Cooley , who goes to enter the soldiers' home at that place. Mr. Cooley's health continues to grow worse , and it is thought the home would be the proper place for him in his helpless condition. A purse was raised to help pay the expenses , the matter of transportation being kindly lightened by Supt. Campbell. This week , D. C. Marsh sold a half interest in his livery establishment to Mr. M. J. Clark , father of Mrs. Ben. Bowen , of Breemer , Iowa. The new firm proposes to inaugurate some exten sive improvements at once : The barn will be overhauled and enlarged and the equipment will be strengthened and improved by the purchase of aew vehi cles and horses. In fact they propose to place the business on a thoroughly first-class basis throughout. All smokers are interested in secur ing a good , pure article of the weed when they are looking for a cigar. Purity and excellence are important and count with all who are judges of quality in tobacco. Beizenstein makes his own cigars right herein McCook. He selects none but the best tobaccos and his manu factured product cannot be equalled in the city. He carries a large stock of cigars and tobacco , besides a well select ed line of smokers' articles. It may be unnecessary , but it affords us pleasure and we will call special at tention to the article in this issue enti tled "ON THE FRONTIER. " While the writer is not pretentious , the communi cations have merit , both literary and historical , which would entitle them tea a place in a high grade magazine. In fact such magazines have recently pub lished less interesting letters on a simi lar topic. The action of the county commis sioners in advertising for bids for furn ishing board , care and clothing for coun ty charges , is a move in the right direc tion , and commendable as an economic measure , looking forward to the estab lishment and maintenance of a county poor farm , where paupers may be kept at the least expense to the county and to the producer. Doubtless the hiring of a physician by the year would prove advantageous , too. The experience of the past year , especially , teaches the tax payer the necessity of a more eco nomic way of providing for the support and rendering professional aid to the poor and sick and unfortunate. Un doubtedly , too , much money has been expended for the services rendered. This may be rectified by the plan pro posed ( and which has been suggested at various times by the publisher , ) by the commissioners , by keeping all coun ty charges , at least those entirely sup- ) orted by the county , in one place , and by hiring a physician by the year on a salary which may be increased as the commissioners see fit in case of epidem- cs or special or unusual cases. This > Ian has been in vogue for many years n older counties and has been success- 'ul. Properly handled it will beneficial o Ked Willow county. One of the jest and earliest effects will be the re- Luction of the number of mendicants and loafers who have fastened themj j elves on the charity of the people. "A short time since the cow was sad ; she scarce could lift her head , begud. Her hoofs were sore , her tail was limp ; her mane and bangs had losttheir crimp , and miles she trudged from grass to drink , with scarcely strength enough to wink. The owner , too , looked blue and glum , and cursed the cattle business some. But since the rains the grass is tall the cow can raise her head and bawl ; her hide is slick , no bones pro trude , she prances like a city dude ; her tail is sl'ck , her eyes are bright , she snorts and dares the crowd to fight. Her owner , too , digs up the chink , and asks the boys to take a drink. God bless the rain ; it makes a man feel young again. He feels like tossing up his hat and howling like a democrat. " A variety of things are necessary to make a newspaper successful , prosper ous and useful. The publisher may print the news , but his labors are in vain unless the business men give him a lib eral patronage. He may strive earnest ly to upbuild the city and country , but if the people seek rather to destroy his influence than to strengthen bis willing and unselfish hands , his work will fall short of its best results. A horse will do more service on full feed than it will on short or poor rations. So the news paperman can accomplish greater things on a generous , hearty support than he can on a niggardly take-it-out-in-trade patronage actuated by charity. On Monday morning , Father J. W. Hickey of St. Patrick's church , through the impressive ceremony of the Catho lic church , united the lives and destin ies of two of McCook's popular and es timable young people , Mr. Felix Ken nedy and Miss Mary Mullen. The wed ding was a private one , only the rela tives and a few friends being present. Mr. Kennedy is a popular employe in the Burlington shops. Miss Muljen has been the accomplished head of J. Albert Wells' dress making department for some time. THE TRIBUNE express es a very general and hearty feeling in wishing them much of this world's hap piness and prosperity. The policy of the Burlington in en couraging all efforts to induce immigra tion is exemplified in a recent letter from General Passenger and Ticket Agent Francis to William Coleman of fering transportation for him and ex hibits from Red Willow county to the Illinois and Iowa state fairs , this fall. Our farmers should note Mr. Coleman's call elsewhere for samples of corn , small grain , etc. , to be preserved for him for exhibition at Des Moines and Peoria. Red Willow should also be represented at Lincoln , this year. FOR SALE Part of my irrigated farm near McCook , in small lots to suit purchaser. Private ditch. No wat er rent. THE TRIBUNE learns that the matter of having a soldiers' reunion in Mc Cook , some time this fall , is being dis cussed , and much interest is being manifested. It is urged that the times are peculiarly propitious for such an event , particularly so in view of the fact that there will be no harvest ex cursions to this section this year , just the time when we will be best able to show the finest crops ever raised since the settlement of Western Nebraska. Perhaps there has not been a season in years when the conditions were more favorable. We hope the subject may be carefully and thoroughly canvassed , and if the sentiment warrants such a conclusion , that the work of getting up a reunion even better than that of two years ago may go ahead with enthu siasm and vigor. But , in looking over the project we must not lose sight of the fact that a first-class affair of the kind proposed means the expenditure of money freely and laborious effort beside. If we feel like undertaking it , every shoulder must go to the wheel. Let there be a full and free discussion. If it is practica ble and desirable , all well enough. If thought not so , well just drop ic. But chink it over. It is proposed , too , to hold a horse fair during the reunion , as an additional attraction. And the number of fine and speedy horses in McCook and this part of Nebraska warrants the expecta tion that this would be a strong feature , full of interest and drawing. PURE DELIGHT. There is something approaching pure delight in drawing the ribbons over a spanking , spirited team of horses pull ing a handsome and comfortable vehicle , these pleasant , cool evenings or quiet Sundays. If you want to indulge in that sort of ecstacydrop into The Circle Front Livery Barn and let them fit you up with the necessary apparatus. They have the handsomest turn-outs to be found in the Valley. Their service is prompt and their treatment courteous. Terms as reasonable as first-class ac commodations will warrant. HcCOOK , NEBRASKA. From the Galesburg Daily Mail. July 14th. The display of wheat , oats , barlev , rye and potatoes placed by J. A. Cor- deal , of McCook , Red Willow county , Neb. , at Mr. Rodgers' seed store on Main street , gives promise of a bounte ous harvest in that vicinity.
