Death of Vice President Hobart.
The announcement of the death ol
Garret A. Hobart , vice president of the
United States , is a cause of profound re
gret and sorrow to the people of this
country. Although never a prominent
figure in the councils of the nation , Gar
ret A. Hobart has for many years been
a potential factor in shaping its policies.
As a member of the republican national
committee , he was active in organizing
victory for his party and in mapping
out the work for its campaign managers.
Since his advent to the vice presidency
Mr. Hobart has exhibited admirable
traits in the discharge of his official
functions and what is most creditable
became one of the trusted advisers ol
President McKiuley upon the grave
problems with which the administration
has been confronted. In this respect
Mr.'Hobart's relations to the chief ex
ecutive were exceptional ns few previous
vice presidents had ever risen above the
mere figurehead on the prow of the ship
of state.
Personally the late vice president was
a genial gentleman , approachable at all
times to all classes. Above all things he
was a level-headed man of business with
a quick grasp of conditions and a deep
insight into human character. This
quality doubtless was what made his
views on public men and measures
sought after by those charged with
greater responsibilities and authority.
Omaha Bee.
SENATOR JOHN M. THURSTON and
Miss Lida Purinan of Washington , D. C. ,
were married in the national capital ,
last Saturday morning , with modest par
ticulars. The senator , his bride and
party at once started south in a Union
Pacific private car on a short wedding
tour , and expect to be in Omaha by
Thanksgiving. Congratulations.
responsibility borne of duty
cannot be evaded with honor. We are
in the Philippines ; our flag is there.
The first requirement the indispensible
requirement is peace. No terms until
the undisputed authority shall be ac
knowledged in every foot of territory of
the archipelago. After that , then Con
gress will make a government under
the sovereignty of the United States. "
President McKinley at Milwaukee.
THE newspapers are complacently
iterating and reiterating the ' 'scare
head" statement that "Admiral Dewey
has taken a wife. " Well , if that were
among the possible accomplishments of
any "lord of creation , " the "hero of
Manila bay" ought to be able to perform
the feat ; but we will wager "dollars to
doughnuts" that the admiral capitulated
and was "was taken , " this time , if he
never surrendered before in his heroic
career.
AMERICAN capital is being rapidly in
vested in the islands which have of late
come under the control of the United
States government. The business men
of the country realize that we have to
send abroad $250,000,000 a year for trop-
sical products , and think they might as
L get their share of the profits from
the\production of these articles , every
dollans worth of which can be grown in
Cuba , POfto Rico , Hawaii , and the Phil
ippines , aud thus keep this vast sum o
money withvn our own borders insteac
of distributing it to the outside worlc
every year.
"THE time is rapidly approaching ,
says Hon. John Barr\tt , President Cleve-
lands minister to Sram , "when Japan ,
China , Korea , Siam , and the Philippines
will consume every pourd of the South's
surplus cotton , manufactured or raw ,
and make her absolutely independent
of the British or European market.
Every farmer , laborer , and manufacturer
in the South should have deep concern
in Ameiica's Asiatic opportunity. There
should not be a discordant note from
the Roauoke to the Rio Grande in sup
port of a policy to extend , protect , and
control the markets of the Orient.

The official vote of the Fourteeutl
Judicial district has become known , am

the facts already made public in thi
connection through the medium of TIN

Here they aie :

This victory becomes more luminous
when compared with the heads of the
opposing ticket. Judge Holcomb , the
Fusion candidate , carried every one ol
the eight counties , his total plurality
being officially 603.
SINCE the late election , there are more
people in Red Willow county than pre
vious to that event , who are not surprised
that Judas sold his Lord and Master foi
thirty pieces of free and unlimited.
PEOPLE who are losing sleep over the
frequently repeated suggestions thai
England's experiences in India prove
that a large standing army will be re
quired in the Philippines should divide
the standing army of India into the pop
ulation and then see how it fits condi
tions in the Philippines. The standing
army in India consists of 225,000 men ,
of which one-third are Europeans and
two-thirds natives. The population ol
India is 300,000,000 ; that of the Philip
pines , 8,000,000. Make the calculation
and j'ou will find that at the'same ratic
we should have to keep in the Philip
pines 2,000 of American and 4,000 ol
native troops.
Election day has passed away ,
And Willie's won the tin ;
Some politicians smoked cigars ,
Some drank a little gin ;
Our customers drank water
And claimed 'twas rather thin ,
But the tender , juicy meat we sell
Caused them to loudly grin.
So everybody , great and small ,
Come in and see out goods this fall ;
Tho' we may fail , we'll surely try
To merit confidence while you buy ,
For all our goods will stand the test ,
Game , beef , pork , mutton and the rest ;
And the poultry is the very best

The Primary Teacher.
A young teacher said to me , the other day ,
"I wish you would open a school for primary
teachers. I feel every day that I know less
and less. " That is a hopeful sign ; as she will
then employ every means at hei command to
remedy her defects ; and.as it is not practicable
to open such a school , I wonder if I could
embody a few practical hints in a series of
short articles that might open the way to mu
tual inquiry and thought , leading to advance
ment. Under the term primary teacher , I
include teachers up to the Sixth grade ; and
they hold the most important positions in the
ranks of educators. As the foundation of a
house must be strong and perfect , or the whole
structure is poor , so must the foundation of an
education be strong and perfect , or all the
wealth of the world spent upon the super
structure can never make it more than a gild
ed bauble. The beginning of the teacher's
preparation , after she secures her certificate ,
is with the child : She must learn something
of child nature before she can put into prac
tice the development of that immortal mind.
What would we think of the physician who
had spent many years learning all about drugs
and had not learned the physiology of the
body and the effects of drugs upon it ? The
young teacher has usually made just such a
foolish blunder. She has learned something
about what should be put into the mind , but
what does she know of the mind itself ? Imi
tation is the first characteristic of the young
mind , and upon this we must commence to
build. Do not depend at all upon the reason
ing powers of the young child ; he does not
reason. He may be curious , and ask you why
for this and that , but this simply shows that
he has come to you with his eyes opening
wider every day to the wonderful things , so
new to him , so old to you , and you may find it
hard to get up any enthusiasm over the simple
task of adding to his vocabularly one new
word ; but , if you would succeed , you must do
it. I would not have you follow any iron-clad
rules as to your manner of presenting new
things to him , but you must make it interest
ing , and get his attention. As soon as tha :
flag's , change the work , or pass to recreation
Within the first day you should be able to
gain his attention and interest , and then you
can begin your work in earnest. Keeping in
mind that faculty of imitation which alone is
solely his at first , you must give him nothing
but the good and true. Curiosity will soon be
aroused , and this will show that you have
gained attention. He will want to know wha
comes next , and why. Then he will want to
do the things he sees you or his companion
do. Now comes your greatest task ; after he
has learned to do , to keep him constantly do
ing until he can do well the task assigned
One of my first lessons in primary training
was , never to weary of repeating the same
thing over and over , always keeping in mind
the importance of putting it in new ways. For
instance , in teaching words that have no per
ceptible meaning by themselves , auxiliary
verbs "have" etc. , they must simply be im
pressed on the mind through their use in sent
ences , and may have to be told again and
again. Imagination is also an important fac
tor in mind culture. The child who has it
well developed will learn more rapidly than
the one who has not ; but it may be stimulated
in the one who has it not , and checked in the
one who has it over developed. Many par
ents and teachers object to its cultivation ,
arguing that most children have already too
much of it , as exhibited in their plays. It
: ertainly should not run riot and commit ex
travagances , which lead to falsehood. It
nust be guided and directed. Can you not
remember the time when you could imagine
yourself in China , picturing all the quaint cos-
umes and tea-gardens simply from some story
old you or a geography lesson ? It is this
acuity of imagination which allows us to
: omprehend things we have never seen. Too
iteral a mind will often think , as I once did ,
hat Iowa was red , soil , trees , and everything ,
jecause it was colored red on the atlas. A
ittle girl four years old stood at the window
luring a thunder-storm. She was not afraid ,
> ut was intensely interested in trying to find
mt what caused the thunder and lightning.
Vt last a solution of the mystery came to her
md soon we heard her explaining to a little
daymate that God was driving out in his
hariot. The thunder was the rumble of the
hariot over the great heavenly mountains
nd the lightning was the lights turned on by
he angels to show the road. To what heights
f knowledge of science and nature might not
uch a mind be led , unless spoiled by narrow ,
uperstitious teaching : and this same trait of
imagination is the foundation for such perfec
tion. In Germany a large part of the great
literature is taught the youth in his first school
years. Poems from the best German writers ,
that teach patriotism , humanity and obedi
ence , are committed to memory. The greatest
prose selections are read again and again ,
until the purity of the language and the wis
dom of the thought become a part of the mind
itself. This method is also prevalent in our
own bestschoolsand has become a great factor
in ethical training , from the first grade up
wards. Imitation and imagination , then , I
consider the two qualities of mind which the
teacher has to build upon when the child
starts to school ; later other factors may be
considered. MRS. M. J. CORDEAL.
