MR. E. N. ALLEN , of Aropahoe ,
was nominated for state sena
tor by the Republicans at McCook
Friday , August 26. Mr. Allen is
a native of Wisconsin , having been
born in Dane county , that state ,
in 1853. A few years later his
parents moved to Sauk county
where he secured a common school
education and afterward he attend
ed the Baptist Seminary at Evaus-
ville , Wis. , for a time. On Au
gust 4 , 1873 , he arrived in Furuas
county and for a few years was a
student in the State University ,
working in the harvest fields dur
ing vacation to keep up expenses.
He was elected county superintend
ent of schools in 1879 , receiving
eveiy vote in the county. This
office he held for two terms and
during that time organized or re
organized nearly every school dis
trict in the county. In this posi
tion he was a faithful , efficient
worker and his administration of
school affairs was highly satisfac
tory. After his term of office ex
pired he was interested in the stock
business for a few years , but the
past twelve years has been eugag-
iu the hardware business at Arapahoe -
ahoe , and has one of the largest
and best paying business enter
prises in southwestern Nebraska.
Mr. Allen is in every respect a
business man and his success has
been remarkable ; starting at the
bottom , he has through his untir
ing energy and diligence , built up
an excellent business. Two years
ago Mr. Allen was nominated for
state senator and run over 600 votes
ahead of his ticket , That should
be sufficient evidence of his quali
fications for the office as well as
hie standing among his fellow cit
izens. His re-nomination this
year indicates that be is an ex
ceptionally strong man and he
goes into the campaign with every
advantage. He has the entire sup
port of his own party and he will
draw largely from the other tick-
els. He is an excellent campaign
er and a staunch Republican , and
there is every indication of a lively
senatorial campaign with favorable
chances for Mr. Allen.
THE Republicans of Red Wil
low county ask the suffrages of the
voters of the county for J.E.Hath-
orn for representative with all con
fidence and assurance. The doc
tor is especially well equipped to
make the people of the county an
active and efficient representative
in the state legislature , and the
people should see to it that the
doctor has the necessary votes to
make him their representative.
THE office of governor of the
state of Nebraska demands a man
of large and high-class ability.
The splendid qualifications of
Judge Hayward , the Republican
nominee , are admitted by foe and
friend. His immeasurable super
iority over hie opponent is evident.
A vote for him will be a ballot for
a man who will do honor to the
great state of Nebraska in the gov
ernor's office.
CAPTAIN ADAMS has made a suc
cess of life it ) all its relations. He
will make a successful congress
man , for he will carry into that of
fice the same methods and energy
and judgment that have brought
him success in other walks of life.

W. R. STARR is so well qualified
for the office he seeks that it were
entirely unnecessary to mention
the matter for the consideration of
the votersof Eed Willow county.
The people of the county know his
fitness and ability for the position
and will no doubt elect him to it
by a sure and safe majority.
THE returns in Maine show that
the state has no desire to retire
even temporarily from the Repub
lican column , although the major
ities will be considerably reduced
through the failure to conduct a
vigorous campaign and the feeling
that the result was virtually settled
before the ballots were cast. This
is a good year to look out for the
over confidence that so often loses
doubtful states to the republicans.
The habit of going to the polls
every time an election is on is an
excellent one for every good citizen
to cultivate. Journal.
SUCH fiendish deeds as the cow
ardly assassination of Empress
Elizabeth of Austria , last Satur
day , cruelly reminds the world of
the stern necessity of handling an
archists with the utmost vigor and
rigor. The deed was an incon
ceivably atrocious one , exhibiting
the wolfish nature of the malig
nant "red. " There is small room
on earth for such unfeeling brutes
and society and governments may
well protect themselves from their
heartless , remorseless attacks. A
"man-eating" tiger is tender of
heart and merciful compared with
the dastardly blood-thirstiness of
such as the unspeakable Luigini.

tion and October 6th is the date
for the "Old-fashioned Basket Pic
nic" at Hanscom park. Governor
Hastings and staff and noted people

eral Smith will orate. It will be
a great day for Pennsylvanians.
Let the Pennsylvanians of Red
Willow county organize a club , as
is being done all over Nebraska ,
and make a special effort to have
this county well represented at that
time and on that occasion. All
interested may call at this office
and enrol themselves in the Penn
sylvania club no fee for registra
tion and their names will be for
warded to the headquarters of the
society in Omaha.
