THE Illinois legislature is wrest

STATE funds on hands amount
to a million and a half dollars ,
onerfourth of the sum being in
the general fund.
THE legislature and supreme
court of Nebraska have struck up
quite an intimate acquaintance.
'jDheir joint sessions are frequent
and interesting.
SPRINGFIELD , S. D. , has an
artesian well of eight-inch bore ,
which yields 2,500 gallons of wat

COLORADO is rich in mines of
every description. It Las not a
foot of naturally arable land. And
yet its agricultural product in 1890
surpassed in value the output of all
its mines. Irrigation did it.
INGALLS lias fallen

Judge Peffer , editor of the "Farm
ers Alliance" has been elected to
succeed him by a vote of 101 to
58. And all JJourbondom is shaken
with ghoulish glee.
No intelligent observer can fail
to note the inquietude and unrest
that prevades the popular mind ,
and that these alarming evidences
of abnormal relations of the classes
deserves careful attention of states
man none will deny.
THE lower house has passed a
resolution expressing the sense of
the house that the United States
senators should be elected by the
people , and instructing the Ne
braska delegation in Congress to
take the necessary steps for ac
complishing this result.
THE speeches made by Senator
ELoontz and Representative Kug-
gles before the irrigation conven
tion were of a decidedly conserva
tive and reasuring sort , indicating
that the fears of radical results
from the present legislature are
more or less groundless.
TEXAS has a permanent school
fund of $5,000,000 , and back of
this there are public school lands
to the amount of 8,000,000 acres.

SAYS the St. Louis Globe-Deni-
ocrat : Thirty soldiers , including
three officers , have been killed and
forty wounded during the present
Indian disturbance. This implies
a loss to the country that should
at least be avenged by compelling
the Sioux to go to work and earn
their own living.
SENATORS who have succeeded
themselves during the past few
weeks are Teller of Colorado , Cam
eron of Pennsylvania , Yoorhees of
Indiana , Jones of Arkansas , Platt
of Connecticut , Squire of Wash
ington , Vest of Missouri and
Mitchell of Oregon. And there
has been no mistake made in any
case.

"I HAVE been figuring some on
this contest matter , " said a state
house employe who has a head for
figures , "and I am dumbfounded.
There are 6,000 type written
pages of evidence , each page con
taining 500 words , or a total of
1,800,000 words. A fast reader
can average 150 words a minute.
At that rate it will require 12,000
minutes , or 200 hours , to hear the
evidence read. The legislature
sits , on an average , five hours a
day. The total daily expenses of
the house is § 1,030 , or § 207.20
an hour. Two hundred hours at
§ 207.20 an hour equals § 41,440 ,
the total expense to the taxpayers
of the state in hearing the evi
dence , providing the legislature
sits five hours each day. If it sits
ten hours a day it will cost § 20,720
to hear the evidence. "
SECRETARY WINDOM of Treasury

when the sad news reached the cap

SECRETARY WINDOM favors the

distribution of pension funds , on ,

The mathematical fiend has recently
been at work upon a calculation of the
work performed bj the human heart.
His calculations are curious and give
'the work of the heart in miles and beats.
It is based upon the presumption that
the heart beats sixty times each minute ,
and throws blood nine feet. Comput
ed ihustlic , mileage of the blood through
tin- body might be taken at 207 yards
per minute , 7 miles per hour , 168 miles
per day , 51,320 miles per year , or
4,202,400 miles in a lifetime of seven
ty years.

A CITY LUXURY.
Just as the city looks to the country for most of the luxuries used
on its tables , so the country must turn to the city for those convert- '
iences which are justly termed luxuries for the hard-working house
wife. City housekeepers have learned to realize that to save time is to
lengthen life.
is one of the best known city luxuries and each time a cake is used
an hour is saved. On floors , " tables and painted work it acts like a
charm. For scouring pots , pans and metals it has no equal. IF YOUR
STOREKEEPER DOES NOT KEEP IT YOU SHOULD INSIST
UPON HIS DOING SO , as it always gives satisfaction and its immense
sale all over the United States makes it an almost necessary article to
any well-supplied store. Everything shines after its use , and even the
children delight in using it in their attempts to help around the house.
