OUR next governor will be pres
ent at the congressional co.iven-
tion at Holdrege , August 30th ,
and make an address which will be
worth the full price of admission.
THE Democrats of the 29th sen
atorial district announce their con
vention to be held in McCook ,
Thursday , August 25th. The Dem
ocratic disposition to play second
violin has about disappeared.
THE Populists of the Twenty-
ninth district placed Senator Gra
ham of Frontier county in renom-
ination in their convention in Cul-
bertson , Saturday last. On the
twenty-sixth instant the Republi
cans will nominate a man who will
show Mr. Graham a fleet pair of
heels.
THE speech delivered by Sena
tor Thurston before the late Re
publican state convention is de
scribed as being one o the happi
est ever delivered by the senator ,
who has an enviable reputation as
a speech maker. It was particu
larly apropos and effective in lan
guage and was delivered in splen
did voice and fine form. The sen
ator promises to be in the fight ,
this fall , to the finish , and effective
results may be expected.
COLONEL MITCHELL closes a
nasty and cowardly assault on W.
R. Starr and a fulsome praise of
S. R. Smith with the child-like
and innocent statement that "S. R.
Smith is an active worker in the
Methodist Episcopal church. " We
had hoped that the church rackel
would never again be worked in
Red Willow county politics. Vain
hope. But if Mr. Smith has noth
ing better to present in his behalf
than that he is an active worker in
the Methodist church , an agitator
of the couutyseat removal cause ,
and an assailant of his opponent's
personal character , his chances of
election to the office of county
attorney are very slim indeed. It
is a question of qualification , not
one of church membership or non-
church membership ; and Method
ists will resent the plain effort to
ride into office on the strength of
membership in their church.

ters made a trip to Stratton for
the purpose of visiting her daugh
ter , Mrs. Ernest. So we were told ,
but we are not sure if it is true.
Unless our salary as local re
porter is raised all our items must
end like the above. We must have
means to travel about the neigh
borhood and sift matters to the
bottom. We shall consider it a
personal favor if folks will stop
congratulating George Loomis and
Ida Hawkswell. There is no call
for it. A neighbor told us they
were married , but it is false , and
the broken-hearted boys and girls
are convalescing.
