Engineer W. D. Burnett is sick with
the whooping ; cough and is threatened
with an attack of pneumonia.
Passenger train No. 4 on the Burling
ton , due here from the west at 3:50 : a.m. ,
was wrecked , Wednesday morning , just
after entering the yards , as the result of
a heavy wind storm that passed over
the city a little while before. An empty
stock car that had been standing on the
stock yards switch was blown onto the
main line'and the passenger train col
lided with it just west of the round
house. The engine , No. 208 , and the
baggage car , were thrown from the track
by the force of the impact and were bad
ly wrecked. Engineer Noren and Fire
man Worden escaped injury by jumping
and there was no one hurt. Hastings

Two Corrections.
• Two corrections should be made in the
county commissioners' proceedings that
appeared in last week's Tribune.
First The levy for "free high school
fund" is 1 mill instead of 11 mills.
Second The board decided that no
bills would be allowed for Russian this
tles destroyed during 1896.
The Band Concert.
The Nebraska Brigade band rendered
an unusually fine and enjoyable program
of their music , last evening , in the hear
ing of a large and pleased audience.
The boys are rapidly getting in fine
shape , and their work is hard to equal
in this state.
The electrical display , Wednesday
night , was something appalling to the
nervous and timid.

day , on business and pleasure.

the city , last evening , on his way to
Galesburg , Illinois , where he goes to

To California in a Tourist Sleeper.
The Burlington Route personally con

A Delightful Concert.
The concert given by Rebecca Mc
Kenzie and company , Wednesda } ' evening -
ing , in the Menard opera hall , under
auspices of the Baptist church people ,
was a charming event , and the perform
ance was greeted bj' a good-sized and
very enthusiastic audience. The violin
work was especially entrancing the like
has never before been heard in this part
of Nebraska. Everyone was fascinated
by the charming violin solos , which were
in each instance enchored to the echo ,
the audience hardly being satisfied with
one response. The enthusiasm of the
audience amounted to an ovation. The
singing and efforts of the pianist were
first class and highly enjo3ed. The
Baptist brethren are to be congratulated
upon the artistic success of the concert ,
which we hope netted the church a neat
sum.
The Deadly Lightning : .
Wednesday night , C. F. Elliott of
Grant precint , lost five cows and three
steers by lightning. The animals were
under a shed in a corral. The lightning
struck the fence and the barbed wire
conducted the deadly fluid through the
shed , killing all the animals lying ad
joining the wire. The cattle were in
sured.
Pay Your Dog Tax.
Owners of dogs are requested to call
at the office of the city clerk at once
and pay tax on their dogs. The police
are instructed to dispose of all untagged
dogs as provided by city ordinance , so
owners of valuable or pet dogs should
act promptly in this matter.
