Miss Maky Wheeled of Phila delphia. who became the Confess von Pappenheim of Germany about two years ago, has already found that a title does not make happiness and is preparing for the divorce court. Her experience should prove a warning to other American girls, but it will not. The announce.;.ent that all the railroads running out of Chicago have ordered Winchester rifles will send a warm thrill of comfort and joy over tiie American heart. Thousands of Winchesters but not one cent to bandits is the right motto. Now let the roads employ Sandeus of Centralis, 111., Mr. John Kloeuu of Coffey ville, Mr. Ray Simpson of Delta, Col., ns the three guardsmen and let them pick their men to guard all the treas ures going from Chicago and com ing in. Winchesters have a sharp nasal twang that is sharp and un pleasant to the bandit’s ear. It is strange that so simple a device as the repeating rifle has not been tried on the bandits before. The rabber bold has his weakness, and the whizzing bullets from the Winchester of the train guard is one of them. From now on let her whizz. lit:: “Brotherhood of Christian Unity,” which is a product of the Parliament of Religion at Chicago, contemplates the federation of the world upon a Christian basis. This is one of the reforms which must begin at home. It must be apparent to the different branches of the Christian church that they must harmonize their own differ ences and conquer their own pre judices and jealousies before they can look for success in converting the world to a common belief. The war of creeds in Christendom must cease before it will be poss ible to bring the other religious systems of the world under the banner of the cross. When it comes to be fully understood by the churches that Christianity, as revealed by its great Author, means love for the race, that its essence is charity, that its mission on earth is to lighten the burdens of mankind by the exercise of nat ural helpfulness—then, and not until then, may the hope of a uni versal religion be cherished by the world. The Chicago Tribune says that trusts should be pleased with the appointment of Mr. Hornblower as a justice of the supreme court of the United States. It appears from the record of that gentleman’s professional career that his fame as a lawyer and his lucrative prac tice have come almost wholly from his connection with the corpora tions, and it is said that it was this influence which had most to do with his selection. “Heisamau,” says the Tribune, “who during his legal life has been on the side of the trusts, the corporations and the monopolies, and has become saturated mentally with their ideas and selfishness.” If this is the fact, and it will hardly be ques tioned, the appointment is au un fortunate one, for corporate influ ence in the supreme judicial tribu nal has beeu far too great in the past and the hope of the people is in wholly freeing the supreme court from it. Mr. Cleveland ap pointed as his attorney general a lawyer who has nearly always been identified with corporations, and his selection of a justice of the su preme court with a similar record suggests that the president is not so hostile to the combinations as the reference to them in this iuaug ural address would indicate. In an age of fraud and adulteration, it is certainly gratifying to know tka) such an extensively used preparation as Ayer’s Sarsaparilla may be implicity relied upon. It never varies either in quality, appearance, or effect, but is always up to the standard. INOIANOLA ITEMS. Candidates and politicians are getting thick. Sheriff Banks and wife visited McCook, Wednesday. Win. Smith and Joe Stephens were up from Bartley, Tuesday. Croquet seems to be the rage among some of our male popula tion. The Republican caucuses for Indianola and Red Willow pre cincts were held on Wednesday, and while there was a large attend ance yet everything was harmon ious and perfectly fair. The dele gates from Indianola precinct are: Starr, Kinghorn, Mann, Stockton, Eskey, Mitchell, Bond and Crab tree. Red Willow precinct: Beck, Sexson, Hotze, Grass and By field. Miss Mattie Crawford is keep ing house for her sister Mrs. Moore while she attends the Great Fair. Mary Voss is a little better, but the mother and younger sister are down with the same fever. It was found by the neighbors that through failure of crops and sick ness they were suffering for the necessaries to care for the sick and sustain life, and the business men McCook, being notified of it, re sponded with their usual gener osity by sending groceries and meat enough to last two or three weeks; for which the family and neighbors were very thankful.
