The nation can give thanks sincerely
today because it has lived for thirty-
two years under the economic policy of
the republican party. During that
period it has advanced from a condition
of industrial and social distress and
impending public bankruptcy to a place
at the head of the list of the proudest
and strongest nations on the globe. It
has become the leader in wealth , in
dustry , commerce and all the activities
of civilization. It is today the wonder
and the admiration of the world. The
United States has much to be thankful
for , and the first of all it is thankful
that the republican policy has been put
into practice and that no opposing
party will be found bold enough to wipe
out the republican laws from the
statute book.
At the National Farmers' Congress
at Lincoln , this week , there was an ex
hibit of Nebraska products by counties.
Nineteen counties were represented ,
to-wit : Adams , Buffalo , Burt , Clay ,
Curaing , Ouster , Dodge , Fillmore , Gage ,
Hall , Holt , Johnson , Lancaster , Nema-
ha , Polk , Platte , Ked Willow , Saline
and Seward. The exhibit from Bed
Willow was more than twice as large as
any ; other county represented. The
largest corn and vegetables in the en
tire show was in this exhibit and at
tracted universal admiration. It was
the only exhibit from west of the 100th
meridian. At one end and in the cen
ter of the exhibit were two cards , 12x24
nches in size , on which was printed
"From west of 100th Meridian. "
Cards were placed at different points in
the exhibit on which were printed
"Grown in Red Willow County , South
western Nebraska. " It was the most at
tractively arranged exhibit and received
more friendly comments than any other
exhibit in the hall , and added largely
in bringing Red Willow county promi
nently before the visitors as a grand
agricultural county. The success of
the exhibit was due largely to the , efforts
of Wm.Coleman , who had charge of the
exhibit.

The Menard opera house has been
leased by W. H. Harris , of Cambridge ,

stand that Mr. Harris has leased a
number of other houses in the valley
and will manage quite a circuit. Such
an arrangement ought to give us some
fair plays this winter.
The county judges of Nebraska will
meet in Lincoln November 29 and 30
to discuss matters relating to the
amount of smile it is necessary to use
in forking over marriage licenses and
the etiquette proper , to use towards
charming widows that are well re
membered in wills.
Is it or is it not just a trifle odd that
Congressman McKeighan , ( whose fa
mous utterance , "I mean no disrespect
to the defenseless dead when I say that
I am no democrat , " will cause his name
to go thundering down the corridors of
time , ) should be called upon to furnish
the oratorical pyrotechnics for a demo
cratic jollification ?

close of the polls. The present plan
of allowing four days in which to make
returns is an abominable nuisance ; and
every county seems to have its quota
of hobos who delight in keeping back
their home election returns until all

VICTORIOUS DEMOCRATS.
They Celebrate Grover's Success
With Much Enthusiasm.
Ever since the magnitude of the late
democratic landslide became apparent
the local'faithful have been eager and
impatient to paint the town in becom
ing depths of Tcrmillion as mildly ex
pressive of their exuberant joy. So
when last Friday evening was announc
ed as the date for the ratification , the
enthusiastic bourbons were on hand
from all over this section of the state ,
cocked and primed for an adult blow
out.
The demonstration was inaugurated
with a torch light procession , which
was participated in by about two
hundred souls , carrying torches , trans
parencies , brooms and other et ceteras
of victory and gratification. In pay
ment of a % ager Postmaster Troth with
with a transparency occupied a con-
spicious position in the ranks. Will-
am Huber also squared a similar tran
saction by hauling Charles Hine in a
wheel barrow in the procession through
out the entire and lengthy march.
Button's band headed the procession
and provided choice music during the
entire celebration.
Following the procession was a
speecn by Uongressman iuciveignan ,
who spoke briefly from the veranda of
the Commercial hotel , and in his ac
customed strain. He was introduced
by Chairman Moore of the democratic
committee , while Representative-elect
Sheridan also occupied a seat on the
veranda beside the speaker.
At the conclusion of the address
quite a pyrotechnic display was made
from the top of the city hall. After
which caine the good , old fashioned
part of the democratic celebrations ,
over which we will draw the mantle of
charity.
In its totality the ratification was
quite a large and juicy affair.
Thanksgiving day was becomingly
observed in McCook. There was a
general closing of business houses ; and
a general slaughter of turkeys. Union
services were conducted in the Metho
dist church , Rev. D. L. McBride
preaching the sermon , which was one
of his best efforts. The Methodist
choir provided the music. The'attend-
ance was not as large as it should have
oeen aououess owing in a measure
to the inclemency of the weather.
The Wesleyan seminary proposition
should be given thorough , business-like
consideration by our people. If the
scheme commends itself as being feasi
ble , has the elements of success in it
and back of it. and is within reach of
our means , let us grasp the situation
vigorously. But let there be a full
and free understanding of what is pro
posed and of what is expected. Every
feature must be thoroughly and intelli
gently canvassed.
The library association of our city
has donated the books , book-cases , etc. ,
of the association to the public school ,
where the same have been removed.
Members reserve perpetual rights to
the use of the library. This move will
doubtless meet with the approbation
of all ; and will provide the children
with easy access to quite a library ,
which it is contemplated to enlarge as
fast as means are available.
The comet about which astronomers
have been making such a fuss lately is
declared to be without a nucleus and
envelopes , to have less density than
the vacuum of an incandescent lamp ,
and to be made up of measly little
pieces of substance. If this thing
keeps up by Saturday night it will
have been discovered that the whole
thing was a cobweb on the telescopes.
R. R. Stewart , a late arrival from
ortland , this state , has purchased the
M. Y. Starbuck farm northeast of the
cityand the residence property of A. F.
Moore in the northeastern part of
town ; $1,900 cash is the consideration
for the latter. Mr. Stewart is quite
largely interested in horses and has
commenced the building of a barn for
their accommodation.
Mr. Crawford , father-in-law of En
gineer Moore , has purchased the J. By
ron Jennings "thoroughbred stock
farm" on the Driftwood.
Practical advertisers are already re
serving space in THE TRIBUNE for

a Multitude of Friends In
Supurb Style.
The members of the McCook lodge
A. 0. U. W. gave their first annual
complimentary banquet to invited
friends and brethren in Meekers hall ,
Monday evening , and it is quite the
unanimous verdict of all present , and
the attendance was enormous , that the
affair in every particular was one of
the most delightful ever held in Mc
Cook , a pronounced and most gratify
ing success throughout , adding more
lustre to the bright enviable social re
cord of the Workmen and their indis-
pensible and inimitable co-laborers of
the Degree of Honor.
The banquet which opened at eight
o'clock was spread with great taste and
richness-and the menu was elaborate
and tempting. This feature of the
auspicious occasion was under the ex
clusive management of the Degree of
Honor , and in providing such excellent
fare for nearly three hundred guests
the ladies acquitted themselves hand
somely and are entitled to great credit.
There was amusement for all : card
playing , dancing and a wealth of chat
ty , social intercourse ; and there was
plenty of evidence to even the casual
observer that both guests and members
enjoyed the occasion highly.
Throughout the evening Prof , lleiz-
ensteiu's orchestra of six pieces made
most acceptable melody ; also providing
the inspiration for the dancing which
occupied the closing hours of the even
ing.
THE TRIBUNE wants to felicitate
everybody upon the distinct and un-
luarred success of the evening's enter
tainment. It was good to have been
there.

A rather sensational episode of the
democratic ratification of last Friday
evening was the serving upon Congress
man McKeighan , who provided the
brief oratory of the occasion , of a sum
mons to come into Squire J. E. Kelley'a
court on the 30th day of November ,
1892 , at one o'clock in the afternoon
to answer the action of "J. S. LeHew
and E. C. O'Donnell for $50 and inter
est from November 20 , ] 888 , the same
being the amount of a certain promis
sory note which was placed in the hands
of the defendant for collection and re
mittance , he being judge of Webster
county , this state , which said note was
collected by the said defendant and the
amount thereof fraudulently and felon
iously kept , embezzled and appropriated
to the use of the defendant and against
the will and request of plaintiffs. "
Sheriff Banks served the paper on the
Congressman in the cloak room of the
Commercial hotel about eleven o'clock ,
some time after the delivery of the ad
dress. The congressman stoutly main
tained that he couldn't understand it ;
that there is nothing in it ; if he puts in
an appearance on next Wednesday noon ,
however , the public may be better able
to determine whether or not there is
anything in it.

evidently did not materialize. Nobody
really thought they would.

The Wesleyan Seminary.
Dr. A. P. Welles , Rev. A. W. Coff-
man and Mr. J. A. Wilcox arrived
home from Holdrege , last Tuesday even
ing , quite hopeful of McCook's chances
of securing the location of the pro
posed Wesleyan seminary here , their
only strong-competitor for the semin
ary being Orleans , at the meeting of
trustees of the university. So ; i meet
ing of business men of our city was
held in the First National bank on
Wednesday night , to see what action
McCook people felt like taking in the
matter. It was ascertained that a
seminary building and ten acre campus
valued at $10.000 and an endowment
fund of $20,000 were required by the
trustees from the town in which the
seminary should be located.
On motion Dr. A. P. Welles , J. P.
Lindsay and F. M. Kimmell were con
stituted a committee to ascertain what
land could be secured for the purpose ,
cost etc.
Messrs. J. P. Lindsay , Rev. A. W.
Coffman and William Valentine were
appointed a committee to correspond
with Chancellor Creighton and ascer
tain just what the trustees offered and
required , in writing.
It may be added that the trustees
and Chancellor Creighton of the Wes
leyan university at Lincoln will be in
McCook on Dec. 6 and 7 to view what
McCook has to offer and to more fully
explain the unification plan under
wine : : it is proposed to ouua lour
seminaries in the state of Nebraska ,
one of which shall be in this park of the
state.
It is expected that Chancellor
Creighton will address an educational
meeting in our city on the evening of
Dec. 7.

On Wednesday morning Rev. Father
J. W. Hickey of St. Patrick's church , in
the impressive ceremony of the Catho
lic church , united in marriage Mr. John
McNeff and Miss Clara O'Neil , both of
our city , and among our most estimable
young people. THE TRIBUNE joins
their many friends and well-wishers in
hearty congratulations.
A wedding dinner was partaken of
at the residence of the bride's parents ,
after which the young people took the
train for Denver , where they are enjoy
ing a happy honeymoon for a few days.
