r'S r-- - * - - - By F. M. KIMMELL. OFFICIAL CITY& COUNTY PAPER. THE Gulbertson Republican en ters its seventh year with prospects fully merited by Mr. Eisley , its energetic publisher. JUDGE J. E. COCHIIAN of McCook was a pleasant caller at this office on Tuesday. The Judge has made an excellent Judge during his term of office and is a friend of the farmer. Bonkelrnan Republican. THE expression of the Indepen dent press of the Eleventh district is highly complimentary to Judge 1 Cochran and shows that there is a strong sentiment among the new party people in favor of the Judge. THERE is a possibility that the brethren of the Valley press will not "excurt" to the mountains as resolved at a recent meeting of the association. The managers of the mountain roads can't see it in that light. WITH the defective caulking of last fall to combat , and the evident lack of confidence in party leaders resulting from the treacherous mismanagement of last fall's cam- paigH , the political prospect is not altogether inviting. THERE is not another man in the eleventh judicial district who would bring to the district bench more of the honor , dignity and qualifi cation that should belong to it than Hon. J. E. Cochran. He has been tried and has never failed to respond spend to the calls of right and justice. Benkelmau Bee ( Ind. j NEW YORK begins to lay claim to being the money center of the world. "Wheii the Barings broke down under their load of Argen- tine bonds and London was in a panic , "Wall street gave no sign of distress and helped out the finan ces of Great Britain by sending over $50,000,000 or § 60.000,000 of gold as it was wanted , without in the least disarranging its own money market. Journal. IN Brooklyn'Wednesdaya bronze statute of HenrvWard Beecher was * unveiled. It is a mark of respect and honor which the city pays to the memory of its greatest man. it is well that posterity in this way J tries to keep in touch , as it weie , with the graces and power of the illustrious dead. Henry Ward Beecher was , perhaps , the greatest pulpit orator of modern times , and by his force and ability created for himself a fame that may be more enduring than the bronze figure that has been erected to commemo rate his name. In the world of thought he was a leader and his ide.as of reform and progress have become imbedded in the literature of his country. JUDGE COCHRAN was up from McCook on Saturday last to talk with his many friends concerning his prospects for endorsement by the Independent people. He re turned well pleased with the out look , as every one in this vicinity is willing to concede that the Judge has done as much for the laboring people as the laws of our state would allow , and nearly every one is free to acknowledge that this has been done from none but hon est motives. One of our leading independents expressed himself as very strong in favor of the Judge rather than any new person for this place that he has yet learn ed of , and he further declared that he knew that speaking thus , he was expressing the sentiment of a good majority of his fellows. Stockville Faber ( Ind. ) SENATOR MANDEIISON is credited with saying in New York that Ne braska would cast her vote in the next national Kepublican conven tion for Harrison. He added that Elaine had always been strong in this stale and had many followers , but as the Maine man was not con sidered among the "possibilities , " there was no use of comparing the strength of the two men. THE writing telegraph company of New York made a practical test of their machine for transmitting words in the hand writing of the sender of the dispatch , the other day , with complete success. It will send the dispatch as rapidly as the sender can write it , as the pen connects with the instrument and the pen at the other end of the line automatically reproduces every stroke. In the test twenty-five words a minute were sent. One of the uses of the new process will be to send the latest news to the press. A little time can be saved by hav ing the message complete as copy when taken from the instrument. Journal. THE Nebraska method of assess ing property is always an impene trable mystery to the stranger within our gates. It is the cause of much misunderstanding , and there is no doubt that our credit suffers through our blundering and unequal system. The agent who is looking for a * cite for the new government building at Be- ati ice is greatly perplexed to find that property charged with an as sessment of § 2,500 cannot be bought for less than $20,000. A man from the east begins to sus pect at once that the owner is ' at tempting to play a gouge game on iim , and there is a hesitancy in naking the purchase and a good leal of misunderstanding all iround. It is generally admitted ; hat it would be better for all in- erests to raise the standard of val- mtion. It has not been possible to bring this about as yet , but ii the tax percentage could be limit ed by Jaw to a very low figure it is possible that the assessments would be forced up to the point of actual value in spite of the disin clination of the county and muni cipal boards to pay as much into the state trensury in taxes as their neighbors. The plan seems en tirely feasible , and it could be easily tried by reducing the limit of the levy gradually from time to time until a just and equitable point was reached. Bee.
