culpably dishonest.
Speaking of the dishonesty of medi
cal mon reminds us that only tho past
week thero has como under our personal
observation a form of dishonesty which
is almost too mean for narration.
It is generally known that doctors
bind thcmsolvcs by codes , resolutions
and oaths not to use any advertised med
icines. Now , there is a medicine on the
market which , for the paBt ten years ,
has accomplished a marvelous amount
of good in the euro of Kidney and Liver
diseases , and diseases ansing from the de
rangement of these great organs. we re
fer to Warner's Safe Cure. So wide spread
are tho merits of this medicine that the
majority of tho doctors of this country
know from actual evidence that it will
cure Advanced Kidney Disease , which
is but another name for Bright's Dis
ease.
ease.Tho medical profession have put them
selves on record as admitting that there
is no euro for this terrible jnalady , 3'et
thero are physicians base enough and
dishonest enough to procure Warner's
Safe Curejn a surreptitious manner.put

and charge their patients S2.00 per vial ,
when a sixteen-ounce bottle of the rem
edy , iu its original package can bo
bought at any drug store in tho world
for $1.25.
Perhaps tho doctor argues that the
cure of the patient justifies his dishon
esty , j'et he will boldly stand up at the
next county medical meeting and de
nounce Warner's Safe Cure as a patent
medicine , and one which he cannot and
will not use.
Tho fact is that tho people aro waking
up to tho truth that tho medical profes
sion is far from honest , and that it does
not possess a monopoly of wisdom in
the curing of disease , doctoring the
many symptoms of kidney disease , in
stead of striking at the seat of disease
tho kidnc3's themselves , allowing pa
tients to die rather than use n remedy
known to be a specific , simply because
it has been advertised , and when pa
tients are dead from Advanced Kidney
Disease , still practicing deception by
giving the cause of death i their cer
tificate as pneumonia , dropsy , heart
disease , or some other accompau3iug
effect of Bright's Disease.
All this is prima facie evidence of in
competency , bigotr3 * and dishonesty.
Wo speak but the truth when wo say
that Messrs. H. H. Warner & Co. have
done a most philanthropic work for the
past ten 3Tears in edncating the people
up to the knowledge they now enjoy ,
especially of maladies growing out of
diseases of tho Kidne3s and Liver , and
are deserving of all praise for their hon
esty and straightforwardness in expos
ing shams and dishonesty of all kinds.
Mrs. Palmer , wife of the new ' minister to
Spain , is worth $7.000.000.

How Time-Tables Are Made.
A railroad time-table , governing the
running of trains on an > T road of consid
erable length , is one of the most import
ant things in the management. The
preparation of such a table is a ve in
genious as well as critical bit of work.
The means employed are of the simplest
sort common pins and spools of colored
threads , in connection with a big sheet
of drawing-paper mounted on an easel.
This paper is called a time chart
The chart is ruled either for two , five
or ten minutes' time by horizontal lines
and perpendicular cross lines. The
"time" is marked above the horizontal
lines and the distances or stations and
terminals down the first perpendicular
line. For illustration , 12 midnight is
tbe mark on the first horizontal line and
each hour is marked until the twenty-
forth or the following midnight hour is
reached on the last horizontal line.
Between the hour lines the space is
divided into minutes and graduated as
fine as desired. On a two-minute chart
the space between the hours is divided
into ten minutes' time , and the ten min
utes' time into two minutes' time. The
hour lines are made heavy and the lesser
time lines are of a lighter shade to dis-
| tinguish them.
One terminus of the road is marked on
the lirst line beside the first time mark ,
, 12 midnight The other stations follow
, down the perpendicular line until the
other terminal is reached. Theu all is
read3r to prepare for the running ar
rangement , provided the pins and thread
. are read3 * .
A blue thread means a passenger train ,
a red thread a freight train , and if the
trains of other roads use part of the track
they are designated by a different colored
thread.
It is calculated that the running time
shall be say twenty-five miles an hour ,
and , for the purpose of illustration , the
tracing of one passenger train will
answer the purpose of explaining them
all.
all.A
A passenger train leaves the first sta
tion sa\T at 8 a.m. A pin is placed on
the horizontal line at the 8 a.m. time
mark and the end of the blue thread fast
ened thereto.
If the train runs without stopping for
fifty miles the blue thread is stretched
over opposite the station at which the
stop ist made , and directly under the 10
a.m. time-mark another pin is stuck and
the blue thread wrapped about it to keep
it taut.
If this is a stop sa3T of forty minutes
the blue thread is stretched to the 10.40
a.m. mark on a drect line with the same
station and another pin stuck and blue
thread wrapped.
Th train starts and its entire course
is thus timed and distributed along the
road.
If the railroad has many passenger
and freight trains running daily , the
time chart , when it is completed , looks
like a great 'spider's web stretched with
pins. But little work then remains to
transfer the time and stations to the time
table and the schedule is ready for the
printer.
The Eccentric Bird.
Take a cork of good size for the body
of the bird and cut two matches of equal
length for the legs. A third match , cut
shorter , will serve for the neck. Slake
the head of a piece of bees-wax or bread
rolled into u. ball and sharpen a match
end into a beakusing bright glass beads
' Tor the eyes. Take a long feather for
the tail and two shorter ones for the
t wings. Cut a large cork in half fasten
| the legs in the rounded side , making a
stand for comical bird , which may be
varied in many ways by the addition of
F atage. Mtamps ef the Worltt.
There are about 0,000 different de
criptions of postage stamps in existence.

that mark his business career.
He'grows'in wealth , in position , and

"What was it , luck , or pluck that made
the manr * Look within , 3'oung clerks in
some far-off country store , and find the
answer. Your ownheart will tell 3'ou
that luck did not do it Why not climb
the same way through duty nobly done ?
Oh , it is royal to climb through truth ,
and honor , and right. There is a glow
in this exercise that kindles a new fire in
the e3'e and a new enthusiasm in the
heart. Life broadens out into high en
deavor and the world becomes a theatre
for grandest achievements. Young man ,
resolve to climb , be brave of heart and
stong of will and pause not until you
win the prize.
A 'Sew Puzzle.
Scores of people in this town , sa3's a
New York correspondent , are. engaged
in driving pigs. They are not setting up
an opposition to P. D. Armour. Their
pigs are not real ones , but only little
round balls that reprepresent pigs , and
they are sometimes as persistent in go
ing the wrong way as the leanest of
of "hazel-splitters" in Southern Illinois.
The pig-drivers are merely trying to
solve the "pigs in the clover" puzzle.
This puzzle is the most popular thing in
town. Two or three weeks ago several
street venders came on shouting about
the "pigs in tlie clover" puzzle. The

puzzle itself seemed to have little re
semblance to real pigs in a clover patch ,
but the man who invented it seemed to
think that was as good a name as any.
n After the first day or two the street
venders- a bigjbusiness with the puz
zle. It became popular , and it is now
almost impossible to walk the streets
without seeing a half dozen men offer
ing the puzzle for sale. The trick to
accomplish is to get three of the little
balls into the centre "pen , " or "clo
ver , " by turning the puzzle with one
hand. It has already made its appear
ance in Chicago , and will reach the
small towns in due time.

The way to get acquainted with a
dog , says Our Dumb Animals , is this :
"Put out your hand easily and confi
dently to the dog , so that he may smell
it Put it to his nose. If he sniffs at *
it and wags lus4ail-or-otberwjse
friendliness then you ma3 * speak to him
and pat him on the head if 3ou like , and
perhaps use other familiarities ; but if ,
when you offer your hand , the dog re
mains sullen and passive , the sooner you
take away 3'our hand the better. Never
approach a strange dog with either
timidity or menace ; but , as we have
said , the best way is to let all strange
dogs alone , and get any desired informa
tion about them from those , who have
the honor of their personal friendship. "

It was Mr. T. B. Marshall , a Penns3'l-

"Have yon received yonr § 5,000 yet ? "
inquired a reporter for the Blade , who

"Yes , I received it a week after the
drawing , and it came in a draft through
the KetcTiamV'NatioiiaKBank.
"I had purchased ticket No. 10,420 ,
and immediately after the drawing .was
notified that I had drawn the neat little
sum of $5,000 , and that it would be im
mediately forwarded to me.
"I drew it from the bank , took as
much as I wanted for my immediate

the bank. No , I have no particular
