More or lessjjentlo n rlcultural reader , if you have n farm in Nebraska , stay on it. Freeze to it like death to a colored geutemnn ! of the male persuasion. There isn't a better country from Greenland's icy mountains to India's coral strand , and if you hold a chunk of land in it you are very fortunate , even though you have to eat com pone and salt pork every day for lack of gold to buy spongo cake and breaded veal. There are a good many farmers In this world of ours who would like mi . ; hty well to have some salt pork and corn bread. Some of them are liv ing on the pure air and freedom to a large extent. Now and then you will encounter a husbandman of this fair state of ours who is greasing his pretty green wagon and harness ing Ids pale sorrel horses ptepaiatory to a trip to Oklahoma. Ho will wisely look at his neighbors and tell them what a smooth country this Oklahoma is ; how a poor man can go there and dig a hole in the giound and be rich before morning ; how he can plant dried apples and raise an orchard. And if the neighbors are credulous they may fol low him. But this wise man will go there and measure off a chunk of land , and the chances are that some intellectual settler will come over with a shot gun and establish a lead mine in ids person. Practical jokes of that kind are considered necessary to create friendly feeling in a new country. If the wise man escapes dying with his boots on he will necessarily be kept busy beguiling the wolf away from his door until he can raise a good crop which can't be done inside of two years even if providence be smiling ' all the time. And the chances are that the wise man will eventually come hoofing it homo to Nebraska knee deep in the dust of a country road , and breathing harsh invectives against himself at every step. That will be merely the repetition of a story as old as the western country. As between a sure thing and a doubtful it is always best to choose the foim- er. The industrious man can always do well in Nebraska , but if he chases strange and re fractory gods he is liable to be seen in the gray dawn of a wintry day carrying the ban ner and looking for a turnip to keep soul and body together. At the work of gathering moss the rolling stone is not a success. Top ics. ALL FOR NEBRASKA. Some business men seem to be incapable of appreciating the fact that every good local paper does a town ten times as much good as it is paid for. Men having large interests in a town and deeply concerned as to its pro gress , often try to see how little they can do for their own local paper. The papers of Ne braska are to-day doing more for the good of their state than they receive credit for. Day after day and week after week they are tell ing of its advantages and its progress. The facts which they give are widely published in other papers , and thus the work is carried far beyond their immediate circle of readers. If the merchants and business men of the community could know as publishers dohow constantly the columns of their local papeis are advertising them abioad and adveitisiug it to great advantage so far from taking credit to themselves in the patronage which they extend , as if they were making a dona tion , they would double and triple their sup port , assuming that in all cases they were getting a handsome equivalent for the money expended. Headache Relief. The editor of a medical journal claims that he lias used a ceitain treatment for headache for a j ear or so with lemarkable sucess. It is a solution of the bisulphide of carbon , two or three drams of which are poured on a sponge placed in a wide mouthed , glass stop pered bottle. When occasion for its use oc- cuis the mouth of the bottle is to be applied to the temple , or as near as possible to the seat of pain , so closely that none of the vola tile vapor may escape , and retained there four or five minutes or longer. It may be leapplied several times during the day , and it geneially acts like magic , giving immedi ate relief. Neivous headaches are the ones to which it is especially adapted. Neuralgic , periodic and hysterical headaches , and even many kinds of dyspeptic headaches are al most invaiiably lelieved by it. But it must be understood that the remedy is for the symptoms and not the cause , the theory be ing that vapor being absorbed through the skin produces a sedative effect upon the biipeiticial nerves ol the parts to which it is applied.
