The full text of the presi dent’s message appears in this issue. Read it. VanAlen has shown unexpected mettle in firmly declining the mis sion to Italy. His stock has gone up a number of points in the esti mation of the average American. The tone of his letter was dignified, manly and clear to a marked de gree. Colonel Peterson, in his in sane desire to quarrel with this paper, even picks up typographical errors and seeks to misrepresent and misconstrue them. Petty pol troonery seems to be one of his specialties. The amenities of newspaper life are somewhat strained up in Tren ton. The fact is that there is lia ble to be quite a noticeable atmos pheric disturbance wherever Tom and Bert reside within the same incorporation. And there is hard ly room enough for both of them in Hitchcock county. What’s the matter with “Our Jim” Harris as embassador to the court of King Humbert. Jim, we believe, could be induced to do the honors over in ancient Rome, if the matter was placed before him in its proper light. Jim wouldn’t shirk plain democratic duty, even though it proved a pecuniary loss to him. He’s a patriot. The following from the Beaver City Tribune was intended for some other fellow, but it applies to “Paramount Pete” with such pecu liar force as to warrant reproduc tion here: “When you hear a pre tended republican making a con tinuous howl against some other man’s republicanism, just hunt up the kicker’s past record and you fill find that he never was a sound republican himself.” When Oh! My! Peterson states that The Tkibune in any manner has ever sought to breed religious discord and malice in this commu nity he simply advertises himself as a monumental and unblushing liar of immeasurable possibilities. Add sneak to this statement and you have a comprehensive and a faithful characterization of this mendacious and contemptible little busybody,who never tells the truth about this paper while a lie can be resurrected from his cowardly soul which he imagines may damage us.
