( ODD FREAKS OF NATURE.
JI In ; Who Wont About With Two Or
sage Trees of Considerable Size.
A party of pedestrians while tramp
Ing along \'l'issalmicken had thou ]
attention drawn to a singularly
shaped tree growing along the creek
side of tha drive. The tree when 'a
sapling had evidently been fixed by
some medlet' with nature , who , after .
penetrating one stem with a knife ,
inserted the end of a branch into the
hole and left it there to grow
The peculiar formation led the
party into talking of other peculiarities -
ties tivhkh they had observed , says
the Philadelphia . One of the
trio said : 'W11en I was a boy I went
with several other boys into the
woods that stood back from the village
lage of Plymouth to gather wild
flowers. Wre tramped through the
woods until the underbrush became
so thick that we had to crawl in
places en our hands and knees. One
of the boys , a venturesome little id -
Tow. who was as full of fun as an egg
is of meat , was on the Lead , and , all
l.t once cried out : 'Say , fellers ,
come here and see what I'vo found. '
We hurried forward and saw him
bending over the skull of an ox
which lay on the ground face up-j
ward. From each of the eve-sockets
there was growing a small chestnut
tree , while from whcmo the ears were
enceattached a beautiful vine shot
forth , intertwining the horns and
trailing gracefully about the skull
"We looked about for a piece of
lark or some other object upon
WllWh we could transport the odd
flower-pot to one of our homes. We
sicccded in getting it out of the
thicket , after carefully placing it
upon a piece of bark. When we got
to a clearance wo drew lots to see
who should own the find. The lot
fell to me and the other boys helped
me to carry it homewhero my father
planted it in the garden. The vine
died , but the chestnut trees grew to
be large trees. The skull long ago
crumbled to dust and formed a fertilizer -
tilizer for the trees , which today
look like one. Growing so close together -
gether they grew into each other. I
go out to the old place every autumn

which the owner is kind enough to
call mine. Last autumn I found that
the tree had been slightly injured
dttrin : ! the summer by being struck
by lightning , and I ma"e arrangements -
ments with1 the owner that if it
aliould die I am to get the timber ,
which I shall have made up into

from it an ox's skull , from which I

a
inat's really a curiosity , " remarked -
marked one of his companions , "but
it don't come up to what took place
where I was a boy in Haddington.
A neighbor of ours had a pet crow
that was up to all sorts of mischief.
My mother gotme to gather her a lot
of acorns one fall to make fancy work
for an approaching fair. One day
while she was sticking the acorns on
the outside of a box , the crow hopped
over into the yard and up on the
porch and watched her work.
"As soon as she tuined her back ,
Jim , as we used to call him , jumped
up on the table , picked up an acorn
and made off like a thief. Mother
threw a small stick at him , and it
struck him on the head. The poor
bird tumbled over and we thought it
was dead , but it came too in a little
while and hopped away. It was
never seen again till the next summer -
mer , when the neighbor tore down
an old frame building , under
which the decomposed carcass of the
crow was found. Upon examining
it a small oak tree was found growing -
ing from between its upper and lower
hills. I carriol the carcass home on
a shovel and planted it carefully in
the garden , where it grew rapidly.
"I saw the tree last month and it
is as pretty an oak as can be seen
anywhere. Up where the branches
shoot out there is a peculiar lump ,
which when viewed from a certain
direction is an exact resemblance of
a crow's head. The limbs look for
all the world as though the gigantio
bird was holding its mouth wide
open. "
"Did I ever tell you about our
orange tree ? " asked another of the
company. .
"Neil , I think it is the greatest
vegetable wonder I ever heard of.
Father , while eating an orange one
Christmas , took several of the seeds
and placed them in a sore that was
on our old dog's back. A horse doctor -
tor told him the seeds would cause
an irritation which would make the
sore heal up. Nell , sir , two of the
seeds took rgot and grew and that
dog moved about for more than two
years with the twin trees growing
out of his back.
"The sere healed up , but poor old
Ponte got horned by a steer one day
anti was so badly injured that ho
died. Father cut a chunk out of his
back and transplanted the trees in a
box. They grew splendidly , and
while they never bore any fruit they
had plenty of bark. "
English ignorance of America did
not begin with this generation.

SECURITIES MADE SECURE.
Why Wail Street by Tight Otl'ere Little
Temptation to Burglars.
"Come , hurry up , I want to get
away ! "
The speaker was the junior member
of a big firm of brokers and bankers
on Nall street , and the addressed was
a young man of athletic figure , who
held a clerkship in the same office.
The latter was leaning against a large
tin box , such as is used for the safe
keeping of bonds , stocks and other
valuable securities. Ho had been
talking with a fellow clerk , but immediately -
mediately after the above remark he
abruptly broke off , the conversation
and turned to examine the lock of the
box. Having satisfied himself that
it was all right he nodded' to two
other clerks who were waiting near
by. These picked up the box and
started for the door , preceded by the
junior partner and followed by the
other clerk. In this order they proceeded -
ceeded up Nall street to Broad , and
thence to the stock exchange.
In the basement of the latter are a
number cf vaults and several watchmen -
men are in charge by night as well as
by day. The broker drew an odd-
4 looking steel instrument out of his
pocket , which proved to be a key for
a combination lock. With this ho
opened one of the vaults and waited
until the tin box had been deposited
inside. Then be carefully locked the
vault again , tested the doors to see
that they wore secure , and went out
with his clerks.
1 , About 4 o'clock every afternoon the
scene described above is repeated
many times in Wall street. The
other afternoon a number of young
lvomen who wore visiting the street
with an escort , passed by the office of
a broker who does an enormous business -
iness and is worth many millions in
his own right.
"Oh girls , " said one , pointing at
the big safe visible from the street ,
"wouldn't we have a fine time if we
could get into that ? "
All her companions stopped to look
at the safe and to indulge in surmises
as to the value of its contents.
, .nt to know just what
there is in that safe ? " asked their escort -
cert , with an amused smile.
"Yes , tell us. "
"Well , there are some old papers
not worth a dollar , a few dollars'
worth of postage stamps , and less
than $10 in change. "
"Why , where are all the stocks an (
bonds , and the thousand dollar bills
we read.about.asked the girls in
chorus.
"They are safely locked up in the
! took exchange vaults , " he replied.
It is a fact that there. Is hardlya

ables in his office over night , says
the New York Sun. Just before
closing time every day the brokers
who are members of the "tock exchange -
change pack their securities and cash
in a strong box and take them to the
vaults in the basement of the ex '
change. Each member has a vault
of his own there. It is interesting tc
watch some of them when they lock
the vaults. The men with big boxes
filled to overflowing with valuable
securities are usually very calm and
nonchalant , but the men with limited
possessions usually spend about five
minutes in making sure that the
vaults have been securely locked.
The reason the brokers take all this
trouble is because these'vaults acre always -
ways guarded. The brokers who are
not members of the exchange take
their securities to the vaults of safe
deposit companies. Private bankers ,
who do not keep watchmen , also take
their valuables to guarded vaults.
After business hours Nall street is
about the least profitable place for
7 burglars in the city.
TEMPTS THE THUNDERBOLTS.
Danger of the Washington Monument
and Its Good LRCk.
It is for electrical engineers to say
whether there is not danger of a
catastrophe in the great monument
of granite and marble which the peo-
pie of America have erected to the
honored memory of George Wash-
ington. The monster obelisk , capped
by its aluminum tip , is supported on
the inside by eight immense iron
columns running from top to bottom.
That represents tons of metal piled
heatienward to the height of 555 feet ,
as if to tempt the thunderbolts. To
be sure , there are lightning rods on
the outside , but they are pigmy bits
of wire compared to the mass of iron
within. One of the attendants told
me the other day that there never
passes a severe thunderstorm without -
out some electrical disturbance in the
monument. Usually it has no more
serious effect than. to make the wires
and electric signals in the shaft act
better for some days following. Several -
eral times , however , he- says , he has
seen the iron columns wreahod with
fiery snakes with such a crackling
and hissing of blue-forked flame as
might well frighten a man with simple -
ple tastes On one ac2asion the attendant -
tendant assured me that he saw the
electric bolt leap from an electric
column and disappear down the well-
hole at the base of the shaft. Two
steps farther and ho would have been
directly in its path.
Now , the question is , and it would
seem worthy of serious consideration ,
whether according to . the laws of
probabilities ; such an aeoldent will

and a bolt shooting into the elevator
car. The probable results are not

only thing whichh reassures one is the
proverbial good luck which has at-
1 tended the monument ever since its
corner-stone was laid forty-five years
ago. Not a single humnim life was
lost in its construction. There tverc
no accidents , and have been none
during time eight years it has been
1 open to the public. No suicide has
been committed within its precincts ,
no crazy jumper has tried to throw
I himself from its height.

Wash Day.
"I don't know of any one thing
that impresses me more with the
idea of the brotherhood of man , "
said a humorous writer recently ,
"than the universality of the observance -
ance of Monday as wash-day.
"No matter where a man may live ,
on that day he sees the washing waving -
ing ; if in the city , in his own. backyard -
yard or from pulley lines from back
windows or on roofs ; if in time suburbs -
urbs , and his work be in the city , in
many yards as the train flashes by.
-We may differ on questions of
church or state , 1vmmt we all agree cn
Monday as wash-day. "
