"Call a boy hard names when he is young , and he will live up to them when he grows up , " or words to that effect , I once heard an old man say. This was recalled to mind several times a few weeks ago when different ones informed me that McCook had some pretty tough boys. It was at the chicken show. I got to studying about those boys. There was a dozen of bright boys at that exhi bition , all very much interested and somewhat noisy as boys have ever been. There were ever so many to whom I should like to extend thanks for pretty little courteous favors , but I noticed that very little attention was shown these boys other than to see that they did not meddle. I felt like censuring some of the men that they so soon forgot the time when they were boys. But perhaps the men were right ; they have had a chance to know the boys better than I do. The men were quieter than the boys , but they spat mere tobacco juice. Perhaps the men were real nice boys. It will only be a few years until the boys will be men and will vote for mayor , and it would he good policy for future aspirants for that office to make friends with them now. If the boys are chummy with the real nice men , it is quite likeiy they will emulate them in many ways. There are boys who find the greatest enjoyment in women's society. I did not see any mothers out with their bo\s , but perhaps the weather was too cold. Boys rarely ever plot mischief when they are visiting women. Now I have been wondering if McCook folks were not so busy they were neglecting to visit with their boys and. especially , giving the ones regarded as "tough" too much free time that ought to be occupied in visit ing the nice men and women of McCook. It seems to me a town boy's social duties ought to be rather arduous. He ought to be invited out so often that he would seldom have time for an evening on the street. Of course , no one believes their very own boy to be "tough. " And , of course , our very own boy is to be trusted any hour of the day or night in any com pany. Still , we nice men and women would probably do just as well if we di ( not grutlge them our society. If one has never cultivated the acquaintance obeys boys all sorts of boys they will have missed rare entertainment. It would be very hard for me to be lieve McCook bo3fs to be anything but the courteous , uianl3' , little fellows they have been with me , overflowing with mischief of course. A BOY LOVER. What Next ? It does seem as though the seedsmen would slop somewhere , but here comes a work of art.
