Chicago on important railroad business.

Engineer S. Munson severed his con
nection with the Great and only Burlington
Route , April 30th.
Tom Wilkinson is in the city , this week
assisting on the pay roll work in the Super
inteiident's office.
Engineer B. H. Douglass is pulling pass
enger between Red Cloud and Oxford , for a
few days , with engine 229.
Engineer Finch , at Denver , is resting fif
teen days , by special request , for breaking
up some cars at Irondale.
No. 4 , Tuesday , had a tourist sleeper with
twenty-one passengers destined for Chicago
from Pacific Coast points.
Engineer J. V. O'Connell has been laid up
for several days with the prevailing disease ,
la grippe , but is out again.
W. H. Craig , fireman , went to Hastings ,
this week , in search of an ice cream suit to
wear when he goes calling.
The special train of Jay Gould's , made the
run from Council Bluffs to Chicago , 492 >
miles , in exactly ten hours.
Engine 76 went out on construction , this
week , and will help in laying 15 miles of new
iteel on Mascot Hill and vicinity.
Engine 209 broke a side rod pin , this week ,
and the way the steel side rod was twisted
up was a caution. No one hurt.
Word reaches us from Alliance that Mr.
and Mrs. Fred. Harris are the fond parents
of a bouncing twelve-pound girl.
W. Pennington , representing the Galena
Oil Co. , of Franklin , Pa. , was a visitor at
McCook headquarters , this week.
W. J. Keenan , of the C. , B. & N. traffic de
partment , spent Wednesday night in the
city visiting his sister , Mrs. C. M. Noble.
Engineer C. A. Dixon brought his engine
: o McCook , for repairs , and made a short
visit to Plattsmouth while the engine was
[ aid in.
Engineer John Mullen attended a meeting
of the Burlington Voluntary Relief Depart
ment Advisory Committee held in Chicago

Alfred Magers a C. , B. & Q. baggageman ,
has been arrested and plead guilty of rifling
packages committed to his charge which
contained money and jewelry.
A lively rate war is expected daily between
; he S. F. and D. &R. G. on Colorado South
Park and Denver business , and of long dur
ation such as spoken of in Denver.
Chief Dispatcher on the D. , O. & P. visited
McCook , forepart of past week , and was
greatly astonished at the general appearance
of the only town between the River and the
Rockies.
M. J. Mann and wife of Woodville , N. H. ,
are the guests of Engineer and Mrs. San-
born. Mr. Mann is a passenger conductor
and a brother of Hon. E. F. Mann , superin
tendent Concord & Montreal railroad.
No. 13 being late , Tuesday , the Kansas
City and St. Louis cars were token through
special. The train consisted of 3 cars and
Engineer Burnett with 212 pulled the train
from Oxford to Denver in the fast time of
7 hours , the distance being SOO miles.

red to Lincoln from McCook , where he will
have charge of all messengers on the main
line from Hastings east. Mr. Wetzel will
be succeeded by Mr. Dawson from the

A. G. Dole , the silver-tongued reformer of
ndianola , and his daughter , were among the
guests of the commercial centre , Monday.
Mrs. A. McG. Eobb , who has been the
guest of her sister , Mrs. L. B. Stiles , since
Tuesday , departed for Omaha , this evening.
Commissioner Hodgkin and Doctor Hath-
orn and Banker Frost and family enjoyed
he hospitality of the metropolis , Wednesday.
Squire Fisher and Doc Doty were down
rom the Falls , Monday , on a general trading
xpedition. They left for Wauneta , Tues-
ay morning.
Dr. B. B. Davis was summoned to Arapahoe -
hoe , Tuesday evening , by K. J. Finch , whose
son is seriously ill with an attack of malig
nant diphtheria.
John H. Powers of Culbertsou , the mild-
mannered old gentleman who headed the in
dependent ticket , last fall , and president of
the Nebraska Alliance , was a city visitor ,
Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Garrard have the pro
found sympathy of all in the death of their
little child , Wednesday. Eev. Mather con
ducted the funeral services at the residence
on upper Main Avenue at 10 o'clock , this
morning.
Secretary of State Allen has appointed
Miss Gertrude H. Laws , daughter of ex-Con
gressman Laws , to fill the clerkship which
will be vacated May 1st by the promotion of
Charles C. CaldweJl to the deputy secretary
ship. Lincoln Journal.
Mrl and Mrs. W. D. Paine and Mr. and
Mrs. C. W. Paine and family , who have been
iving in Elgin , 111. , for a number of months
> ast , returned to McCook , Tuesday , receiv-
ng a very warm welcome from their many
friends in this city.
Capt. Thos. Fitzgerald , wife and brother-
n-law , have been spending part of the week
n the city on their way home to Marine City ,
Michigan , from visiting in California. The
captain is an asthmatic and finds this a more
helpful climate than that of California.
John F. Majors came in from Cheyenne ,
Wyo. , Sunday evening , and has been spend-
ng the week with the family here. He has
) een transferred to Minnesota for special
work and his headquarters will be in Duluth ,

his new location yesterday.
