PRKSIDKNT ARTHUR T HADLEY of Yale univeisity still insists that his rem edy for the trust evil "social ostracism" is a winner. The doctor is evidently foregctful of the well known fact that the average trust magnate is in a position to be somewhat "exclusive" himself. SHNATOR BEVEKIDGK'S magnificent speecli given in full in a supplement to THE TRIBUNE , this issue , should be given a careful reading by all. It is a fair and full nnd free statement of conditions and facts seen and determined by the eloquent senator from Indiana himself. COLONEL MITCHELL uses the Repub lican supplements erroneously sent him from stale or national source and then with characteristic guilelessness inno cently asks , "What does it breathe of justice , self-government or consent of the governed ? " More , evidently , my dear colonel , than can find entrance or lodgment in your steel-tipped dome of thought. THE session of the Nebraska Press as sociation in Lincoln , this week , was one of the most largely attended in the his tory of the association , and it is hut proper to say that it was one of the most profitable and enjoyably entertaining meetings ever held by the men behind the faber. No little business of special interest was dispatched , and the enter tainment features the gift of the people of Lincoln were up to the high mark of previous years ; in fact , nowhere are the boys of the "Fourth Estate" better treated than in Lincoln. D. H. Cronin of the O'Neill Frontier will grace the presidential chair. next year , with F. N. Merwin of the Beaver City Tribune still at the secretary-treasurer's desk. The meeting place will be Omaha. There is only one source of regret , namely , that more of the publishers do not attend the sessions , which have been a fountain of much business and fraternal profit to those who have attended and partici pated in the regular annual meetings of the association. The large and increasing circulation of The Iowa Homestead in this county is a matter for congratulation to the pub lishers and to good farming , for , of all the papers of its class in the country , it is easily the best and most helpful. Its Special Farmers' Institute editions , is sued with the regular edition the first week in each month , have been for years the admiration of all practical farmers. "Written wholly by farmers , they are full Of actual experience and smell of the soil. We have been fortqnate enough Mils season to secure terms for The Homestead and its Special Farmers' In stitute editions , together with The Poul try Farmer and The Farmers' Mutual Insurance Journal , four of the most val uable farm publications in the country , that enable us to offer the four in con nection with our own paper for $1.25 for the entire five , one year. This is em phatically a good thing , and no farmer in this county should fail to take advant age of the offer. Ed Ueglitel is building a feed mill just north of Ogg's grocery , and will put in a steam grinding outfit as soon as the building is ready. Building is having quite a little boom in the burglet at present. Among the structures now under way may be noted the M. E. church ( brick ) , Beghtel's feed mill , residences by W. E. Rollings and Mrs. E. A. Wilson , and an addition to S. Grisell's house. The Junior Epworthians gave a Blue Jay Jubilee , Monday evening , with encouraging success. The Juniors have undertaken to pay for the floor in the basement of the new church , and are starting with commendable enterprise to fulfill their contract. The tears-in-the-throat and - - - lump-in-the- eyes tone in which Cecil speaks of taxes "squeezed from the farmers by distress war rants" convinces us that farmers oughtn't to pay taxes anyway. Let's all vole to saddle the taxes on those rich fellows in McCook. The roar which was made about the county officials , the payment of salaries to deputies , etcetera , by the local paper , last week , occas ioned some wonderment among the unso phisticated , but to those on the ground floor the solution was easy. The foundation lies in the fact that for many moons the editor has considered himself entitled to the salary at tached to some public position and is beset by a yearning to serve his country in an official capacity. The way Berge and Green over looked him in selecting their deputies two years ago was an offense unpardonable , but lust previous to the last election he renewed his courage and gave it out cold and flat that he would be deputy county clerk in the event of Green's reelection. The day after election he drew up the form for a petition asking that Green appoint him deputy clerk and got at least one signature. Bennett wasn't elected he was to be Bennett's deputy , too or perhaps there would have been no occasion for the "holler" about the demands on the county's surplus and the payment of big fat salaries to deputies.
