PERSONAL GOSSIP. Francis of Vivonne, who lived at the ecu.. ..f Francis I of France, could stop a bull by seizing it by the horns. Governor Altgeld is reputed to be worth from $3,000,000 to $5,000,000. Most of it was made in speculation in Chicago real estate. Henry of Navarre was saved from death at the massacre of St. Bartholo mew by hiding under his wife’s immense fard ingale. Queen Victoria has discarded the check rein and forbidden its use on her car riage horses, both as a matter of taste and humanity. The Maharajah of Buroda is finely ed ucated, and the promotion of education among his people, who number 2,000,000, is his highest aim. John Varyanof Indianais in his ninety first year and doubtless the oldest legis Itt+ni- i-n the world. He has voted at 18 presidential elections. Archibald Rogers, owner of the fleet winged yacht Colonia, has a fino estate at Hyde Park, on the Hudson. It is called < ’ramvoid Farms and comprises about GOO acres. Abraham Lincoln was a man of great strength. Ho could with one blow "bury an ax in the trunk of a tree deejier than any other maxi, and he is said to have thrown across the roadway a pigeon house weighing GOO pounds. The eminent historian, Professor Mommsen of the University of Berlin, was obliged to go to Italy to escape the enthusiastic demonstrations of his friends in Berlin on the fiftieth anni versary of his receiving the doctor’s de gree. Black lace collarettes are trimmed with narrow jet pendant fringe. Black and white jacquard camel’s hair materials are used for autumn traveling COStll IlieS. Cream colored and chamois yellow felt hats in alpine and Duse shapes are trimmed with black velvet and black mercury wings. Many of the balloon sleeves are now cut into two moderately full puffs. Roll over collars are new, and with these small cuffs appear. Round waists have lost none of their prestige, but are rivaled by basque bod ices and pointed corsages with frills at tached to the lower edge. New mohair braids show stripes in «hor effects. Iridescent bead gimps o-e also imported. These make effects \ not expensive trimmings. Biaca and gray or black and white ribbons make pretty trimmings for au tumn dresses, the black velvet band showing a narrow satin edge. Black and white and brown and white suits made of the shepherd’s check fabrics ih fine wool are shown as suits entire, or made up in combination with plain Indian cashmere, camel’s hair or English serge. Draped doable skirts will appear with winter gowns, and accordion and kilt plaited skirts are already seen—the plaits or kilts by contraction and expansion wherever needed obviating the necessity of shaping by means of scissors.—New York Post. PHILOSOPHICAL COGITATIONS. It is an error to suppose that a man belongs to himself. No man does. He belongs to his wife, or his children, or his relations, or to society in some form or another. To be full of goodness, full of cheer fulness, full of sympathy, full of helpful hope, causes a man to carry blessings of which he himself is as unconscious as a lamp is of its own light. Never affect or assume a particular character, for it will never fit yon, hut probably give you ridicule, but leave it to your conduct, your virtues, your mor als and your manners to give you one. We make unlovely all our days by tho little soul we put into our efforts, by the waj in which duties push us forward, by lack of that electric something which makes all words, all deeds, quiver and glow. O thou that pinest in imprisonment of the actual and criest bitterly to the gods for a kingdom wherein to rule and create, know this of a truth. The thing thou seekest is already with thee, here or nowhere, eouldst thou only see.—Mon treal Star. WORLD’S FAIR NOTES. There's a glass palace in Midway plai sance where all the operations of cutting and making glass are exhibited without deception. Ttio entire floor space of the Kentucky building is undermined by a six foot tun nel, in the opening of which is scenery accurately reproducing the mouth of the Mammoth cave. An iron firm in Germany exhibits an iron tree made of various sized tubes. At night the tree is a beautiful sight. Instead of leaves the limbs are ablaze with yellow incandescent globes. In the Kansas building at the exposi tion is a banner made in 1858 by pupils of the Lombard school for the Lincoln Douglas campaign, a spinning wheel made in 1620, a chair that came over in the Mayflower and a flag made in 1776 and carried at Plattsbnrg in 1812. vu\H pPeaee ijon Jo ece ftoiu cPteap §J$e can eeP-P non cj oob (Eoobe iti owe Pi ne.
