The director of the mint lias published statistics showing “the amount of money in the world.” From liis table it is learned that France stands at the head, holding $1,500,000,000 in coin, besides $81,000,000 in uncovered notes, making $40.50 per capita. Leav ing out such small countries as Holland, Belgium, Cuba, etc., the United States comes next of the great nations with $25.15 per head ns against $18.42 which sufficient ly supplies the wants of Great Britain. It is indeed strange that the enormous commerce of Great Britain can be sufficiently accom modated with such a moderate sum which differs by a few cents from the $17.72 which is the quota of Spain. Confidence is a plant of slow growth and does not thrive in any soil where revolutionary pro jects in financial legislation are being hatched. On the other hand with cheerful confidence and a high standard of commercial morality it is amazing haw small a quantity of metal either white or yellow, is required for all the mercantile transaction of a great nation, as we may see by the English returns just noted where coin is but a mere fraction of the total of things doing the work of currency. Checks are much more in use here than in England, and it would thus seem that our finrncial ills are caused by something besides a lack of suffi cient money “per capita.”—Lincoln Journal. It is disclosed that the receivers of the Reading Railroad company already as richly deserve the at tention of the courts as the com pany itself did when their appoint ment become necessary. The in creases of price which have recently been ordered by the agents of the several coal roads have raised the price of anthracite almost to the figures which had been reached just before the collapse of the Reading company. It is under stood that the receivers were repre sented in the ccmbination meetings at which these advances were or dered. Thus they became members of an unlawful combination engag ed in suppressing competition in the coal trade and making high and arbitrary prices for a necessary of life. The New York Times calls attention to the pertinent fact that it was the Pennsylvania court, of which one of these receivers was chief judge before he took the place he now holds, that not only denoun ced such a combination illegal, but also declared that under the laws of the state of New York it is a criminal offense. It is illegal at common law and a violation of the federal statutes as well. It appears that the severe strain and worry to which the President has been subjected since his inau guration has told upon his health. He is suffering from|a painful attack of rheumatism which has doubtless been superinduced by overwork and nervous tension. It is to be hoped that the politicians and office seek ers will now manifest enough con sideration for his comfort to give him the benefit of a quiet rest at Gray Gables. Nebraska’s banking law seems to Lave stood the test during the strain of the past too months. The failure of the investment company in this city might have effected six or eight smaller banks connected with it, but the state banking laws which require every bank to stand upon its own basis, proved effective. None of the connected banks have suffered in the least.—Bee. The daily cost of operating the World’s Columbian Exposition is $16,000. This is a snug sum, but it is doubtful whether it could be done for less. It is quite obvious to every person who has seen it that the big show is worth all that it has cost. Jay Gould modestly estimated his personal property at §500,000 and during his lifetime paid taxes on that amount alone. Proceedings before the snrrogats court in New York disclose that he had $75,000, 000 of that kind of property, and the estate has been assessed at $10, 000,000. It lms been discovered at Denver that a Chicago syndicate is system matically shipping deformed per sons vagrants to western cities, where they are takenin hand by local sharpers and sent out to beg on a percentage. A large number of the cripples and blind people examined have been found to be rank impos ters. Professor Brander Matthews maintains that slang has a useful function to preform in supplying new words to an inelastic language. He also says that the most superior slang comes from the west. The logical conclusion must be that the effete east is compelled to look to the west for the rejuvenating forces of its speech. Lieutenant Peary is on liis way toward the north pole by way of Baffin’s Bay and north of Green land; Dr. Nansen, of Norway, will start from the islands off the north coast of Siberia and endeavor to float across to the pole. He expects to come through on this side and has made no arrangements for a return the other way. A business man named Jackson, of England, will approach the pole by way of Franz Joseph’s land. As the full returns come in it is seen that the horrors of the Iowa tornado were not overdrawn in the first dispatches. The work of the storm was done mostly in the coun try districts, but *the damage was very great and the list of the dead and injured is distressingly large. It is counted a curious circumstan ce that Cherokee county, which lay in the path of this storm, has been visited by floods and tornadoes and other disasters every summer for a number of years. There was a run on the bank at Waterton, N. Y., of which Govern or Flower is the principal owner. Flower is very rich and the bank was positively solvent, but deposi tors somehow had lost confidence and wanted their money. There upon the governor dished out some solid chunks of truth along with the cash. He told his neighbors that it was just such action as their own in demanding money they did not need that was forcing banks to foreclose on mortgages, thereby stopping industries and hunting trade and labor generally. The public should recognize the force of these utterances. At the same time bankers should remember that while they would have the faith of the people the confieence should be reciprocal. The man who draws money from circulation and puts it in a stocking for a safe deposit vault in these days is little short of a public enemy. The best thing to do with cash at present is to pay your debts with it. If you have no debts place it in a bank and let it earn interest for you and at the same time assist in relieving the pressure of gen eral contraction. “Be sure you get Ayer’s" is an im portant caution to all in search of a thoroughly-reliable b 1 o o d-p urifier, Ayer’s Sarsaparilla being the one on which there can be no manner of doubt. A shiftless man loves to talk about his bad luck. Food for Thought. The love of the country is inborn in children. Almost every child is an ar dent lover of nature, and a true poet in his enthusiastic appreciation of wide spaces ol blue sky or green meadow land, offorest and stream, hill and valley. To a child born in the city, rural things are a constant wonder and delight. The hay-field, the pasture with the lowing cattle, the barn with its rich store, the orchard with its dilicious promise, are all glimpses of paradise to him. Yet there are scores and hundreds, nay, thousands, of children in every city,, who have scarcely seen a tree, and never a stretch of green, in their lives. The little can or pot on the window-sill, care fully and laboriously filled with soil dug from the hard-trodden square of yard, wherein are planted a few spears of grass, some drooping weed, or a bit of moss,—procured, heaven only knows how!—represents the country to many a soul-starved, and too often, body-star ved, child, and expands to the propor tions of a wide domain in the dreaming brain of early youth.—From “The Fresh Air Children,” in Remorest's Family Magazine for August. I have listened to many ingenuous persons who say we are better off now than we ever were before. I do not know how well off we ever were before, but l know positively that many desdev ing persons of my acquaintance have great difficulty in living under these im proved circumstances. I simply cannot paint, nor read nor look at minerals, nor do any thing else I like, and the very light of the morning sky has become hateful to me because of the misery that I know of and signs of where I know it not which no imagination can inter pret too bitterly.—John Ruskin. Specimen Cases. S. H. Clifford, New Castle, Wis., was troubled with neuralgia and rheumatism, his stomach was disordered, his liver was affected to an alarming degree, ap petite tell away and he was terribly re duced in flesh and strength. Three bottles of Electric Bitters cured him. Edward Shepherd, Harrisburg, 111., had a running sore on his leg of eight year’s standing. Used three bottles of Electric Bitters and seven boxes of Bucklen’s Arnica Salve and his leg is sound and well. John Speaker, Cataw ba, 0., had five large Fever sores on his leg, doctors said he was incurable. One bottle Electric Bitters and one box Bucklen’s Arnica Salve cured bun en tirely. Sold by McMillen. When a preacher becomes a politician it gives the devil a chance to hitch his sled to the Lord’s chariot During our epidemic of dysentery, in the summer of 1879, I sold 108 bottles of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, and it proved satis factory in every instance. The remedy is standard in this community.—Geo. B. Dunbar, Druggist, Center Point, la. The epidemic referred to was by far the worst thatever occurred in Iowa. Over forty persons died from it in a town of only 500 inhabitants; but every case in which this remedy was used recov ered. It was equally successful during the epidemic of bloody flux in Virginia in 18^7 and Michigan and southern Illi nois in 1888. It has been in constant use over eighteen years, and has proved itself to be the most successful medi cine yetdiscovered for bowel complaints. For sale by McConnell & Co. It is very foolish to give your child ren good advice while setting them a bad example. Mr. Thomas Batte, editor of the Graphic, Texarkana, Arkansas, has found what he believes to be the best remedy in existence for the flux. His experience is well worth remembering. He says: “Last summer I had a very severe attack of flux. I tried almost every known remedy, none giving re lief. Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy was recommended to me. I purchased a bottle and re ceived almost immediate relief. I con tinued to use the medicine and was en tirely cured. I take pleasure in recom mending this remedy to any person sur fering with such a disease, as in jin opinion it is the best medicine in exist ence.” 25 and 50 cent bottles for sale by McConnell & Co.
