THE "BEE HIVE , " - McCook , Neb. THE ORLEANS-ST. FRANCIS BRANCI Orleans , Neb. , April 5. Special coi respondence. The Orleans-St. Franci branch of the Burlington is "strictly i it" this season. Since the first of th year there has been a snow storm ever week or ten days. The ground is froze to a depth of several feet and full c moisture , virtually insuring * a good get eral crop for the coming season. Last year was a prosperous one. Th branch shipped over 2,000 car-loads c stock and 2,000 car-loads of grain.Vi souville shipped out 442 cars of live stoc and 96 cars in , a total of 538 loads. I this respect it leads any other point o the Burlington -Nebraska , Kansa ; Colorado , South Dakota , Wyoming o Montana. Arapahoe , in the same cour ty ( Furnas ) , is the second station on th Burlington in stock shipments. Hem ; ley and Wilsonville , only eight mile apart , shipped out about 800 cars c stock. If the Beaver valley for the 9 miles had been as well developed i stock resources as in the vicinity of Wil sonville and Hendley and the acreage c alfalfa in the upper valley were as large the shipments of stock could easily read 5,000 car-loads annually. Thousands c acres in Rawlins and Decatur countie : Kansas , along the Beaver , could be sow ; in alfalfa. Experts of national repute tion advance the opinion that no soil i : the United States is better adapted t the cultivation of alfalfa than the Beave valley. No matter how cheap the lam may be in its wild state , as soon as al falfa is well rooted and a good stand se cured it is worth $75 per acre. Alfalfa sold this winter at from $3 t $4 a ton. Three tons per acre is a com niou yield and oftimes four , and three t four crops per season are harvested. Al falfa land is invaluable and is not on th market. Golden opportunities await th enterprising settlers who will buy th thousands of acres of alfalfa land. Whe ; the Beaver valley is thoroughly devel oped , it will be the most famous alfalf belt in the world. _ Farmers in Rawlins county. Kansas have made fortunes raising wheat dut ing the last two seasons. Messrs. Dunk ard and Walruss , north of Ludell , raisei 7,000 to 8,000 bushels of wheat in 189 and sold it for $ t or more per bushel. Ii 1898 they raised as many bushels , bu the price was lower. Twenty to thirt bushels per acre during the last two sea sons has been a common yield for win ter wheat. One field near Herndoi yielded 46 bushels per acre , last yeai In all the east or west , where is the lam that will realize so large a profit fron the investment ? For instance , lam worth $5 per acre producing $25 wort ! of wheat is a common thing in Rawlin county. It is a mystery why easteri people will pay big rent , when the ren money and other expenses could star them on to prosperity in the wheat stock and alfalfa belt in Rawlins county M. T. Banta , Burlington route imini gration agent , of Charitan , Iowa , has lo cated seventeen families in Rawlin county. He has charge of the Burling ton lands in Southwestern Nebraska am Northwestern Kansas and is thorough ! posted. Any one contemplating locatin ; in this section should write him. Settlers are locating rapidly in th territory adjacent to the Beaver vallej Car-load after car-load of immigrant are coming. Buildings are springing up corn cribs overflowing with the the kin ; of grains can be seen at every station Twelve to fifteen train-loads of cattle ar being shipped to Atwood to feed , am this place is destined to become anothe Wilsouville as a stock-shipping point. Wheat land around Atwood has gou up to a premium. The sure cinch for spring wheat crop creates a strife to s cure rentals of vacant , cultivated lands The acreage will far surpass that of an previous year. Orleans is having quite a boom. Fou business buildings will be built ther this season. Orleans has the most bean tiful and costly church between Denve and St. Joseph. For architectural desigi and artistic finish it would be au oriia ment to any city. The Burlington ha had a gang of carpenters repairing thi depot and platforms at this point. Pros pects for the coming season are very ros1 for the Orleans and Atwood country. H.C.F. ANNUAL ESTIMATE. Estimate of expenses of Red Willow count' for the year 1899.
