stamps were the.first issue of the 2 cent ,

known as the missionary stamps , and
were issued about 1839. There are only
two other specimens known to be ex-

letters and saved as curiosities by the
finder till the New York dealers , hear
ing of the find , offered first $50 for the
three , but gradually raised the price ,
finally offering $600 for the three , tak

How Much a Frog Knows ,
From Forest and Stream.
Toads , in the presence of snakes ,
usually remain perfectly still. In
this is their only safety , for did they
make the least movement they
would immediately be caught. I
have known a hungry snake lie wait
ing over an hour for a frog to move ,
and even push with the nose to stir
him up. This has been called "snake
charming" and indeed it looks like it ,
but the toad is the charmer , the
snake the charmee.
I remember one day I dropped a
toad in the midst of a pit of snakes
I had in my back yard. He at once
became perfectly still , though sur
rounded by more than a dozen hun
gry snakes. There was a circle of
fierce heads and glaring eyes around
him , and he would not move. The-
circle.narrowed-until the protruding
tongue almost touched him , yet he
was immovable. Just then I was
called away for over an half hour ,
but on returning found the toad in
grave dignity , still holding the fort
by most masterly inactivity. This
lowly helpless creature , strong only
by adherence to a natural faith , thus
baffling enemies numerous and pow
erful , brought Daniel before the men
tal vision , more vividly than Riviere's
celebrated picture.

Things Worth Itewemberlnr.
To those who nro called upon to
nurso the sick through a long and
severe illness , it is of tho utmost im
portance , not only to themselves ,
but also to their patients , that their
own health should bo preserved and
their own strength maintained *
And this not only through the
critical stage , but also during tho
period of convalescence.
The following simple precautions
will aid in preserving health and
strength while nursing the sick : If
the disease of the patient be such as
to cause any marked odor of the
breath , or exhalations from the
skin , take care always to sit on that
side ofthe bed or sick person which is
opposite to or away from the direc
tion wilich the effluvia will take to
ward the window or whatever other
drafts tho room may aflord. Sit so
their breath is carried away from
you. Do not sit too close to them
nor take their breath if you can avoid
it. To keep one's strength in a case
of prolonged care and anxiety , and
particularly so if obliged to sit up
nights , great benefit will be derived
from taking a warm bath early in
the morning and putting on fresh un
dergarments every otkei evening ; or
if the malady be very infections in its
nature , it is best to change the cloth-
ingevery morning. It will be found
that the wann bath , followed by a
brisk rubbing of tho whole body
with a very coarse towel or flesh
brush , will refresh the tired person
almost as much as sleep.
It is well to keep up the appetite
with small doses of quinine two to
five grains twice a clay , and eat
nourishing food , with a little wine oc
casionally. This is a way in which a
lady who makes nursingher business ,
keeps herself well and strong. 1 give
the directions as she gave them to
me , hoping they may possibly bene-
fit some one , as may also the follow
ing incident , which was related to
me by our family physician. Being
called upon to visit a sick child , he
found the babe in apparently good
health , but crying and struggling
continually as though suffering ex
treme pain and anguish. The moth
er stated that the child was desirous
of nursing continually , and in order
to quiet it , she had been obliged to
let it nurse as oiten as the crying
paroxysms came on. When that
failed to quiet it , paregoric or sooth
ing syrup had been administered.
• 'When did you give the babe a
drink of water last ? " inquired the
physician.
"I don't remember , " replied the
mother , "I seldom let him drink any
water. Does he need it ? ' '
"Need it ? " exclaimed the doctor.
"Why should he not need it as much
as you ? The child is suffering from
thirst , nothing more. "
He accordingly called for cold wa
ter , gave the infant a fewtablespoon-
fuls , and it immediately ceased cry
ing and fretting and soon went peace
fully to sleep , enjoying a long , re
freshing slumber , the first for many
hours. Mothers and nurses should
remember this. Infants who nurse
may often suffer torment for the lack
of a drink of water. Often a child
cries from nothing but thirst ; there
fore use common sense , and insteadof ,
dosing it with poisonous compounds
give the little sufferer tfll the water
he wants. Portland Transcript ,

Col Wintcrsmith Tells a Snake Story.
Col. Dick Wintersmith listened with
apparent good-natured disgust to
some of the snake stories which the
youngsters were trying to crowd
down his throat the other eveningat
Chamberlain's , says the Dallas News.
As yarn after yarn was unwound by
the enterprising narrators the colon
el seemed to get restless , until finally
he broke out with :
"That's all right , boys , but the
trouble with your snake stories is
that they are not "
"Well , suppose you tell us one that
is absolutely true , " suggested one of
the company.
"I will , " said the colonel prompt
ly.
And then "Dick" told how he had
found himself traveling one hot aft
ernoon along a cart road cut through
what seemed miles of chaparral ,
somewher6 in Texas , I believe. Sud
denly his pony stopped , and he was
nearly thrown over the animal's head.
"I got off , " Col. Wintersmith went
on to say , "and looked about to
see what the trouble was , and soon
found , about a rod ahead , a huge
rattle-snake asleep across the road
way , his head clown the slope on one
side and his tail in the gutter on the
other. I tried to make the poney
jump the snake but hewouldn't budge.
There wasn't a stone or • a stick big
enough to handle in sight , and I had
no fire-arms. I was in a pickle , but
I couldn't go back , and didn't like
to stay where I was. However ,
while considering the situation , I saw
away ahead on the further side of
the rattler a sapling such as is used
to bind hay upon a rick. Hitching
my pony to the brush I stepped back
so as to get a good start , took a
running jump , leaped over thesnake ,
ran to the sappling grabbed it with
both hands , ran , swinging it over
my head , back to his slumbering
snake-ship and whacked him right
across the head , breaking it at once
Here the colonel took a long
breath and something else besides.
The company looked disap
pointed.
"Is that all ? " some one asked.
The colonel cast a look of wither
ing contempt upon tlj ? youth ad
justed his cold rimmed spectacles ,
and then continued :
"Yes , breaking it at once. And
hang me , gentlemen you may be
lieve me or not if I didn't discover
that my sapling was the snake's
mate , and "
"Oh. colonel ! Come , now , tha'ts a
little too " came in chorus.
"And.that , " Yent on the colonel ,
not in the least disturbed , "nnd the
same blow had killed it alEO.
After that nothing remained forth ©

At last the police met him on tho street
and took him , unresisting , into custody.
Parliament was in session. A leading
member of tho house aroso on tho gov
ernment bench and said : "I have tho
pleasuro of informing tho house that
Parnell is now safo behind the bars in
"Kilmainham. "
Immediately tho entire liberal yarty ,
reinforced by most of tho tories pres
ent , rose wildly to their feet , cheered
until thoy were _ hoarse , and waved their
hats with frenzied satisfaction.
History has a marvelous way of undo
ing herself and begging providence to
forgive her imperfections. The other
day , says tho cable , when Parnell ap
peared in tho house of commons he
"was greeted with enthusiasticcheers ,
all tho members of tho opposition , in
cluding Gladstone , rising in their places
and waving their hats. "
Victoria' * Cluop MUIrt.
The following anecdoto is told to
illustrate tho readiness with which Par
isian fashions aro adopted , even by tho
most rigidly patriotic of princesses.
At tho epoch of the arrival of Queen
Victoria in Paruun 1850 , on a visit to tho
emperor and empress , the latter had
just brought hooped skirts into vogue.
The queen forthwith sent off a messen
ger to purchase one for her , and on tho
next approach before her imperial host
and hostess her skirts were expanded
into tho new and fashionable amplitude.
But her majesty had not comprehended
the necessary method of tying tho tapes
that held the hoops in place , and , contin
ues tho Philadphia Chronicle corres
pondent , her crinoline presented an ex
traordinary and shapeless aspect. Jt
was the emperor himself who , with his
own imperial hand , set the rebellious
peticoat to rights , and gave to his royal
guest a lesson as to tho proper method
of donning the new fashioned adjunct
of feminine costume.

How to CliooMe.
A clever woman was recently asked
who should be made president of a cer
tain association of which great things
were expected. "I can not name her , "
she said , "but choose someone with a
big nose and a big mouth. " There may
be no suggestion worth a row of pins in
this , but none the less it is true that
many of the ruling men and women of
power have large features. This is spe
cially so in the literary world. At a lit
erary gathering anywhere big noses or
big mouths , or both , will be noticeable.
The same traits are observable at a spir
itual seance. At the council of women
in Washington the noses of the women
were in the aggregate monumental. It
is the same at a meeting of Sorosis.
Miss Frances Willard has a big nose
and a good sized mouth. Mrs. Julia
Ward Howe has a big mouth , but very
fine and sympathetic. George Eliot's
nose lackeel nothing in size. It really
looks as if the big-nosed , wide-mouthed
people had the best of it in life , at least
from the public point of view.
Prozress of tho metric Syxtcm.
Statistics of M. Faye show that since
1877 the metric system has been adopted
completely by 53,000,000 people , has be
come optional with 19,000,000 , and has
been applied in the custom houses of
54,000,000. To-day the system is used
among 127,000,000 more of the world's
population , therefore , than in 1877 , or
among a total qf 794,000,000. Tho
French system of money is in actual usn
among 100,000,000 people , and is to
some extent the standard among 311-
000,000 , against 162,000,000 in 1877.
