VALUE OF SUBSOiUNG.
Bulletin from the Nebraska Agricultural -
cultural Experiment Station.
The latest bulletin from the agricultural -
tural experiment station of Nebraska ,
No. 43 , just from the Journal press , is
a neat pamphlet of sixteen pages on
"The Couservatiou of Soil Moisture by
Means of Subsoil Plowing" , by T. I
Lyon , agriculturist of the station. It
graphically sets forth the difference between -
tween corn raised on land where the
subsoil has been loosened aid that on
laud plowed after the ordinary fashion.
The illustrations being half tone reproductions -
ductions of photographs , there is no
gainsaying their evidence. The contrasting -
trasting rows of corn were ou parts of
the same field of the state farm , the
good corn growing on land that in z89t
was subsoiled to plant sugar beets.
The loosening of the lower soil even
that long ago made a wonderful differ-
erence in the stand of corn , and enabled
it to withstand the dry weather and
produce a fair crop , while the surface
plowed portions of the field was withered -
ered and worthless This benefit is to
be expected , however , only tvhere the
i
subsoil is dry and hard or impervious to
moisture. Loose and gravelly or sandy
subsoils should not be worked , as the
I moisture is then lost more than if only
the surface is plowed.
The bulletin abe gives the result of
the experiments of Younger Bros. of
Geneva , which is all 1r favor of sub-
soiling. The subsoil plowing should be
be done in the fail , to allow all the tvin-
ter moisture to soak in.-State Journal ,
