THE democrats of the Fifth
Nebraska district have endorsed
McKeighan , but they have done it
in the spirit which bodes no good
to his chances of political success.

JOHN C.ALLEN , republicancandi
date for secretary of state , is one
of the most popular candidates now
before the people. Mr. AJJen has
made a grand record in the office
to which he was chosen two years
ago , proving himself a faithful and
capable public servent. He is be
sides the most genial of gentlemen ,
who makes friends of all acquain
tances. A couple of gentlemen ,
-of the name of Easterling and
Crow , will still be trudging weari-
"ly and foot-sore down the home-
rstretch , after Mr. Allen has pass
ed under the wire and retired to
the floral hall to receive the con-
.gratulations of the people.
THE phenomenal performance
on the Omaha half-mile track by
the wonderful colt
two-year-old ,
'Online , bred and owned in Nebras
ka , is the talk of the turfmen ,
- vho consider it as remarkable in
its way as the latest record of Nan
cy Hanks. The young prodigy
went amile in 2:17 on a heavy half-
mile track on three shoes , having
cast one of his hind shoes before
he had gone 100 yards. Itis only
six months since this remarkable
infant pacer was firsfc put in har
ness. He had smashed the two-
year-old pacing record before by
going amile in 2:16 on a kite-
shaped track , but under the cir
cumstances his latest performance
is far more remarkable than that.
It is predicted that with a pneu
matic-sulky and a fast track he will
do his mile in 2:10 before the end
of the season. The climate of
Nebraska seems to te favorable for
the production of fast colts , and yet
it is to be hoped that the cultiva
tion of corn and sugar beets will
not be abandoned. Bee.

THE editor of the Macon ( Ga. , )
Daily News -writes to the editor of
the New York Sun commending
the course of that journal in insist
ing that the force bill shall be
paramount issue of the present
campaign. "Even in the city of
Macon , " he says "many prominent
democrats assume antagonistic at
titudes on the tariff issue , and yet
they are a unit in their unqualified
condemnation of the most tyran
nical measure that was ever con
ceived in malice and brought forth
in hatred the force bill. "
Away with the tariff issue , there
fore ! Down with the force bill !
Down with negro domination !
