REPUBLICAN TICKET.
For Congressman-Fifth District ,
WILLIAM E. ANDREWS of Adams County.
For Representative-65th District ,
1 R. P. HtG1t of Lebanon Precinct.
For County Attorney ,
HARLOW . KEVES of Indianola Precinct.
For Commissioner-First District ,
AA } EX. D. JOHNSTON of Valley Grange Prec.
IT seems to be the popular thing , just
now , to roast Ex-Governor Crounse , and
consequently notafew Republican newspapers -
papers are joining in the chorus. But
Crounse did not shoot so wide of the
mark after all in his solid shot resolutions -
tions , the bitter keenness of which is
recognized by all , if they do entertain
doubts of their propriety.
THE quadrennial general conference
of the Methodist Episcopal church will
be held at Cleveland , Ohio , in May , and
will be addressed by Hon. William Mc-
Kinley. Governor McKinley is a consistent -
sistent member of the M. E. church ,
which fact makes the insane attack upon
him by the A. P. A. seem indeed ridicu-
lous.-Seward Reporter.
REPUBLICANS are beginning to talk
of the" slate" . There is every reason to
believe that the influence that opposed
Jack MacCoil , two years ago , is now disposed -
posed to give its strength to this patient
candidate , and the slate , at the present
moment , is said to be : MacCoil for governor -
ernor , McNish for treasurer , McClay for
auditor. But slates made in April = ray
be hopelessly smashed before July.-
Lincoln Courier.
i
THE question of collaterals and securities -
ities is each year more and more entering -
ing into the nomination of state treasurer -
er , and this fact makes it of vast importance -
tance that the matter of legacy or suet -
t cession be interrupted by the people.
This is one of the stumbling blocks in
the way of the combine now alleged to
I exist in favor of the "Three Macs" , and
which the versatile and clever Joe Bart-
i
Icy is said to be exploiting with all his
genius.
TIlE newspapers and Republicans gen-
erallyre beginning to write and talk
about the "combine's slate" , which already -
ready seems to be made up with Mac-
Coil for governor , McNish for treasurer ,
and McClay for auditor. With Joe Bart-
ley , the astute and clever politician of
the state treasurer's office , in the head
push , things seem to be moving along
very smoothly for the "Three Macs" .
And yet the query naturally arises in the
{ thoughtful mind , why is the state tress-
' erer so anxious about the successor to his
office ? And again , is it good business
sense or sensible political policy for the
state of Nebraska or for the Republican
party to allow this dictation of a successor -
cessor to any state office , and especially
of an office with the possibilities and
ramifications of the state treasurership ?
Where are we at brethren ?
Another Combine.
Some of the newspapers over the state
are seriously intimating that a com = bine
has been formed by MacCoil for governor -
or , Mellish for treasurer and McClay for
auditor-the ostensibe object of which
seems to be to carry out time wishes of a
well known state official now in office ,
whose sole object is to turn over as a le.
gacy what collaterals he has left. There
certainly are indications of the existence
of such a combine , and the Republicans
should express their disapproval when
the time conies , as they no doubt will.
The first intimation of such a scheme
naturally comes from the Lincoln papers -
pers , the Courier publishing the announcement -
nouncement in a recent issue of such a
rumor around the lobbies of the capital
city. Time experience of a few nien get-
ing together and endeavoring to control
the last convention was a very unsatisfactory -
factory one , and if there is any foundation -
tion in this new scheme , the rank and
file might just as well send in their preferences -
ferences on a postal card and have the
same 0. K.'d by the combine. We can
hardly believe that MacCool has been
engaged in this combine.-Grand Island
Independent.
The Power of the Press.
Any political party desirous of permanent -
manent success must build per = manently.
Its principles must first be those meeting
the wants of the public in general , and
when these are once established time best
agencies must be utilized to get them before -
fore the people. The mistaken idea that
many leaders have , that the press is a
minor factor , very often results in the
failure of a good cause. It too frequently -
' ly occurs that the force which makes
men great and fixes the destinies of parties -
ties is too often forgotten when the oBce :
seeker has reached his desired goal.
Some little minor office is thrown to time
' newspaper man for his loyal support ,
while the man who has done comparatively -
tively nothing is rewarded with the
spoils. The fraternity are largely to
blame for this condition of things , and
should interest themselves iii bringing
about a change. Let the politicians be
given to understand that they are dependent -
pendent on the press for the success of
their schemes and time press will benefit
only by reciprocity.-Grand Island Inde-
pendent.
