THE Populists renomiimtecl Con
gressman Sutherland at their con
vention in Holdrege , Tuesday , by
acclamation.
CONDITIONS in the Fifth district
are much more encouraging and
the expectation is widely enter
tained that the next representative
from this district will be in har
mony with the administration.
THE Democrats and Free Silver
Republicans stole a march on the
Populists at Holdrege , Tuesday ,
by nominating Congressman Suth
erland first. This placed the Pop
ulists in position of endorsing ,
rather than the other fellows.
_ W B. STARR will be the next
attorney of Red Willow county ,
and this fact can be counted a
source of satisfaction and congrat
ulation to the tax-payers of the
county. He is a lawyer of recog
nized ability and will give the
people an able and careful prose
cutor.
THE nomination of Hay ward for
governor is keeping the Fusion for
ces guessing harder than they havp
for a number of years. He is a
large and brainy man who has the
respect and admiration of all who
come in contact with him and will
roll up a big vote in the coming
November election accordingly.
DR. J. K HATHORN is especially
well qualified for the office of rep
resentative. A professional man of
liberal education , ready of speech ,
energetic and a careful weigher of
public affairs and public duties
he will make Red Willow count }
a highly creditable and efficient
servant in the halls of the state
legislature.
The hospital , commissary and
transportation departments of the
army have not covered themselves
with any amount of desirable
honor in the Spanish-American
war. They all need a little ener
getic and intelligent bracing up ,
at least. And yet the widespread
sickness is largely due to wilfulness -
ness , neglect and ignorance of the
volunteers themselves , especialy !
those in camps , as well as in the t :
uuprepareduess of the departments
mentioned.
IT has bee.i truly said that the
next session of congress will be
one of the most important since
the reconstruction period , and that
the demand is for large men , men
of high motives and honorable in
tentions , men of pure purposes.
The average political hack will
not measure up to the require
ments of the da } ' . America is
coming out into a larger place , and
demands broader men to make her
laws. The Fifth district should be
represented by such a man , and if
lightning should strike Deacon
Morlan in the Republican conven
tion which meets in Holdrege ,
next Tuesday evening , a great
advance would be made toward se
curing talent and ability in our ,
fcalls of legislation.
STAND up for America. Stand
up for Nebraska. Stand up foi
Red Willow county. Stand up
for McCook. Stand up for every
honorable and useful organization ,
social , religious , political , or com
mercial with which you are con
nected. Any half-hearted support
is unbecoming a man. If you
can't be sanctimonious , and rad
ical , and partisan , AND WE DON'T
"nnii IT , bo loyal to your own.
* * *
< >
Shoot or give up uie
be a "quaker gun. " Maybe your
prayers are poor and faltering ,
your bank account small and your
raiment common , but if you are
true and loyal to your engage
ments of every sort , a multitude
of sins will thus be covered. Do ;
don't tear down. Require nothing
you would not give. Be fair and
considerate of the rights of others.
Maintain your own rights like a
patriot. Be faithful.
THE manner in which Congress
man Sutherland assailed the pres
ent administration , in his accept
ance speech at Holdrege , Tuesday ,
because it did not declare war with
Spain Joug before it did , accentu
ates the suspiciou we have had for
some time that Roderick Dim is
but a common , though perhaps
shrewd politician , without any of
the earmarks of the statesman or
intelligently patriotic citizen.
Nothing has paid higher tribute
to the far-seeing statesmanship of
President McKiuley than the man
agement of the Spanish war , which
has been absolutely with a flaw.
Roderick might have told them
about some of his clever pension
schemes without so much loss of
respect.
E. N. ALLEN has been given the
Furuas county delegation for state
senator with enthusiasm. Ed made
a strong run , two years since , and
it would not surprise THE TRIBUNE
to see him defeat Mr. Graham ,
the next time. Mr. Allen would
make the district an energetic and
intelligent senator and his renomi-
natiou is among the possibilities ,
nay even probabilities of the com
ing senatorial convention in our
city.

Watermelons are a scarce article
in this locality and we are reminded
of the time when not far away was
located a certain patch where the
melons had been watered and shad
ed and tended to such an extent
that they grew to an amazing size ,
and the only fellow in the neigh
borhood known to hammer a bass
viol ns it should be helped the
writer to take more than one of
those same melons into a nearby
iornfield , and we had anything but
i hot time.
