Said McKeighan in his acceptance speech at Ho/drege : "I mean no dis respect to the defenseless dead when I telj you that I am no democrat. " RED WILLOW count } ' can take perfectly excusable pride in re membering John C. Allen with a handsome , robust majority at the approaching election. Lo cal pride should do that. But there is the additional incent ive that he' has made the state an obliging and efficient secretary. HON. W. E. ANDREWS should receive a loyal support at the hands of Ked Willow county Re- pnblicaus , and a neat majority should be rolled up for him in No vember. Able and clean he is Worthy of your franchise , and would represent this district in congress with energy , fidelity and efficiency. ! \ H. SELBY , in speaking of John C. Gammill's chances for election , said : "At first the out look was dark enough , but as the campaign progresses it becomes brighter , until now I firmly be lieve that Mr. Gammill will be elected. Six of the eight counties will give Gammill a majority , and there is fighting chance in the other two. " THIS may be a quiet campaign but there is no testimony yet been offeied to show that the states will "Hot vote just as they did four years aga. The new states since admit ted are solidly Republican and .they will simply increase Harri- son's electoral majority. If there jis .anything substantial our demo cratic friends have to offer on that .assertion we would like to hear it. V IT is reported that a corporation -composed in part of eastern capital "Ists has been formed under the "name of the United States Beet 'Sugar company to establish a ai'ge number of sugar factories in this state. As the beefc sugar in dustry promises to become very important in Nebraska , , which offers the best advantages for it of any state in the union , there should have been no lack of local enterprise and capital to carry it on. But if the factories are built as contemplated they will give a great stimulus to beet growing and rill largely increase the volume of "business in this state. The idea of distributing a number of fac tories about the state will doubt less produce good results by en couraging the culture of beets in many localities where they are not BOW produced. The sugar factor ies d6 not employ a great number of men and do not run throughout the year , but every new one added will increase the number of wage earners. It begins to look as if Nebraska were destined to become famous _ as a sugar producing late , r - tx zy- . A PniLADELPHiANhas presentee to the museum of Independence hall the magnificent gold brocadec vest or waistcoat that his ancestoi wore once in that city in 1698. He didn't wear it again because he was arrested and heavily finec for daring to import Boston fash ions into the Quaker city , and ii was by the skin of his teeth thai he escaped having his head shavec in the good old Quaker fashion. The public executioner was order ed by the court to burn the vesl but the owner had so successfully buried f it under his cellar flooi that they had to make a return of "nou comatibus" on the writ. Ihis relic is principally interest ing as it accounts for and.fixes the date of the democratic plank that has from time immemorial adorned the party platforms , denouncing and deploring all "sumptuary laws. " The modern democrat thinks this plank to be in defense on free whiskey , but liquor regu lation laws are not "sumptuary. " But that was the hallucinationwith which Grover Cleveland was pos sessed , when he gravely repeated his warning against "sumptuary legislation" in his justly celebrat ed letter of acceptance. It stands out in bold relief in that document as the only attempt in it to launch a great principle without a string to it. On the question of sumpt uary legislation doubtless Grover thanks God that his party was not divided and he could venture to speak out. State Journal. THE cost of the Homestead strike to the state of Pennsylvania was about ยง 600,000 in wages paid the militiamen. The loss to the laboring men and to the business interests of the town of Homestead was much in excess of that sum. When the deplorable affair is under consideration it must not be forgotten that the contest was not over wages so much as over the manner in which the business of the mills * should be conducted. The strike has been declared lost , but the men who go into those big mills in the future will receive almost identically as much money per day as the workers who were employed there before the distur bance began. State Journal. No MAN who loves his land and honors his state can afford not to vote for Andrews. THE record of Senator Paddock's two terms of six years each in con gress collated by Mr. Perry Heath for the Omaha Bee was spread before the readers of The Journal in yesterday morning's issue and is worth the perusal of every Nebraska farmer and busi ness man. Senator Paddock's labors have been abundant and what is still more to the point , eminently successful. It is not a record of a lot of bills flung in and felt to shift for themselves as best they could in the rush of business , but the senator has staid with his great measures , has followed them through the senate and into the house , and the consequence of his diligence is that no man in the senate has accomplished more in the interest of the west and of the farmers of the entire country than the senator has been able .to bring about as the chairman of the committee on agriculture and as a member of other very important committees. The Journal hopes that every man in the state will see the record and read it care fully. It is a record of good work that any statesman in the ! and might well be proud of. Journal. "CONFRONTED , as we are , by a condition of affairs so appalling in ; he south that it appeals to the patriotism of every American citizen , the election of Cleveland would , all these facts aeing known , be a matter of astonishment , as it would be a practical indorsement of these ; hings , and as such would be at once the shame and danger of the republic. " Mary Lease , Populist Lecturer. D. H. WOOLEY , a prominent alliance man of Kansas , has come out for the republican ticket. He says : ' 'When I read that Georgia went democratic by 70,000 , I at once went republican by a large majority. " And many alliance men in this state are going the same way.
