The employes of the Burlington shops in this city had another hour added to their day's work , which will hereafter be nine instead of eight. The custom here tofore has been to cut the hours shorter in winter , but the revival of business since McKinley's election justifies the change The men go to work now at 7:30 and quit at 5:00 with a half hour at noon. Plattstnouth News. The Burlington passenger department is considering another form of mileage book. It is said to be the best yet offered. It is a Philadelphia production and is known as the Wright mileage ticket. It is a homogeneous piece of paper and is uot composed of portions pasted together - gether like most mileage books. It as sists the conductor in calculating the mileage he wishes to extract and also prevents the fradulent use of the cover. The new underground roads that are to be built in London to connect the termini of the great railways are to be equipped with American cars. The pro jectors found that to make the tunnels large enough for the English coaches , with their side doors , would require an additional outlay of at least 40 per cent. So they adopted the American cars , aud were glad that they had so good an ex cuse for it. The new roads are to bur row underneath the sewers , under the Thames , in fact , under the foundations of the whole city , at a depth of about 100 feet. The scheme is considered entirely safe , as the system of construction is such that no settling is possible. As fast as a tunnel progresses it is lined with a shield packed in cement , which makes it vir tually an enormous cast iron pipe.through which the cars will run , propelled by electricity.
