Geo. LeHew , night caller , went down
to Hastings , Saturday evening on 6 , on
a short visit to friends , returning Mon
day night.
Conductor George Beck went down 1o
the Hastings-Oberlin line , Sunday morn
ing , to help pick up a slight wreck on
that branch.
Claim Agent Hanson is able to be
about again after a' severe tussle with a
badly ulcerated tooth and threatened
blood poisoning.
The change of time of No. 4 made it
necessary to reopen night offices at Bart-
ley , Holbrook and Edison. C. E. Me-
Manigal is night man at Bartley.
Mr. and Mrs. C. H. McCarl , who have
been visiting among far eastern relatives ,
friends and scenes for a few weeks , re
turned home on last Friday evening.
Engineer H. L. Donovan took No. 301
up to Denver , Saturday , and on Sunday
brought back the 216 for repairs here.
The 301 is the Denver switch engine.
On account of the giving way of the
track in the pit of the round house at
Orleans , Monday night , engine 261 came
near going over on her side. The block
ing car was sent down , Tuesday morn
ing , to assist in placing the engine on
her wheels again.

A car got crosswise of the track tn
the Hastings-Oberlin line , last Satur
day , delaying traffic n little.
No. 3 did not wait for the Kansas Ciiy
connection at Oxford , Wednesday night ,
which made it neccessary for No 15 to
run on through to Denver.
J. P. Brown of Connorsville , Indiana ,
is traveling over the .Burlington system
advocating the planting of trees along
the line of the railroad. He argues that
it will demonstrate that trees do well in
Nebraska and encourage others to do
likewise.
The regular quadriennial weighing of
railroad mail in practically the entire
territory west of the Mississippi river
commenced this week. For the next
thirty-five days every ounce of mail
that is carried by the railroads in this
section of the country will be carefully
weighed each day by the postal clerks
or weighers. From the results obtained
a daily average will be struck and on the
basis thus formed the western railroads
will be paid during the next four years
for carrying United States mail.
BANKSVILLE.
C. F. Elliott was marketing some fat
iiogs in McCook , last week.
Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Benjamin spent
Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Relph.
Nearly all the farmers that are not
sowing wheat are putting in full time
ivith the breaking plow.
The winter of 1897-98 was unusually
mild , but March is getting in full time
vith wind , snow , and dust.
Rev. White preached at the Pleasant
Prairie school-house , Sunday. Three
lew members were added to the United
Jrethren class.
Miss Annie Hill met with an accident
io her bicycle while en route to Banks-
ville , Sunday , and was compelled to take
other conveyance home.
Mrs. Sarah Lincoln , who was quite
sick with pneumonia at the home of her
parents , Mr. and Mrs. Goodenberger , is
much better. Her brother Dave , from
the Black Hills , and husband , George
Lincoln , of Lincoln , Nebraska , formerly
of this precinct , were sent for and at
tended her and her mother during their
sickness.
GERVER.
Farming was delayed a few days on
account of the recent wintry snap.
A. V. Olmstead has returned from a
trip to Friend , this state , where he was
called by the serious illness of his aged
father , who died a few days after his ar
rival at Friend.
One of our citizens caused the arrest of
John Bungers , of Valley Grange pre
cinct , for stealing wheat. Bungers was
given a hearing before Judge Bishop on
Tuesday , and bound over to appear at
the next term of the district court.
Dave Goodenberger , who has been
making his home at Spearfish , S. D. , for
nearly four years , wass called home by
the illness of his mother. Mrs. Lincoln ,
a sister , was also called from Lincoln ,
Nebraska , and was here but a few days
when she was taken sick with the same
disease , pneumonia , but is rapidly im
proving.
