royal Welch Fusileers
during the present Transvaal campaign , for
five hundred men of the battalion are stauch
teetotalers.

Dr. S. G. Howe traced the parentage of
three hundred idiots , and reported to the
Massachusetts legislature , that of three hun
dred , one hundred and forty-seven were found
to be the children of drunkards. In one in
stance seven idiotic children were the off
spring of a drunken father and mother.

I. T. Birdsell and wife of Frontier county ,
having leased their home to A. Myers , are

The Valley Social club will meet at the
home of Frank Freelove , next Friday evening ,
to initiate charter members.
The revival meetings at the school-house in
district 31 closed , last Sunday evening , appar
ent results not .being satisfactory.
Clarence Whittaker came down from , im
perial , last week , to visit home and friends ,
returning Tuesday morning. The evening
previous , a number of the boys from the city
surprised him by walking in about 9 o'clock.

taker , vice ; John Burtless , treasurer ; Minnie
