THE farmers -"are in the saddle. " AFTER November -ith McKei- glian's name will be spelled with five letters : P-a-ii-t-s ! Now that the site for the fail- has been settled upon the next thing to consider might be the fare for the sight. THE Kearney Enterprise has merged into the Journal , and the "hyphenated publication now has .E. M. Cunningham a veteran edi tor of Kearney , at the helm. JUDGE MASON opens the repub lican campaign at Hastings the 20th. John C. Watson and John HJ. "Webster speak the same day at Fremont and Geo. Hastings at Be atrice. IN THE census of 1880 there -were twenty-one cities with a popu lation of 100,000 and over. The present census shows an increase of eleven , making thirty-two cities Iiaving 100,000 or more people. IT IS not slander nor campaign abuse to publish truths about a candidate which render him unfit ior the office he seeks. It is a painful duty and is being heroic ally performed by the republican press of the Second district. York 'Times. THE Palisade Times has been purchased by .John Dyer , who has converted it into an independent paper and changed the name to the sonorous sounding "American Patriot. " This leaves Hitchcock county with but two Republican .newspapers , both of them being published in Culbertson. THE man who gave Governor L. D. Richards employment on a pile driver lives in Chase county. He is Mr. G. "W. Peck , of 5-38 , one of our county's most substantial farm ers. He says our future governor .was a pale , slender lad , apparently mot strong enough for the work , therefore Mr. Peck tried to favor .Mm , but he asked favors of nobody , and worked as hard as any one. That's the kind of a man Lucius D. Richards is , manly , hardwork ing and honest. Imperial Repub lican , .THE nomination of Mr. Dorsey means a red-hot campaign in the Third congressional district. - His success in the convention is large ly due to federal office holders. Two years ago he declared that he "would not stand for re-election and a good many republicans had tak- 6U him at his word , but the very acrimonious warfare that has been jnadeupon him personally , coupled with the 'fact that the opposition is divided , , have doubtless prompt ed Mr. Dorsey to re-enter the field and make the fight. The respon sibility for the outcome will be ivith him. Bee. IT HAS come to be a proverb that a "prophet is not without honor save in his own country. " So in politics it sometimes happens that "home candidates" fail to receive merited endorsement. THE TRIB UNE points with pride , however , to the fact that Red "Willow county has not been among that class. This county and city have been repeatedly honored at the hands of state , congressional and minor con ventions , and the nominees have received splendid endorsements at the polls. Allowing for the fact that all public men have personal as well as political enemies , our present nominee on the state tick et , Mr. J. C. Allen , will not lack the customary endorsement , which , together with the enthusiastic sup port being given him by the trav eling men of Nebraska , will doubt less place him at the head of the ticket , when the pluralities are sum mod up in November. WORK is now being pushed on the new irri utin'r ditch to bring O O O the water of the Frenchman river to Culbertson in Hitchcock coun ty. The canal is twenty-five feet wide at the bottom and four feet in depth. 'It will water an enor mous tract of land , and do it in time to allow two or three counties out in the valley of the Republican to bring in exhibits of farm pro ducts raised under irrigation to the state fair next year. It will proba bly be necessary to make a special provision for crops of this class , as other western counties would stand little show in a competition with irrigated land , especially if the season proves unfavorable. The construction of this canal will distribute many thousands of dollars lars among the farmers of Hitch cock county and help them through the winter nicely. It is possible to build similar ditches in several counties in the western part of the state , and it ought to be done this year if the work is to be underta ken at all. Journal , WHILE the public is still mar veling over Salvator's wonderful performance in running a mile in l:35i : , there are a few who have , through comparison and analysis , sought to realize what a terrific burst of speed this is. It is near ly forty miles an hour a. rate averaged by very few of our fast est railway trains. There are 5- , 280 feet in a mile , so that for every one oJ these ninety-five seconds for every beat of a man's pulse this wonderful horse covered fifty- five and three-tenths feet of ground. The shortest space of time noted by the turfman's watch is a quart er of a second an interval so brief that the eye can hardly observe , the mind can hardly appreciate it Tetin every one of those 382 quart ers of a second that "magnificent creature leaped sixteen and three- tenths feet. Such is the amazing results of careful breeding as ex hibited in the American race horse. Is the human race improving in the same ratio ? Scarcely. WHEN the republican orators of Nebraska unfurl their banners at the opening of the campaign next Saturday in three different cities in the state , it will be time for the alleged reformers of professional parties to commence to try to talk sense. Their visionary statements , in which they have indulged , .are good enough to talk to marines , but there are some solid questions of common sense which they will be obliged to answer. The repub lican party has never yet been de feated in the state , and Saturday night's starter will be a guaranty that itwill not "be defeated this year : Bee. - ' ' ' CONGRESSMAN FLOWER of New York gays he can't help' admiring Tom Reed.
