" Now if it is a fact that thoy aro doing their duty , then Mr. Carson , ( whoso article appeared in TnE Tribune a few weeks ago ) failed woe fully in his. When Mr. Ncttleton called upon him to go for tho doctor bo should bavo Insisted on a cash advance or ample security before even leaving his bed. Then after finding that ho could not secure tho services of a physician without cash or an ironclad note , should have returned to Mr. Ncttleton and had himself se cured boforo entering into auy contract with tho doctor. The fact that Mrs. Ncttleton was liable to die , while all this red tape was being manu- factuied , ( being a secondary consideration ) should not have been allowed to cut any flguro in tho case until tho money part of the busi ness wns satisfactorily settled. It may be , however , that thero is an under lying truth in the Gazette's remarks , as it is a fact thatslnco tho adoption of "Our New Plan" the undertaking business of McCook has been gradually falling off. Thero is some sickness and occasionally a death , but where the patient is possessed of a reasonably good constitution and a clear conscience , having nothiugto con tend with but tho disease , ho Invariably re covers. Of tho deaths , a few have means at hand to secure tho services of a physician who will cheek them off according to law and the rules of refined society , but those whom pov erty compels to dispenso with all superfluous luxuries must be content with tho verdict , "Died a natural death for want of proper med J. cal attention" of a coroner's jury , and letitho county pay the bill. * In the conclusion , I would suggest a change of professional title for the doctors of Mc Cook , the "M.D. "being too indefinite. "Money Down" may mean cash in advance or pay when the work is done. But C.S.I. A. ( cash strictly in advance ) would admit of no such misconstruction. • S. C. * ELECTRIC BITTERS. . GENERAL ITEMS. o It is astonishingly sad and nevertheless true , a very small percentage of the population of our beautiful and promising city attend relig ious worship on Sunday. We aro sorry to lose our most esteemed neighbor. Dr. Demay , who will remove for the present to Cedar Bluffs and go East In the fall. He has rented both of bis claims. Our best wishes for a bright and prosperous future will follow the Doctor in his new Held of ac tivity. The rain has filled all hearts with joy , and especially that of the farmera , to whom it is a very important factor in the matter of crop raising. But while the farmer is raising pro duce , lei us encourage the establishment among uso of industries which will open a good and profitable outlet for that produce. Plenty of capital lying idle in the east , which might find a very promising field for invest ment in manufacturing enterprises. Soon the citizens of McCook will be called upon to fill vacancies in the city offices and school. Let all unite upon good men ; and in the question of school matters the greatest care should be had to select school officers and teachers who will promote the intellectual culture of our young population in a way un surpassed by any other city west of Lincoln. How sad it is to see so much ignorance around us amid such schools as we have in this great country education in the right way is power , prosperity and happiness , but'ignorance is. weakness , misery and sin. The pulpit is the last place where it should appear , and yet how much of it is in our country churches. Reporter. ' IS CONSUMPTION CURABLE ? Read the following : Mr. J. H. Morris , New ark , Ark. , says : "Was down with Abscess of Lungs , and friends and physicians pronounced me an Incurable Consumptive. Began taking Dr. King's New Discovery for on3umption , am now on my third bottle , and able to ovei- seo tho work on my farm. It is the finest medicine ever made. " • lessc Middleware , Decatur. Ohio , says : "Had it not been for Dr. King's New Dscovery for Consumotion I would have died of Lung troubles. Was given up by doctors. Am now in best of health. " Try it. Sample bottles free , at A. McMillen's drug store. BARTLEY BOOMINGS. o Rev. I. N. Clover has returned from his trip to Omaha. * i Mr. L. VanDelinder was an interested listen er nt thdebate. . The excellence of Wm. Hanlein's speech is the talk of thetown. C. T. Brewer , of McCook , was present at the debate , last Friday .evening. G. W. Gricnier is hero making arrangements for the erection of the machine shop. C.L.Knowles is having an addition built to his houso. Gossard & Chrysler are doing the work. Mrs. Andrus is enjoying herself , this fine weather , whirling through our streets on a now tricycle. And again it is a girl , and Rev. Boswell goes around calling himself Papa just to hear how it will sound. The hall was so crowded , last Friday even ing , that some of the people could not get in and had to go home. On last Friday evening , at College Hall , was held a joint discussion between members of the High School at IndianoUund the Hermes- ian society at Bnrfl , ey ! The question ui-der discussion was Re qlved , 'That Knowledge is of Greater use to an Orator than Art. " The de- bators from "Indianola having the choice chose the negative and were represented by Messrs. Goddard and JMcKillip and Misses Welborn and Wilcox. The Hermc'ian was re- preseiifd by Messrs. Han'ein , Unckfer and Piper and Miss C. Alley. The welcome ad dress by Miss Lena Beck was a beautiful pro duction am' well presented. After singing by the Herraesian , prayer was offered bv Rev. Chapln of Cambridge , followed by music , af ter which the debate was formally opened by Wm. Hanleln. The speeches all bore evidence of thoughtful preparation mid were well de livered. The judges after careful deliberat ir n gave their verdict in favor of tho affirmative. After the debate tho audience wus entertained by a male quartette which sing. "Slop Ycur Mcimncs.
