to the convention of Women's Clubs in
Denver.
Mrs. J. A. Harris went down to Repub
lican City , Thursday morning , on a visit.
Miss Zetta Dawson , who has been visit
ing her , returned to her home in Repub
lican City on the same train.
No. I , Monday morning , arrived here
in two sections , the second section carry
ing delegates to the convention of Wom
en's Clubs in Denver. The train was
equipped with a diner and baggage car ,
all the other cars being Pullman sleepers.

A Soldier Boy's Letter.
Catholic Truth Society , Camp Merrill ,

Dear Father : I received your letter to
day. The letters I have written to you
have all borne my address. The reason
why I have not named my "camp or com
pany was because I was not j-etassigned.
San Francisco is a city of wonders. It
is always cool here on account of the
breeze from the bay.I cannot tell you
anything , much about army life yet , for
I am not settled down enough and have
to study to drill. We. use the ' 97 Krag-
Jorgensen. We have to .drill five hours
a day. We eat-beans , bacon , bread , hash
and coffee. , We have one knapsack ,
one haversack , one combined plate and
frying-pan , one cup , knife , fork and
spoon. I belong to the regulars. I have
one knit shirt of blue , a pair of shoes , a
hat , , plenty of underwear , a blanket and
that is all. My companions in the tent
are the nicest fellows I know. When
I was in Fort McPherson , from which
place I wrote you , we lived two weeks
on slum and hard-tack and had no
blankets. Eight days have passed since
my nineteenth birthday. I have a fine
time going on the steamboats. I went
to a park picnic ; we had fat women's
races and several other things. We are
camped by the Golden Gate park ; it has
all kinds of .foreign plants and trees in
it. On one of these high hills or low
mountains is a high building where a
fine viexv can be obtained of all the city.
To the south of us is the Golden Gate
park ; to the east is about three miles of
graves and also a crematory ; to the west
is a graveyard ; we are also encamped
over an old Chinese burying ground.

Uncle Sam Knows Best.
Two deaths in a volunteer regiment in
one day. One died because he ate too
little , the other because he ate too much.
The one crossed the valley of the shadow
as the result of not feeding a cold and
thus allowing the cold to become pneu
monia. The other crossed the same
valley as the result of eating pies and
doughnuts and candied yams when he
should have been eating bacon and beans
and fried potatoes.
Perhaps the volunteers will learn that
the unpalatable rations furnished by
Uncle Sam are really the best suited for

Parent Plant Destroyed.
The Beatrice Creamery Co. plant in
Lincoln was completely destroyed by
fire , Wednesday night , entailing a loss
of about $35,000 , upon which they have
an insurance of $ iScoo. The egg de
partment of the company will be opened
at once in Lincoln , while the churning
will be temporarily carried on by the
company in its other factories in Bea
trice , and other points.
