Seventeen railroads have been foreclosed upon in the United States since the beginning of the year. They represented a total of about $37,000,000 of capital. This is not an alarming recard, but it must be remembered that the fore closures represent bankruptcies that may have commenced years ago. The real test of the prosperity of the roads is found in the new receiverships created since the first of January. According to the Railroad Age the record is not a cheerful one. The Age explains: During the six months twenty seven railway companies, with 5, 242 miles of operated lines and ag gregate debt and capital of $370, 831,000, have been forced to con fess inability to meet their obliga tions and have been taken posses sion of by the courts. In respect to amount of investment the half year shows a larger total than any entire year since 1885— from to nearly five times as much as any of these years except 1892; while in number of roads and mileage the six months also exceed each of these years expect the last, when the new era of bankruptcies appear ed to have set in. For some weeks the railroad companies have been figuring up the rates established by the inter minable maximum rate bill passed by the late unlameDted legislature and the result is rumored to be so astonishing, that the responsible officials will probibly refuse to make their schedules in conformity to the law until they are compelled to do so by an adversed decision of the J courts. They find that instead of | the 20 per cent reduction that the framers of the act pretended to make, the average cut is 33 per cent, and they will therefore be compelled to fight or go out of the local business.—Lincoln Journal. The latest reports from unofficial sources indicate that there will be a loss of 80,000,000 bushels as compared with the wheat crop of last year. The figures ere yet to be verified, but if they are correct the statement should have a stim ulating effect upon the market. Other conditions being equal, wheat should command a remuner ative price within the next twelve mouths.
