The destroying angel visited the home
of August Droll , last Friday night ,
selecting for his victim their daughter
aged about nine years , who was afflicted
with that dread scourge of humanity
diphtheria. The interment took place
on Sunday in St. Patrick's cemetery.
THE Culbertson ditch has been pur
chased by Mr. ' T. W. Pelbam who repre
sents an eastern syndicate. It is an
nounced now that they have plenty of
money to push the ditch to completion

Yehmeyer , has sent M. H. Bacon ten

tribute among those who have been
patrons of the commission man.
We direct attention to the call for a
meeting of Hocknell Hose Co. No. 1 ,
to-morrow evening. It is desired to in
crease the membership of the company ,
which at present would be unable to
cope with a fire of any dimension.
This week S. W. Sellers traded his
stock of goods to William Porter of
Wellfleet. Mr. Sellers left for North
Plattc , Tuesday , on land business con
nected with the deal. Mr. Porter is here.

THERE are 10,000 miles of irrigating
ditches in Colorado and still they are
not contented and happy. More ditches
are under construction and contemplat
ed. Nebraska will have to strike a
rapid gait to make up for lost time.
McCook must be in it , too.
We jiire informed that B. F. Troxel
has this week purchased what is known
as the Eaton ranch. It consists of 400
acres and contains the large ranch barns
and other improvements. The land is
all under the ditch and is destined soon
to become immensely valuable.
THE TRIBUNE is in favor of canning
factories , beet sugar factories , and any
and all other contemplated or proposed
enterprises , but let us < ; nail" the South
Side irrigation ditch project before we
"flush" any more enterprises. Irriga
tion established and all these things
will be added unto us. We can't keep
them away. But don't lose sight of
the all-important thing-IRRIGATION.
The taking away of Mrs. Norman
VanAuken , Tuesday , was a very sad
and sudden affair. While at the din
ner table , in unusually bright spirits ,
the summons came , and falling back in
to the arms of her husband , she expir
ed , after a momentary reviving. The
husband and children thus bereaved
with such appalling saddenness have
the heartfelt condolence and sympathy
of all true hearts. Rev. Mather offici
ated at the funeral services which were
held at the residence in West McCook ,
at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
WEDDIHG BELLS.
Tuesday of this week , Rev. William
Suess of Herndon , Kansas , spoke the
words which united for life Rev. Henry
Buettner and Miss Lucy Matson , both
of our city , the ceremony taking place
at residence of bride's parents , only
relatives and a few friends being pres
ent. The nuptial knot being securely
tied , all present sat down to enjoy the
good things spread before them with
liberal hands. The balance of the even
ing was spent in a social way , and was
enjoyed by all. The young couple will
begin house-keeping at an early date ,
with the best wishes of many friends
for a prosperous and happy life.
FEME TO HIS ASHES.
Last Sunday afternoon at Indianola
the wasted remains of poor Frank Yore
irere laid away under the sod and the
clew , awaiting the judgment day. After
years of suffering death came to his re
lief. A clever , whole-souled boy was
Frank Yore , and scores of friends were
bis ; and over them all the sad circum
stances of his prolonged illness and
gruesome death throw a deep shadow.
The obsequies at Indianola were
largely attended. Ruthven Division ,
Knights of Pythias , of our city , had
the remains in charge.

Mayor announced that he had laid off
the night policeman.
J. H. Bennett was appointed chief of
police by the Mayor , and confirmation
followed by the council. Jos. Spotts
was appointed street commissioner , but
the council unanimously declined to
confirm. The Mayor then laid off the
street commissioner.
Councilman Kay nominated J. H.
O'Neil for the office of street commis
sioner , seconded by Councilman Menard.
The Mayor declared the motion out of
order. An appeal was not allowed.
The council then adjourned far 20
minutes for much-needed refreshments.
Upon reconvening Councilman Knights
was elected president of the council.

R d Willow County Scandal.
Florence E. Dole , through her at
torneys , Messrs. Stearno & Strode , filed
a petition in the district court yester
day setting forth statements concern
ing one Thomas A. Stratton that in
volve grave charges. For the alleged
injury that the said Thomas has done
to the plaintiff the neat sum of $20,000
is asked. In the petition it is declared
that on the 16th day of Novemberl890 ,
at her home in Red Willow county , the
said Miss Dole plighted her love to
Thomas A. Stratton , who agreed to
marry her on the 18th day of May ,
1891. The plaintiff declares her wil
lingness to marry the defendant at any
time and furthermore has always been
willing to marry him since the event
ful day in November. Under this
promise of marriage the defendant is
said to have seduced the plaintiff great
ly to her injury. Afterwards on the
23d day of January the defendant re
nounced and cancelled the marriage
contract and now refuses to renew it
and marry the plaintiff. Wherefore the
plaintiff prays judgment against the
defendant for the sum of $20,000.
The plaintiff was a school teacher in
Red Willow county , and the defendant
is a citizen of Stratton , Hitchcock
county , said to be well-to-do. State

They Will Irrigate.
The Nebraska Irrigation and Improve
ment Company has filed articles of in
corporation. The headquarters of the
company are to be in this city. The
incorporators are George W. Holdrege ,
R. 0. Phillips , J. W. Deweese , Fayette
I. Foss , J. W. Shabata and W. L. Mat-
son. The object of the corporation is
to conduct a general irrigating business
in Nebraska , Colorado , Wyoming , Mon
tana , South Dakota and Kansas. Lin

ment Co. , which has just been organized
in this city , promises to do a grand work
in the development of the western part
of the state. The gentlemen behind
this enterprise have capital , experience

ENLISTED FOR THE WAR.

into this irrigation movement with an
enthusiasm born of confidence in its
magnificent promise impressed with a
sense of the great need of this section
The drawback to the enterprise baa
been the lack of capital. Out of out
despair C. H. Meeker raised us by an
nouncing that be had secured ample
means to push the South Side ditch up *
on our raising $10,000 in its aid. The
one thing needful money assured at
at a time when it was agreed practical
ly unanimously that no capitalist would
dream of investing his gold in this sec
tion , our hopes were raised to the high
est notch. But we were forgetful ol
our hosts ; and the events of the past
few weeks indicate quite clearly that
our before breakfast job now means en
listment for the war.
Like the measles and numerous oth
er annoying but not dangerous ailments
to which mankind is subject , this im
portant matter must have its run. The
captious obstructionist must have his
say. The man with an axe to grinc
must secure the desired edge. The
man-af raid-of-a-s tear must sound the
toscin. The
ferninst-bonds-on-general-
principles man must be heard. And a
thousand and one other escape valves
must operate before we Americans can
get down to business.
But after all these preliminaries'HE
TRIBUNE expects our good hard busi
ness sense to assert itself and prevail.
Mr. Meeker has a valuable water right
and money to construct the ditch , with
the aid asked. He will give proper
guarantees to the proper parties at the
right time. The success of the ditch
and the value of the many thousands
which will be invested besides the
amount of bonds asked are alone most
powerful incentives , which will , more
than bonds requiring the pound of flesh ,
guarantee a ditch of sufficient dimen
sions and water of sufficient volume.
The means employed to render profit
able the additional $30,000 or $40,000
required to complete the ditch will
doubtless protect the $10,000 in bonds
required.
SECRETARY OF STATE.
The secretary of state has five com
modious and cheerful rooms on the
sunny side of the capitol , occupying
the west side of the south wing and a
part of the south side of the west wing.
In the south room John C. Allen of
McCook is to be found at all times dur
ing working hours , from 8 to 4 o'clock.
In addition to the prescribed duties of
secretary of state he is ex-pfficin a mem
ber of the board of public lands and
and buildings , board of transportation ,
board of educational lands and funds ,
printing board , board of purchase and
supplies , board of pharmacy and can
vassing board. These take up a maj
or portion of his time , so that the rou
tine duties of the secretary fall mainly
upon his deputy. For all of his work
he gets $2,000 per annum. Journal.
