\Vlld Kosh of Diamond
A wild rush of miners Is reported at
Nullaglne , Australia , where diamonds
have been discovered , and It Is feared
that many will lose their lives In the
struggle. In this country the rush for
gain causing men to break down in
health. Nervousness and general de
bility are the symptoms which Hostet-
ter's Stomach Bitters will cure.
President McKinley's signature is ,
next to that of John Adams and Tyler ,
the plainest of any of our chief exe-
cutices. Van Buren's was the hardest
to decipher , though Jefferson , Taylor ,
Hayes. Benjamin Harrison and Gar-
Held n'ever lifted their pen in signing
their names. J. Q. Adams' is small ,
cramped and the only "back hand" in
the lot. Folk's is the most ornate ;
Jackson's the longest , four inches , and
Pierce's the largest.

Petroleum as nn Intoxicant Bids
Fair to Hupersedo the Green Devil
In work of Degenerating a Nation
Sad State of Affalra EiUts. ! '
Petrolism is the new vice that
threatens the brains , the strength and
the purses of Parisians and French
men , or , rather , it is the old vice , al
coholism , in a new and startling form ,
says the London Telegraph. Have we
not heard of morphomania and even of
the woebegone idiots who drink eau
do cologne when they can get noth
ing more fiery ? But petrolism is , in
truth , a grim novelty almost without
parallel. Nobody can say for certain
what its origin was or what its future
will be , but the competent authorities
are painfully aware that the terrible
habit has made considerable progress
In Paris already. The excise and cus
toms duties on alcohol of all kinds
were lately raised , whereby it was
rendered more difficult for the intem
perate man to indulge repeatedly in his
little glass. But this increase in the
price does not explain the phenome
non , because the duties were raised a
few days ago , whereas petrolism has ,
it seems , been going on for a consid
erable time. For one of the urban dis
tricts in the neighborhood of the bas
tille contains a respectable number of
"petroliques , " as the physicians term
them , and in the outskirts of Paris
many more ill-starred people are ad
dicted to it. The taste for this disa
greeable beverage grows upon the con
sumer , it is said , until it develops into
an irresistible passion. The doctors
have not yet had opportunities to
study its effects , and their views , lack
ing a firm basis , are divergent. The
consensus of opinion , however , main
tains that the intoxication produced by
petroleum is of a melancholy nature ,
which tinges things in gray. The pe
troleum drinker is sad , discontented ,
despairing. Unlike whisky , the miner
al oil never bestows "Dutch courage"
upon the quaffer , who is rarely quar
relsome or pugnacious. Moreover , his
sleep at night would not seem to be
very injuriously affected by it. Gen
erally speaking , the "petroliques"
sleep calmly enough , and even their
general health is not as rapidly under
mined as by the alcoholic beverages in
common demand. Here , however , opin
ions differ. Some doctors hold that
the gravest organic changes are caused
by the use , which is also an abuse , of
petroleum , and that the germs of mor
tal diseases are called into being. The
manner in which the latest batch of
"petroliques" was discovered is curi
ous. A firm in the city furnished pe
troleum to certain retail shops. The
head of one of the latter complained
o short measure. The wholesale
merchant denied the charge and
proved that he was right. Then the
retail dealer set himself to discover the
clew to the mystery , but for a long
time in vain. None of the liquid was
removed from the premises or spilled ,
and yet it continued to disappear. At
last it was discovered that the work
men drank it to raise their laboring-
lower to the proper level.
DOCTOR'S ADVICE ON SHOES
Many Women Idlolic Enough to Wear
Ties In "Winter.
The majority of women , those inter
ested in athletic sports , those advocat
ing dress reform and the many who
are simply sensible without being fad
dish , have adopted the new style of
walking shoes copied so closely after
those fashionable for men , says the
New York Herald. Yet , for all that ,
there are women who insist upon being
dainty , lace-betrimmed and thinly
shod in the street , who still wear , and
will doubtless always wear , paper
soles , low-cut patent leathers and thin
lisle stockings , even in winter. A
prominent physician speaking on the
subject , said to me only the other day :
"A woman came to me one windy day
last week complaining of a terrible
pain in her lungs. As she sat telling
me her ills I happened to glance at her
feet. They were crossed , and just dis
played the prettiest , daintiest , patent-
leather oxford tie , and a soupcon of a
lace-patterned silk stocking. In a
boudoir she would have been irresisti
ble ; in my office and in the street she
was a suicide. 'But , doctor ! ' she ex
claimed in reply to my expostulation
as to the enormity of her crime against
health in being so shod , 'I cannot wear
those awful men's shoes and I wear
ties in the evening all winter to the
theaters and places of amusement. '
'Then , my dear lady , ' I replied , 'you
are only wasting your money in com
ing to me for advice , for I can never
cure you while you dress like that. ' "
Many women would save themselves
much money , suffering and nauseous
doses of medicine if they would only
take the doctor's words to heart.
